Dera Sacha Sauda and Gurmeet Ram Rahim

Rate this book
A journalist's account of investigating Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his empire of exploitation

How did a nondescript young man from a farming family become the head of a quasi-religious sect with a million followers willing to die and kill for their 'Pitaji'?

The story of the rise of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan of the wildly popular Dera Sacha Sauda is anything but ordinary. It allegedly involved sexual exploitation, forced castrations, private militias, illegal trade in arms and opium, and land grab on an untold scale-until the self-styled godman was convicted for one of his many crimes in August 2017.
The book opens with an anonymous letter which led to the first-ever journalistic investigation, in 2007-Tehelka's Operation Jhootha Sauda-into the reported criminal activities at the Dera. In the years that followed, the author continued to document the lonely battles for justice against the influential godman who had the might of the Dera's machinery and manpower behind him.
This book is as much about the grit and determination of ordinary citizens fighting power systems as it is about the difficulty of investigating crimes committed by the rich and powerful in India today.

This is a book describing the rise and fall of Gurmeet Ram Rahim. These books can be only written by journalists who have been fearless while reporting against Dera Sacha Sauda. The details of investigation, interviews and other insights into the Dera have really exposed the cult and each of such exposures have been backed by facts.
Though, the timeline is haphazard but taking into account the efforts of all authorities and the quality of investigative journalism,I am rating the book as excellent.Every one who follows a Godman/cult should read this book.

I first heard about "Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insan Singh" sometime in 2015, when trailers for his first movie "MSG: The Messenger" found their way to every TV screen and social media network. At that time, he seemed no more than an oddity, an eyesore and a *highly* atypical 'hero' for any Hindi movie. For anyone who hasn't had the good fortune of seeing the trailer of this movie yet, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scuWi...

It was a couple of years after this that his name featured prominently in the media again, when he was convicted of rape after a special investigation by the CBI. His followers went on a rampage, leading to widespread violence in Haryana, Punjab and other places where Dera followers were present in significant numbers.
At this time, news articles were also peppered with sensational reports (read: masala) on Honeypreet Insan – the woman who claimed to be Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s “adopted daughter” (while allegations flew thick about their relationship being anything but that of a father and daughter). Honeypreet got almost as much coverage as Gurmeet’s crimes and the court verdict, since the media was all about eyeball-grabbing headlines (https://indianexpress.com/article/who...).

So, it seemed to most of the mainstream media consumers, that this was the extent of the Gurmeet story. I had not realized that there was so much more to his story than the tip of the iceberg, which made it to prime-time news.

This book does well in both priming and educating an uninitiated reader on Deras, and how this particular one came about. The authors have neatly divided it into 3 distinct portions for ease of mental mapping.
The first part traces the journalists’ own story and their investigation into the various allegations against Gurmeet (of which there are so many!). The amount of effort they have put into tracing people involved in the case and speaking to them is commendable; more so because at the time, they couldn’t have known whether all their effort would result in any news-worthy / monetizable outcome.
The second part gives the reader a good idea on how Gurmeet took over the Dera and rose to power the way he did. This helps piece together a lot of the ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ that enabled his ascent. This is also the portion of the book that applies in a more general sense – as a reader, you realize that there are certain common elements that play a role in many stories of one person consolidating his power for selfish motives.
The last part of the book traces the victims’ fight for justice and the investigation that finally culminated in Gurmeet’s arrest. It touches upon the immense pressure exerted by both Dera followers, as well as political parties in trying to bury the cases against Gurmeet.

What really stands out in this book is the exemplary courage shown by ordinary people who have been victims of Gurmeet’s violence: the rape survivors who testified in court at great risk to their personal safety, the family of Ram Chander Chhatrapati – the journalist who was murdered because he tried to expose the truth, the CBI officer who would not give in to political pressure, and many others.

Apart from all this though, my head is still reeling from the number and magnitude of crimes that have been committed by this person, who was so revered by his followers. These included the systematic rape of sadhvis in the Dera, chillingly calculated castrations of several boys and young men, land-grabbing and strong-arming land owners to give up lands to the Dera, and of course, murdering anyone who dared speak up against the Dera chief.
Particularly shocking was the creation of the ‘Qurbani Wing’, which is no different from a suicide squad, ready to die or kill for the Dera chief. And the fact that many of the recruits of this wing were men who had been systematically trained for this very purpose made it so scary. Prime candidates would be young boys - preferably orphans - picked up and trained in combat, who would later be castrated and brainwashed into believing that their only allegiance was to the Dera chief (ironically, it would be drilled into them that the outside world would shun them because they are now ‘eunuchs’ – which was a deliberately engineered move by the Dera).

