Witch's Dawn

Rate this book
One day, I’m nobody. The next, I’m a witch. And I’ve caught the attention of three smoking hot demons.

I left home to start over, to escape a world I never fit in. I soon learned that my past was a lie. My parents suppressed my magical abilities and tried to make me forget my true nature. They almost succeeded.

Now my real grandmother is back in my life and teaching me the craft of our people. After living my whole life without magic, I feel like a blind woman seeing for the first time.

But three devilishly handsome men are saying there’s more to my story. I see them everywhere, even in my dreams which are starting to feel like distant memories.

They say I’m not an ordinary witch. My grandmother says not to trust them. Who do I believe?

That was interesting. I've gone back and forth a bit, though I will say I haven't read anything like it before. It was unique.

What I am struggling with most is deciding whether my slight discomfort with it is because it flies in the face of comfortable societal norms. I am not remotely religious, though I wouldn't consider myself an atheist. Let's call me agnostic. So I don't take offense at the blasphemous nature of the story at all. But perhaps the pervasive nature of those beliefs in our culture made me a little on edge while reading this?

Or maybe it is just that I am not sure whether the love interests are truly wicked, or are just misunderstood. That has yet to be resolved; it is, in fact, the central conflict in this first book.

Deja - a witch who has been reincarnated many times but has no knowledge of that fact, nor even knowledge that she is a witch - is the former lover of three demons. They call themselves her Unholy Trinity. Ash (Ashtaroth) is one of the original three fallen angels (along with Lucifer and Beelzebub), and one of the first hierarchy of Hell. Two of his disciples, Raum and Sal (Salmac), form the other two angles of the Trinity. (Raum happens to also be who the Norse once worshiped as Odin.)

This first book sets up the mystery and covers Deja first learning about being a witch and her witch powers, and also that her aura is mixed with the dark, which may have come from a demon who murdered her mother. The guys are watching and following her, waiting for her to remember the truth of who she is, and frustrated as she struggles both with her strict Christian upbringing (that suppressed her witchcraft) and with the beliefs of the witch community about demons.

All in all, it was interesting, and I will definitely be looking for the second book that releases in May. I am curious to see where this is going. But I am unsure how I feel about both it and the harem. It will all depend on how the story progresses.

Intriguing though! And fairly well written. Nice, clean read.

UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
76.0% "LMAO that was one of the funniest lines I've read in a while.
I nearly melted into a hot puddle of fuck-me goo right then.
74.0% "Like anyone would know what that is. How could you possibly tell a heart is beating in reverse?? What does that even mean?"

56.0% "LOL another great line:
"Hostess cupcakes taste like ox shit dipped in sugar and stuffed with bat semen!"
51.0% "Really not sure how I am feeling about this one. It feels a little rushed (though it is short, so maybe that's it). And I just can't connect to the characters. Something about the demon love interests is just...meh. LOL and it is certainly blasphemous!"

And *singing* I don't wanna start any blasphemous rumours but I think that God's got a sick sense of humour and when I die I expect to find Him laughing...

I'm sorry but this book was getting on my nerves.
I'm not Christian but the anti religion massage it implies is really disturbing and made me really uncomfortable.
the only reason I got this far in the book was the plot but unfortunately it didn't compensate for my discomfort.
I can understand that religious communities might drive a person into hating their belief but she's thirty; doesn't she have enough awareness to see that people tend to use religion to serve their own cause?
if she wants to blame someone for her "oppressive upbringing" she should blame her parents and the society and not religion itself. cuz religion is just a way to guide.
if the author wants to claim that her upbringing affected her in such a negative way then I would like to see more justifications or situation; I want to understand where that came from; not only by saying she was brought up in a Christian society. give me something to work with for me to understand her mind set and how it shaped her character.

