First DNF in a long time, and really only a DNF because it's an omnibus. I did finish the first novel, but won't be continuing. It didn't catch my interest enough to dedicate more time to the world. Fairly mediocre and cliched with unimaginative characters, very dense info dumps, and a whole lot of not much happening. There was no overarching plot. It was a few hundred pages worth of what should have been background info before the real adventure begins. There was some potential, but it was not release quality work. I think it would have benefited from an editor (and a copy editor) to help guide the author.
I’ve come to like Benjamin Ashwood as he’s evolved from the common country boy to an experienced adventurer and swordsman. The writing is not the best. Each book ends the same way...with them running for their lives after a close call. But since it’s a boxed set, you can keep reading. This isn’t a Brandon Sanderson magic system and setting. The convoluted explanations of the magic workings push me out of the story. But I’ve kept reading so I guess I’m willing to put up with it to see Benjamin win in the end.
I enjoyed this box set of 6 books, once it got going. I liked the nobilty of Ben Ashwood, brave, honest and principled. The other major characters are a bit cliched, but it's entertaining enough to finish the six books. As a ''sword and sorcery'' they tick all the boxes.
I'm pretty old, and I felt the narrative was a bit simplistic, more aimed at young adults. Some of the grammar and spelling annoyed me greatly, but that's my problem really, didn't detract that much from the story.
I really enjoyed this story. It must be difficult for an author in this genre to make his or her tale different but the characters of this are what makes it stand out amongst the usual swords & sorcery books I’ve read. Fast paced and plausible I’m really looking forward to reading the next three books.
Full of adventure and magic, the characters are well written and developed nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books in the beginning of this series.
