Riding the Tempest

Polly Fairchild has just turned twenty-one. To say that she celebrated her birthday would have been to suppose that anybody had remembered or cared that the event had taken place. In the eyes of our modern world, she’s a young woman with her life before her. In her world - post Civil War London, thriving and reborn following civil war, plague, and fire - she’s an old maid who will likely spend her life as a spinster. She is stuck in the boarding school that has been her home for the past thirteen years. Her father, a respected judge and attorney at law in the New World, dispatched her to the other side of the world following the death of her mother. Five thousand miles away from her father, she has found, at least, respect for her own merits, rather than a life lived under the sad cloud of grief and disappointment.

Polly has long since come to terms with the notion that she isn't wanted, but then a letter arrives which contradicts her assumptions. She is given an opportunity to undertake a journey that will change her life.

Nathanial Weston's life was tied to the sea before he left his mother's womb, but it hasn’t turned out quite as he expected. As the son of a fisherman, he always knew his life lay out on the waves, but being press-ganged into the Navy changed the path of his future. Now he is Captain Nate West, a mutineer turned pirate. He owns a fearsome reputation and commands a skilled and vicious crew. He is further away from his first life than he has ever been.

Nate is chasing a valuable prize in order to pay a debt, but when he captures it, he finds a treasure beyond anything he ever expected or even dreamed; one that might prove life-changing…

I am an incredibly average person with an overactive imagination.

I was the kid in class who was always being called out for daydreaming. I live in the north of England, in the foothills of the Pennines, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. There’s a lot of history here, and with the derelict mills, bleak moors and lush river valleys, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found.

I’m a wife, mother and spinner of plates. Writing is my passion, inbetween raising the rug rats, keeping house and working. It’s my escape. I have no particular genre that I prefer. I go wherever my mental wanderings take me.

I discovered Fan Fiction in September 2012 and started writing for it in October 2012 thanks to a house move that meant most of my books spent a couple of months packed up in someone else's garage. Fan Fiction gave me a place to practice, a place to learn and the inclination to try writing original fiction. Then I signed up for National Novel Writing Month 2013. The result was Powerless, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I’m privileged to be part of a group of women who as well as being my friends, are inspirational, motivating and supportive writers. We are the Freak Circle Press and you can find more information at our blog: tfcpress.wordpress.com and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/freakcirclepress

I liked this, but when at the 70% mark h/H left each other without any issues, I had an issue with that. That brought my enjoyment of this down quite a bit. Otherwise fairly typical pirate romance.

I loved it! Catherine Johnson's writing took me to another world. She continues to thrill me with her fearless forays into genres unfamiliar to her. I adore her Kairos MC series, paranormal books and The Erythleh Chronicles, her fantasy series. With Riding The Tempest, Johnson gives us her first Historical Romance and boy, does she deliver! This gritty, sexy, realistic tale featuring Pirates (who in my opinion are the original 1%er's) paints a vivid picture of outlaw life on the high seas. If you love intelligent, exciting characters, riveting storytelling, smart dialog, rough heroes and strong female leads, one-click Riding the Tempest now. This book is no old-fashioned historical romance. Johnson's talent for capturing intensely emotional, sometimes graphically violent situations while providing believable romantic relationships is masterful. Her characters always have depth, layers to who they are. Nate and Polly's steamy, well-paced love story and attraction to each other is enormously satisfying. Their well deserved happy ever after had me starry-eyed.
Catherine Johnson continues to be one of the most underrated and undiscovered authors currently publishing, which continues to baffle me. I could not put this book down, and now that I've finished it, I want more! I hope she writes a second book in this world. There are many supporting character's stories I would love to know. For now, I'll re-read Riding The Tempest and binge watch Black Sails. Excellent book.