I don’t consider myself an overly religious person and I’m def not a prude by any means. I can also suspend a lot of belief when reading - supernatural/paranormal is my fave genre. I’ve also read many books which involve angels, demons, and OTT religious cults. That being said, the anti-religious feeling this book conveys made me sick.
The heroine considers herself a “recovering” Christian. Now, I can understand the need for freedom from a repressive home (which she grew up in) but her level of bitterness and hate toward the Christian religion is disturbing. Many many detrimental references are made to “Judeo Christians” and it’s inferred that worshiping the Devil is the way to go.
I’m disappointed because the idea behind the book is intriguing and it could have been great if the author didn’t feel the need to bash Christians in order to write it.

Incredible

Amazing PNR RH novel!! We get to meet Deja as she learns she is a witch with some really awesome powers. She has a secret too only it's one she herself doesn't know either yet three hot demons do. Following it all play out as she stumbled along had me enraptured so much that I had no clue the end was coming. The cliff hanger just as it was getting incredible made me whimper. If you like the genre then you so have to read this book. Obviously I loved it so it gets 5/5 stars.

As it is just a short novella, not much happens, but it seems like a good start to the series.
It spans over the course of a few days, when Deja finds out at 28, that she’s a witch. But that’s not all, because three demons have been waiting a very long time for her rebirth.

As with any book involving the topic of Christianity, some might find it offensive, so make sure to check warnings.

Thirty year old Deja is proud of her accomplishments. Making it on her own running a business, moving away from her religious parents, working side by side with her BFF, Deja is happy with her life so far.

It's only after she participates in a tarot reading that she's told her whole life so far has been a lie.

Deja now knows what Harry Potter felt like when Hagrid said "Harry, you're a wizard."

* * *

Beginning of a serial series. Paranormal reverse harem romance featuring witches and demons.

While interesting and promising, this 'book' was little more than an extended prologue for a full length novel sort of thing.

Breaking down the cost factor on Amazon:
This 132 page book was $0.99 and ended on a cliffhanger
Book 2: Witch's Rite: A Reverse Harem Urban Fantasy is 154 pages with cost of $2.99
Book 3: Witch's Betrayal is 192 pages with cost of $2.99
Book 4: Witch's Exile: A Reverse Harem Urban Fantasy is 139 pages at $2.99
Book 5: Witch's Rebirth is 154 pages at $2.99
which apparently is the conclusion to the serial series.

In the end it's up to any potential reader to assess cost/reading experience to determine if they want to read the full story.

This one was....ok.

I think the premise had potential. I liked the idea of a newly discovered witch, and even the past lives thing was an interacting twist, but the weird anti-Christian vibe was off-putting for me. The main character describes herself as a “recovering Christian”, and all the characters make it a point to say that they are against Judeo-Christian beliefs. It’s a weird, unnatural addition that took away from the storyline and made it feel like propaganda.

Deja is just going through the motions of life when everything turns upside down. At almost 30 the last thing she expects is to learn she’s a witch and has magical powers. However one party later and her life is blowing up before her eyes, but not necessarily in a bad way. Three demonic men come into her life with a history she still has yet to learn about. She’s a pretty awesome MC with a shop of her own and having escaped and overcome an extremely religious home life. This first book was over in a flash and thankfully doesn’t really end on any cliffhanger. Only a perplexed Deja who in such short time has gained an in sane amount of power she has yet to learn about.

Picture it, Sicily... no, wait

The first woman was not content it be owned. She refused to submit. She knew she was equal in all ways. She didn't know that angels were watching her, and had similar ideas. Not content to allow the disparity between humans and angels, or men and women, they rebelled. They fell. And they took her with them.

Spoilers ahead.
I read this years ago and found a book with a similar theme recently. I wanted to reread this series to compare. I remember enjoying this series a lot. A woman who owned her s*xuality. Who was born powerful. Who loved more than one man but always those men throughout her many lives. Who encouraged education and equality. This may be a PNR-RH but it had some great themes underlying the steam.