It was shocking and saddening to see the number of lives ruined by the whims of one depraved man in his quest for power. But these stories also need to be told, and told fearlessly. Media and consequent public opinion hold the power to sway the outcome in so many cases where political parties have already been bought. And in that sense, it is heartening to see journalists investing their time in such a story without any guarantees of a quick “success” defined in the traditional sense.
I was happy to see that in January this year, the courts have held Gurmeet accountable for ordering the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. Hopefully, his other crimes will catch up to him as well.

As an aside: I was initially surprised nobody had tried making a movie out of this book yet. But then I remembered that the Dera followers have still not been disbanded, many of them still ‘true to their cause’ (including the suicide wing). So movie-makers would perhaps be wise to wait a while in their own interests.
Overall though, the book is well written and to the point, happily lacking in needless dramatization or descriptive novelization of real events. A recommended read to anyone who has heard of the Gurmeet case and would like to know more.

Dera Sacha sauda and gurmeet ram rahim - Anurag Tripathi

If this effing moron could dupe tens of millions of people in believing that he is indeed God, literally, and drive their faith to such an extent that they are ready to sacrifice their wealth, dignity and life for him, then I believe all these followers of his not only deserve to be fooled, but also are somehow party to all his crimes and misdemeanors. Cause I have always maintained, I have got no problem with God, it is the fan club that I can't stand.
Am I surprised that this guy turned out to be a rapist and murderer? NO.
Am I surprised that he enjoys the patronage of the wealthy and the powerful of our society? NO.
Am I surprised that his supporters resorted to violence and vandalism resulting in 36 dead when he was convicted to 20 years of incarceration? NO.
The only thing I was really interested in knowing where did his supporters dump their remaining common sense, when this guy created the most ridiculous movies that the earth has ever seen. Sadly, there was no mention of that in this book.
Even if I have no doubt the intrepid author has provided snippets of exemplary investigative journalism, however this one turned out to be a shoddily written book with no additional insights to the conman's rise to power that's not already available on newspaper articles. This book was more about the investigation than Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan and his Dera. Probably hurriedly published to cash in while the public memory is still fresh after the conviction of MSG.
Disappointing.

Investigative reporting is hard, especially when you are dealing with characters who hold such sway over all levers of administration. It is incredible what has been achieved and this book is an exposition of grit, in the face of such terrific odds. It's insane to understand how such people could control so many people, just amazing.
The writing is fast paced, the content melancholic at times but the stories of the individuals who stood up to this monster deserve this nations gratitude. Wonderful and must read.

Nice little documentary of the tehelka led investigation of the notorious godman ram rahim (or gurmeet).
I just wished it was a little more detailed, especially of the visit to the Den of the DSS.
I am sure that the investigators would have entered the DSS with hidden camera etc., wish that experience had also been shared. Initially they do enter the DSS but without wiring up and manage to sit in some waiting room but don't succeed in meeting Gurmeet.
The life of Poora Sach's founder Chathrapathi & continued fight by his son both with the running of the evening paper and also his follow ups with the law for getting justice for his father's death are neatly written.
Although our country is slow with providing justice to the deserving, but there are still some government organizations which ensure that not everything is bad, one such example is CBI, who spend nearly 6 years investigating the case on the DSS and file the chargesheet in 2007.
It is also rather sad to see that very few have volunteered to support the investigation to become the witness, due to which the final verdict was not so great, that Gurmeet was charged only for 2 rapes & given 20 years in jail is unacceptable.
I hope other cases are also closed in future and Gurmeet ends up with life sentence.
DSS had so much political control during its time that not much of its activities or the cases against them are found in the internet (I tried searching in Youtube, but found very few videos of his cases, but found lots of videos about his MSG movie promotions).

Overall a great book which brings to light the actual happenings behind the closed doors of DSS till 2017.

