I read this one in Dutch but will be writing a review in English.

So, as I said yesterday in my review for the first book, I am giving this series one more chance. Well, that chance is now over. Sorry, but I am not continuing with this series. It has potential, but only if you remove the magical abilities of Agatha and if you remove Larry completely.

In this book we find out that not only does Agatha have a magical memory (really, can you stop saying it to us?), but also a magical reading speed. *sighs*Sorry, but it is just getting annoying. I would rather have a heroine who needs to work a bit for her success.

And then there is Larry. Larry who once again just drags his niece with him to a mission, and once again doesn't do a poop thing to help her. Instead he makes one stupid remark after remark and he just keeps showing that he doesn't learn anything basic at that school of his. Bollywood? What is that? Other normal stuff people of his age would know... nope. Nothing.
Again he relies on his niece and her butler to help solve the mystery. Again his niece solves the mystery. And again...

Also, just like the first book, this didn't feel like a second book. It felt like a book much further in the series, especially since they said that Agatha helped Larry with many missions.

I am also a bit worried that apparently Agatha doesn't tell her parents she is just hopping around the world. :(

The book also had some good points, that is the reason I rated it a 2 stars.

For instance, the mystery was really fun. Not only to solve it, but also the way the mystery was written was engaging and fun. You really want to help Agatha solve the mystery. And every time you think that you may have solved it, BANG, a new twist will tell you it may not be so simple as you thought it would be.

Also the fact this story takes place in India and we read about the culture/cities/religion.

I also liked Agatha's uncle. He was such a big happy guy. Though he may need to up his tact a bit, at times he was a bit too pushy. But I liked how he tried to connect to Mr. Kent.

Plus I liked how this book seemed to have been set in the past, but then there are things as cellphones, computers, wifi. It all just connected perfectly. It is not often that this works, but in this one it does.

Also I am still loving the illustrations. They make the story more fun, and make the characters a tiny bit more tolerable.

But yes, I am not going to read this series further, which is such a shame I was really looking forward to having a new series to enjoy.

The author's ridiculously Anglophonic name is a pseudonym; it’s originally in Italian. This is the second in a series; I didn’t read the first. This was chosen as a class read-aloud for our mystery unit. The conceit of this series is that young Agatha a super-genius who has total recall and speed-reading skills, and she travels to various locations with her inept aspiring detective cousin Dash and her bodyguard to solve mysteries. In this outing, they venture to India to meet Agatha’s uncle Raymond, a wildlife photographer, and to crack the case of a priceless pearl that has disappeared from the temple of Kali.

It’s an over the top mix of comedy and adventure, though some of the comedy may be lost in translation; it’s all a bit cartoony and European. Dash is rather an annoying character, being in over his head and pretty much useless. Added to that, even though this is only the second book, Stevenson takes the super-advanced tech as a given in order to show Dash’s incompetence with it, which falls flat since we don’t really understand how it is supposed to work. On the plus side, the mystery is surprisingly complex, with fair clues and at a couple of genuinely unexpected plot twists. The other characters, like the uncle and bodyguard, are quite entertaining. And young readers can learn a good deal about Indian culture and religions, which is far from the norm in kid lit for this age. This would be a great series for kids who are armchair globetrotters. The next series for Geronimo Stilton graduates, maybe.

Review for "The Pearl of Bengal" by Sir Steve Stevenson:

It's the second book from the "Agatha: Girl of Mystery" series written by the Italian author, Sir Steve Stevenson. The story focuses on Agatha and her team who have to solve another mystery. This time Agatha has to help her uncle Raymond to find an ancient artifact which was stolen from the temple of the Hindu goddess Kali.
The destination in this story is Bengal, India. Action, friendship, teamwork, shake charmers, beautiful Indian architecture, bravery and much more can be found at every page one reads.
Mr. Stevenson can be considered the founder of detective and murder mystery novels for children through his simple style which is easy to understand. While reading each of the five volumes, the reader will also find the style of Agatha Christie (creator of the famous detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple) mixed with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the Sherlock Holmes series), spy movies and Indiana Jones from which a masterpiece was born. Not only that his novels made us readers get out of touch of reality for a little, but they invite us to take a journey around the world too.
Adventure, trips, mysteries, bravery, cleverness and intelligence, humor are only some of the things that you’ll discover in the Agatha: Girl of Mystery series. I recommend these books not only to young readers, but to adults as well.