YA feel with h with a very off putting name. Every time I read it, I added vu. Common trope, the h is adopted, Christian cult parents who didn't accept her, she's now 30 living a good if simple life. She finds out she's a witch, her real grandmother helps her to unlock her powers and 3 guys are her future mates. The guys are demons and grandma's views are clear about demons. In spite of an older h, the story line felt rather teenage witch. Just no grab as it was pretty hum drum.

Just what I was looking for

This was just the quick, quirky paranormal read I was after. Deja is coping (suspiciously well) with a few new truths and revelations about her family. The 3 gorgeous guys she meets have secrets and I found the way they both enticed Deja, but restrained themselves in other areas quite fascinating. I’m hooked on Deja discovering the truth and can’t wait yo see what happens.

I'm excited to see what will happen next between Deja, Ash, Sal & Raum. And I have a feeling Diana has a bigger role/history with the 3 demons 🤔

I love the idea of this story. It’s truly interesting and unique, but I personally struggled with some of the background implications the author threw in there. I am religious, a Christian, and whereas I used to be blindly bitter towards other Christians, because I could only see the hypocrisy some of them showed the world, I can see from both sides of the glass now. There will always be bad apples and good apples who claim to follow any religion or belief, but the author just slammed Christians left and right in this book, unfairly. It was disappointing and I think it takes away from the overall story. I would like to see the main character understand other Christians if not reconnect with them, but from the way the author writes her complete distaste, I sense it’s far from happening.
It is still yet to be seen whether the three “sexy as sin” demons are truly evil or just misunderstood. It’s difficult for me to get behind loving a truly evil character, so I’m interested to see if there are any character developments in the second book.
The MC is a kickass female and I do love that. She adapted to her new witch powers with such ease it made me cheer her on! However, if her powers were truly bound, how did she access them so easily, or was it just that her parents didn’t tell her about them, but they were always there? The author did not clarify.
Overall, I can’t wait to read the second book and see what trouble the MC can get into. I hope the author can shed some light on the things left unsaid.

Short but sweet

This book was pretty short. More like a novella than a book. I'm not complaining since it is KU and that's how I am reading it, but if I was buying it, I wouldn't be a happy camper. Not anything much happened and nothing wrapped up a like a normal book, even one in a series. This really is just a serial and not separate books in a series. Secondly, this book will turn off true believer Christians. It takes a whole other outlook on God, Lucifer, angels falling and demons. It actually makes a lot of sense and was an interesting take. I was worried at first that it was going to be glamourizing devil worship, but despite how it looks, that's not where it goes so if you are okay with seeing a different side to what might have happened if the bible were based on fact, then I think you will find this book interesting. For the author, I would highly suggest putting this completed series into a box set to prevent upsetting paying readers.

SPOILERS!

Books that have a prologue that give away a noteworthy event that’s going to occur later in the book are crazy annoying in my opinion. Kills the mystery and surprise just a little bit.

Besides that, once I got past the prologue I was thrown off by the all of a sudden make out session with two of the guys, Sal and Ram. I felt as if I was missing part of the book or had missed something in the first book. I actually went back and forth trying to figure it when Deja had moved to this level with the guys. Well, I didn’t find it. It was just BAM! All of a sudden. It was in a really abrupt manner, with none of the usual development I look forward to in a book.

For me personally, this book wasn’t that well done and I couldn’t bring myself to continue it. It just didn’t flow well.

Witch’s Dawn is a well written paranormal story about a witch who is just discovering who she really is, and the three demons who have loved her for over a thousand years. Ash has created a story that flows beautifully and which draws you in. The characters have depth and are likeable and the world building is detailed but not cumbersome.

Our heroine, Deja, is both likeable and relatable as the tea shop owner who only recently broke away from her cultish upbringing and is now discovering that she is a witch. We get some backstory on Deja throughout the book, both from her point of view and the three sexy as sin demons, and it is pretty obvious that her childhood, while not terrible, was not the happiest of places. Deja’s best friend and employee, Nona, is fun and steady as a rock and is a great counterpart to Deja’s uncertainty and cynicism. The three demon men are well portrayed as the ever patient lost lovers of Deja, and minions of Lucifer. I like multiple POV’s but sometimes I find the men’s POV’s weak and too alpha male. This is not the case in Witch’s Dawn; their POV only adds to the story and helps explain certain things. Deja finding out about her magic is a big part of the book, but Ash weaves it all in with the storyline so naturally that it is integral to the book - I really enjoyed the use of auras and energy.