Dera Sacha Sauda is an interesting book. In India, since 2007, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has existed at the edges of mainstream knowledge, especially after the dust-up with the Sikh community. In my own understanding, he was a ridiculous character (even for a cult leader) and reading this book opened my eyes to so many uncomfortable truths around the Dera. After the extremely popular 'Wild, Wild Country' (about the Rajneeshis and Osho's attempt to take over a small town in America), there are so many patterns that are observable in movements such as these. Gurmeet Ram Rahim is almost a comical representation of a 'typical' cult leader- from the egostitical self-importance, to the disturbing sexual abuse and control of followers. This book, while not the best-written, is an important read, something to learn from, and notice in India- where Godmen and Saints are a dime a dozen.

I always wondered how can one conman after another and yet our people continue to be fooled. These Godmen command fan following to such an extent that their followers are ready to sacrifice their wealth, health, family, future and possibly themself at the drop of a hat. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, his personality is as odd as his name, and his crimes even worse. He has raped sadhvis in his ashram, castrated hundreds of young boys and men, killed the insiders and grabbed land worth thousands of crores. The book describes the investigation done by two fearless journalists amidst adversity and danger to their lives. The conman exploited common men in cahoots with the media and politicians (belonging to ruling and opposition parties).

The purpose of this book was to understand

Although the narrative gets messy at times, the shocking content keeps one gripped. As other reviewers say, the bravery of the survivors and journalists involved is commendable. The book manages to paint an effective picture of the herculean task they faced in getting the monstrous baba to jail. Would definitely recommend if you are somewhat familiar with the incredulous case.

The self-styled fake Godman : Gurmeet The Monster
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Where can we go to find God if we cannot see Him in our own hearts and in every living being.

- Swami Vivekananda

Dera Sacha Sauda and Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a decade long investigation, is a stellar piece of investigative journalism by the author, and in this book he unravelled some of the bad deeds of the so-called self-styled fake God Man, Gurmeet the rapist.

The word 'Dera', literally means encampment, and the sect "Dera saccha sauda" (The camp of those who have made a deal with the truth) was established in 1948 by an ascetic Mastana Balochistani, in the town of Sirsa, Haryana.

As people of any caste, creed, religion and age can join this sect, and the thing which makes this sect unique is that it preaches, Equality, and that's why people of the dalit community became the staunch followers of the dera, especially in the Punjab, haryana, Rajasthan and some areas of North India.

In the year 1963 Shah Mastana was appointed as the spiritual head of the dera by its founder, Balochistani. And both Balochistani and Mastana worked towards the betterment of their followers, but things changed suddenly when Mastana announced the name of Gurmeet Singh, as the new head of the Dera in 1990.

And from 1990 till his imprisonment in August 2017, Gurmeet exploited his position as well as the faith of his innocent followers who believed that he was an incarnation of God. But this monster raped his own female disciples, castrated young men, killed innocent people, grabbed properties, created his own qurbani dasta or suicide squad and other kinds of immoral activities.

He created a fake aura around him for decades, and from cabinet Ministers to Member of Parliament, all bow down in front of him, just because of the vote-bank politics, and that's why this monster survived for so many decades. But finally in the year 2017 he was convicted in two rape cases and was sentenced to 20-years of rigorous imprisonment by a CBI-court.

The author has really done a brilliantly job by exposing this monster and rapist, and the language of the book is very easy to be read and I strongly recommends to readers that you can surely go for this Book.

Overview

Divided in 3 parts the book walks through the rise and fall of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. First part of the book narrates the story of sting operation on Dera saccha suada by Anurag Tripathi and his team member, this operation was named as ‘Operation Jhootha Sauda’. Both the journalists were associated with ‘Tehalka’ known for its investigative journalism.

Second Part inform us the backstory of Dera Saccha Suada, the birth and the early two chiefs of Dera and the story of grabbing the position of Dera Chief by Gurmeet forcibly. It also narrates the horrors inside the dera, an important interview with the ‘ex-husband’ and father-in-law of infamous Honeypreet.

Third part focused on the death of Ram Chandra Chattrapati, a journalist who fought against the Dera chief, the conditions and reasons in which he died and the long and tiresome battle of justice by his son Anshul Chattrapati. This part also recounts the violence which was spreaded by dera followers on the roads of Punjab and Harayana during the arrest of Gurmeet Ram Raheem. And the book finally ends with the verdict of Gurmeet’s case.

