When the prospecting starship, Galathea, crash-landed on a remote planet, the crew thought that help would arrive soon. They were wrong.

The first officer's in the brig, and a series of deaths have left CSO Jas Harrington where she least expected to be—in command. That's fine. Ordering people around is her second-best talent.

But she knows krat-all about damaged starship engines. Unless she can whip the third-class engineer into shape, the ship's going nowhere. And the ship needs it to go somewhere, fast because alien predators are trying to break in.

When the aliens make their move, only a miracle can prevent Jas and the crew of the Galathea from being stranded forever.

J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Author J.J. Green brings us Jas's next adventure picking up where Generation left off. The Galathea has crashed on the planet that they where surveying and Jas along with the pilot are in command. But things spiral out of control fast as a second insurrection takes place because of a vile of drugs that where brought on board by the ships captain. And to make matters worse the ship is sinking. Jas goes out to find the aliens that had taken over the command crew of the ship only to find another ship that had been berried long ago. While she is doing that the insurrection frees the confined and untrustworthy first officer. This is a great book and one to to be missed by science fiction fans. I highly recommend it and the rest of the series too. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

This book follows the misfortunes of Jas, Carl, Lee, the crew of the Galathea and of course Flux, Carl’s strange alien bat like creature, after they crash landed on what, at first, appears to be a planet devoid of life.

First things first someone needs to take charge of the situation. Jas steps up to the mark but what will her priorities be?

How many of the crew have been infected and is Haggardy one of them?

Will the crew follow her or rebel?

With Lee in stasis they are a team member short. Trainee engineer Toirien MacAdam comes forward to fill the breach.

Will they manage to lift off from the planets surface?

This is a well written space adventure that I recommend you read for yourself.

In this second of the Shadows of the Void series, Jas Harrington and the crew of the Galathea are stranded on the planet where hostile aliens had infected all the officers and tried to take over the ship. Jas and the crew have managed to defeat them but then crash landed on the planet and they’re not sure if they’ll be able to leave. As members of the crew cause trouble, Jas and a few of her trusted crewmates work to find a solution to their problems. This was a quick read with plenty of action and suspense as they figure out what to do. On to the next episode where the story continues after a great conclusion to their predicament on the hostile planet.

The title of this book, Stranded, proved quite true for the people on the Galathea more than one reason.
When hope of rescue fades, it is then that the list for power for some people becomes overwhelming and mutiny becomes reality.
For others it becomes a time to just give up.
But in all the commotion it is still Jas Harrington that seems to hold everything together.
And some interesting things start to happen too, which is what made this reader continue paging this book
Enjoy

3.5 stars rounded down to 3 for GR

I'm realizing that this series solves problems in ways that feel too easy, too obvious, disappointing or even plainly against my expectations of the characters. But this type of book doesn't need to be too challenging in that regard - I'm only here for a fun time, and this series delivers. I highly recommend picking it up in the 10-part collection if possible. The books feel short and the endings clipped off if you can't immediately pick up the next one.

Good book!

I'm really enjoying this series but chapter books aren't my thing. Reading a story for 90 minutes and then doing something else is my norm but the books don't last that long for me. I love that officer Lee is critical in the ship's escape from dangerous circumstances so I'll probably keep reading the series.

The ship crashed (hard landing) and none of the electronics are working.

Jas and Lingiari put Lee into stasis (using the robots for power) until they can work out how to revive her ... but there’s still a way to access her thoughts (love that) and communicate with her. The crew are all struggling to survive but then life becomes more complicated.

I think the resolution to this one was a bit too pat. I'm looking askance at the portrayal of the one Irish member of the crew- it might be pandering to stereotypes too much. But the series continues to be engaging, otherwise. I think it's too early to tell if some of the plot in this one is going to pay off later or turn into a question of "what was the point in that?"

The second book in this series sees the crew stranded on the planet with, seemingly, no way off.
Division amongst the crew, strange alien lifeforms and the possibility of death at every corner make for a heart pumping read.

A decent follow on from the opener. I liked the addition of some suspicion of the First Mate; add to the intrigue I think. I'm going to have to try to stay with the series so I've already started #3 - "Dawn."

Watch this space (pun intended).

Increasing complexity

After aliens imitated the captain he forced others to also be introduced to the malevolent species. The story crash lands to take out most of the infected, but the planet has other plans.

The second in a three volume set part of a longer series this is a continuation of the story. Jas Harrington along with the pilot and navigator saved the ship from being taken over by the aliens but the navigator was 'fatally' injured. Harrington finds an alien vessel but the crew mutinied.

An interesting ‘instalment’ – you’ll need to read them all

Stranded is the second book in The Shadows of the Void series and follows on directly from Generation. It’s like Generation was last week’s episode and now it’s time to tune in again for the next one. In this way, it reads more as an instalment than a separate book. Possibly it could be enjoyed stand-alone but I think you really need to have read book one (and intend to read book three etc.)

The main characters continue to be developed and they’re definitely 3-dimensional. Interestingly, I found elements of their personalities less attractive than previously. This is great because, of course, nobody is perfect and all real people have elements that are not perfect.

From the title, Stranded, you can kinda guess the storyline (if you’ve read the first book it’s even easier!) The Galathea has crash landed on the scary K.67092d planet with the mysterious aliens who have replaced most of Galathea’s officers.

Several new characters are introduced and some of the darker side of being confined to a spacecraft for months/years on end are presented. The drug ‘myth’ and abuse of alcohol show another aspect of the story and some great realism.

Sadly, there were a couple of points that were a little lacking. For example, why was Toirien’s run on myth shorter than it should have been? Maybe this will be explained later in the series but it did seem to be left somewhat abruptly. There was also a bit of a disappointment in the ‘ending’. It was all a bit too sudden. You can spend 92% of the book feeling more and more hopeless about being stranded on the planet, and then BANG, everything changes in the last few pages based on a very simplistic idea.

All told, this is a good ‘instalment’ of the story. It does make you want to read the next book in the series to find out what happens to the characters you’ve grown attached to. There are some good relationship issues to get stuck into as well as the underlying ‘alien’ story. I found it a quick and easy read and look forward to finding out what happens next.