I am no Christian myself, I actually do not prescribe to any religion, so I did not find the anti-Christian feel of the book to be an issue. However, if you are a follower of the faith and are easily offended; this may not be the best book for you. I really enjoyed Ash’s spin on Hell and Lucifer and the other demons. Also, the rift between witch’s and demons had an underlying racial facet that reflects many cultural problems today.

Witch’s Dawn is a reverse harem so we do see some hot scenes but nothing too steamy in this first instalment - think tension and buildup over erotica. I enjoy the chase and a bit more of a slow burn novel so this one felt spot on for me. My only complaint would be that it is too short, barely taking two hours to read I am now finding myself impatient for the next book but I would highly recommend reading Witch’s Dawn.

I was intrigued by the prequel story, Her 3 Demons, and was eagerly looking forward to this first book in the series. I wasn't disappointed. A woman discovers she's a witch but doesn't realise how much more there is to her. Fortunately, three demons are eager to help her discover the truth and this is the start of their story. You can't beat a great demon or three in a book and Ash, Sal and Raum fit the bill nicely. Crystal has given them very distinct personalities and I have to admit that my favourite is Ash but they are all great characters. Deja has a whole history that she knows nothing of and as she learns more from her grandmother and her Unholy Trinity, she will inevitably change and become who she really is. This is beginning already as she starts to exercise her witchy powers but she is also finding hidden depths in herself with her response to the demons.
Crystal has woven a good tale and Deja's path to finding her true self pulled me in and I can't wait to see what comes next.

HOLY FREAKING HELL!!!
Man, what a ride. Talk about a walk on the wild side. Whew! I'll get this out eventually. Maybe! If you're looking for wicked witches, sexy demons, lots of magic and swirling emotions that will definitely rock your world, congratulations, you've found it. I'm not sure how much is speculation, research or just imagination but Crystal has created a vividly detailed world where wicked seem to be good for more than just going to hell. The characters chemistry sizzles from the pages and seem to suck you in the vortex until you feel the wind, the heat and lightening. The way she has the scenes playing out are so realistic you get so caught up in it, that you feel your along for the ride. You're torn between two different beliefs as the main character tries to come to terms with herself and the powers she comes into. On a path of self discovery I'm not sure she's ready for. Crap! Now I can't wait for the next book. Phenomenal job Crystal bringing this bad boy to life. Thanks for sharing with us.

Had to stop reading

The book started okay and was fairly interesting. Woman raised by strict "Christian" parents then discovering she's a witch and apparently with a harem from hell. But I had to pause when she described herself as a "recovering Christian" and then had to stop when she said it followed a God who wanted to "enslave" women. It was clear the author is anti Christianity. I saw other reviews say the same but I thought they were over reacting. I've read other books when it was not a fan of organised Christian religion and I'm ok with it. But this was different. I think the author could have described her background as being raised by those who perverted the Christian faith or were zealots or something. Then the reader could get the same idea of her background without defamation of Christianity as a whole. There are many different denominations within Christianity and all vary some on what's required and what God is like, but to paint it ask the such a divisive perverted brush is unnecessary.

Did not finish

Got 65% through the book and decided to move on. The book moved too slow. There didn’t seem to be a plot. The heroine found out she was a witch and the three “hot” guys she met were demons. I’m not even sure what made them hot. They wore clothes and had eyes and hair.

Every thing I learned about the heroine was superficial. She owned a tea shop in San Francisco, I have no idea how she got the money to open it. She arrived in San Francisco with just a backpack. May I would have learned later, at 65%, I was tired of dragging through the pages.