Conclusion
A true page turner and gripping, the book disclose the horror and type of sins Gurmeet Singh use to commit in his ashram. From sexual assault to castration & killing of civilians, gurmeet singh used all his political power and manpower to get away from his crimes, however thanks to the lonely battles by the few brave ones he was convicted in cases above and was finally put behind the bars.

Ram rahim - Qaidi number 1997 ,Rohtak Jail.
A rapist, a murderer and also a traitor
He not only raped hundreds of women’s believing he is their god and has complete power over their soul and their body but coaxed them into believing that by raping them he is making them pure and is removing any impurity which would have settled over them in the outside world. He threatened to kill the family members of these Sadhvis if they ever spoke about what he does to them.
He killed men’s whom he found conspiring against him. He subjected young men to castration. His dera had a “sacrifice wing” which contained within it the horror you cannot even imagine. He not only dealt in arms and ammunition but also wanted to create his own fort and an army and also his own currency.

What gave him so much power you ask?
Well we gave him the power, our superstition, our political parties, some of our media houses and our corrupt system.
It’s a must read because staying aloof to the hineous crimes these people commit in the name of divine power is not a solution.

Wow, truth here is stranger than fiction. Its so scary and difficult to imagine trauma people would have gone through in rape and castration in Dera. Its unbelievable that a madman commits such sins with support from political class and society in general. But at the same time it gives hope that if brave people like rape victims in this case can stand up against the mighty, at the end of the day there will be justice. It also shows that honest people are the sole of any institution, in this case the court, CBI and media where some people stood by what is right and brought down Dera chief.

It’s an extremely well written book by author Anurag Tripathi. His honesty, journalistic values and writing style are commendable. After reading this book, I have become a big fan of his writing. I highly recommend this book.

Surprised and shocked. Death sentence exists for people like Ram Rahim.
How can so many people rally behind him even now.
How was this possible in a democratic country like India where law is paramount and every society's first belief is Justice? This book left me with too many questions.

Why did Crores of people rally against a person who calls himself god but makes music videos, why didn't anyone question his expanding wealth . It took nearly 10 years for the cases to end. And what about the crores of women who are silently suffering, and men who have scars both mentally and physically. Will they ever receive compensation? .

Can a religious leader be so powerful? And the political leaders who closed their ears and eyes when all of this was happening, can they ever be punished. This book will come as a surprise to an idealistic Indian.

Please get yourselves a job that can help you earn enough money for sustainability. Educate yourself and your next generation, to such levels that you NEVER have to fall in these traps laid by self proclaimed, self styled GOD MEN/WOMEN.

The writing and the investigation carried out is absolutely brilliant and crisp. Please read!

The truth will come out sooner or later

It was a very informative and insightful read. There is no words when i read about the victims insights. The men and women whom this devil has exploited for his own sake is very hard to believe. They are scarred forever. I believe there will be Karma delivered when the time comes. I have immense respect for those who risked their lives and families safety for the truth. Nobody cared about the allegations. It took more than ten years to simply acknowledge the case for the authority. Its shivering to think in this span of time how many people got exploited or murdered. If the steps were taken earlier.... more people could be saved.

The best part about this book is that it is fast paced and gives an unbiased account. The language, although not great literarily, comes up as honest.

But the last chapters looks rushed. Would have also preferred to read more about Honeypreet and how she was finally apprehended.

A little investigation into the actualrelationship between the godman and honeypreet would have been good. Also next edition could also include his motivations to enter films and how bogus the films were and how much money did they actually make.

Extremely interesting to read

On one point you say rajasthani helped gurmeet to take over, while on the contrary you said Gupta didnot confirm it. So dont include whatbyou dont know in a factual book. But i must say the book never make you lose interest, you will be glued to it once you start reading it.

A good journalistic account of the blind follower sect of Dera Sacha Sauda. I gave lesser stars due to lack of coherent flow and the account seems to be very haphazardly put together. It would have been great if Shah Satnam and his sect followership can also be explained because lot of blind followership seems to come from that era. But, a decent one time read

Hastily written book with lucidity. Finished in 04 hrs, I enjoyed the unravelling of the sinister evolution of MSG. Many unanswered questions remain about him which have not been described in detail. Read this book if you want to learn facts about the conviction of MSG.

Nothing that one wouldn't have read in the newspapers

The book is largely a mere factual account of the Dera chief's depravity, which has already been published by newspapers. No special insights are to be gained from the book.