I’m not even sure what the point of the prologue was. It wasn’t exciting and didn’t draw me in. It seemed like the author assumed every book came with one, so she threw one in too. Really it felt like she just pulled a random scene from the middle of the book and put it in the front. When I finally got to the scene, nothing special happened.

After falling asleep too many times and procrastinating to pick this up again, I’m throwing in the towel. With the progress I’ve made, I’d give this 1.5-2 stars.

My review is 3.6 stars.

This book is a supernatural genre one and I love to read this genre. There is so much to read in this genre and when I actually I get to know about the second part of the book so before reading that I read the first part, obviously. I liked the story because there was something that is new in the story. If you talk about this genre, Cassandra Clare, Nikki Landis are two of my favourite authors. But Crystal is not bad as well. She did a great job with this book.

The plot is strong. I liked the way she wrote the story. The characters were strong, and I liked how they developed in the book. There were so much happening in the book. But on few stages, I felt some unease in the story otherwise I liked the book. What I not like in the book is few sections in the middle of the book, that's why settling for 3 stars otherwise 4 stars would have been fine.

Off to next!

So a lot of people had issues with the anti religious comments made in this book. I honestly didn’t think there were that many made, and to be frank.... I felt they were necessary for the foundation of the plot. So, my honest opinion is to not take it personally (it -is- a book after all) and to wait and see where she goes with it.

Now, the reason I’m only giving it 4 stars is not because of the religious biz, but because I felt the heroine accepted everything too quickly. That part of the plot progressed extremely fast and I felt it would have added to the story to have SOME disbelief. However our girl just accepts everything said to her. As a result it felt like the first book was mildly anticlimactic and was short.

There were also some grammatical errors but nothing serious. I’ll continue with the series just to see what happens and see if it progresses better.

Deja cut all ties to her strict religious upbringing and sheltered life the day she stepped off the bus in San Francisco. Taken under the wing of a young woman who saved her from a pickpocket, Nona isn’t just an employee at her tiny tea shop, she’s also Deja’s best friend. So when they visit a grand opening for another small business, Nona is the one who drags her to a Tarot Card reading:

The Tower. The Lovers. The Devil.

And with three cards, Deja’s life will never be the same. A past she can’t remember. A mysterious family member she’s never met. And three seductive bad boys who all appear to be courting her. With one Tarot Card reading, her life is forever changed and as the clouds of her past start to clear, so too does her future start to come into focus with a new power and purpose.

I found this book to have a different take on witches in general. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I had enjoyed the book. In the book you find yourself with a witch who didn't know she had powers. At an opening party one of her friends had at her shop, Deja had a strange encounter between a tarot reader, and a trio of very hot guys who were in attendance. The next day after she closes her tea shop, she meets her maternal grandmother, and finds out that she was adopted at birth.

I don't want to spoil the story for any readers, but within you will find out more about witches and demons along with Deja whose world was turned upside down.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it gets released on the Kindle.

Great start to a new series

I really like this story a bit different to the usual urban fantasy and reverse harem books out there and I've read a lot! This is a good start to the series and was more background and character building so I'm hoping the next books are longer with more action. This book was full of mystery and I like the fact the main character deja isn't an 18 yr old twit she is 28 has grown up and is dealing with the fact her life was a lie. I'm not sure where this is going but I have high hopes for this story and can't wait to find out what happens next i haven't enjoyed a starter book like this since afterlife by another of my favourite authors and this has so much potential.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Good but a little too short

The length of this book is really my only complaint. It took me hardly no time at all to fly through this book. The story with Deja is creative yet puzzling at the moment. Obviously Deja is not just a witch, but something more which we have been given clues about but nothing concrete or confirmed. So many little pieces are given which just raises more questions. How and why Deja ended up the way she has? Why her adoptive parents fostered such a sheltered life and cutting her off from her only blood relative? Why the demons know who she is, but she doesn’t? Why they had to wait thousands of years for her to come back? The author has begun to weave quite the complex and intriguing plot line for Deja in this series.
