The Wrong Game

Rate this book
Taylor Lawson - Tall, tanned, and stupidly muscular, Taylor Lawson was the definition of a bad boy-an overconfident footballer whose arrogance knew no bounds. His deep brown eyes were a thing of beauty-enough to make you want to bare your soul to him and a whole lot more. When his father was sent to prison, Taylor's life spiralled out of control. Everything he thought he knew was a lie, and his passion for the game took a backseat to everything else in his life. Wasted, and angry at the world, Taylor could see no way out. He was soon forced to realise that not everything in life was easy. But fighting your fears and taking back control is the easy part. Learning to hold on to that control would be Taylor's biggest challenge yet. Lola Henderson - After the accident that ripped her world out from underneath her feet, Lola struggled to find her place in the world again. Living through an endless nightmare, so scared an unsure of herself, and with fear playing a continuous loop, she was fighting a losing battle. Winslow Falls was meant to be the fresh start she needed to find herself again, but when she locked eyes with the star striker on the college football team, she knew she was done for. Would Lola continue to avoid the boy that made her feel things she knew was wrong? Or would fate throw them together, forcing them on to an unlikely path of friendship? Maybe Taylor was exactly who she needed in her life to overcome the fear that plagued her every day. "Two wrongs didn't make a right. But in our case they did."

Charlie M. Matthews is a hopeless romantic, lost in her own world of fairy tales and adventures. Mum to three beautiful children, Charlie lives in a small village on the outskirts of Oxfordshire, England. Between school runs and generally doing the whole 'mum' thing, you'll most likely find her relaxing on the sofa in her jammies with a glass of wine and her trusty kindle in her hands. A lover of art and painting, she'd happily trade in her everyday clothes in exchange for a paint smudged shirt, but fate stepped in and took her creativity down a path she never expected. The first time she put pen to paper, a writer was born, and Charlie has never looked back since.

I took the book to the work so I can finish it in the bus on the way home but you know what? I will rather look from the window for 40 minutes that continue with this bullshit.

She is the most beautiful girl at school but she doesn‘t believe it and has to be assure about her beauty 24/7, he cannot say a sentence without cursing. They argue over trivialities and it seems like the author gathered every possible drama and plot twists from other books and put them into this story.

Not recommend.

The Wrong Game by Charlie M. Matthews is an amazing love story set against a backdrop of raw and gritty real life issues. Both Taylor and Lola have been through their own versions of hell and somehow managed to come out the other side.

Right from the very first sentence, Charlie drags you into the story, and you know you're in for a hell of a ride. She doesn't pull any emotional punches, gripping readers by the heartstrings and twanging on them almost constantly throughout the story.

Her characters are real and flawed, but ultimately trying to navigate young adulthood while trying to avoid the land mines life constantly seems to throw at them. They are scarred by their experiences, but somehow refuse to be broken.

Taylor's entire world was thrown off its axis when his dad was sent to prison and his mum began to look for answers to her problems in the bottom of a bottle. He's defensive and turns to his own vices to cope. His inner monologue will break your heart in places. While he's busy acting cocky and cracking jokes, he's a little bit broken on this inside. Charlie has written his character beautifully, vividly capturing every aspect of his personality and making him leap from the pages and make you wish he was real. God, I wish he was!

Lola has been through a trauma so terrible that her mind has shut down in order to protect her from the truth of what happened. Trying to cope with the loss of her memories, she throws herself into college, wary and guarded because how can she let somebody inside when she doesn't even truly know who she is? Her journey, too, is a heart wrenching one, so make sure you stock up on tissues before you read.

The supporting characters are just wonderful, too. Some of whom I definitely want to see more of. *Begs the author for more* Jake has to be one of Miss Matthews' finest creations to date. I doubt I'll be the last person to go swoony over him. *Hearty eyes*

The writing is just gorgeous, with some sentences and paragraphs where I just had to sit back and sigh with happiness at the perfection of what I was reading. You know the ones, where the words have come together so perfectly that the picture they paint in your mind just screams to life in vivid technicolor. This is a truly gifted author and it's a privilege to have the opportunity to read her words. The writing is smooth and easy to read. She doesn't get bogged down in long-winded descriptive passages, but gives the reader just enough to paint the scene perfectly without you losing interest. It is never forced but feels natural and the pacing is spot on. There are twists and turns in the story that actually had me gasping out loud. The plot is cleverly developed, leaving you guessing about certain aspects until the big reveals when your jaw drops and you can't help but message the author at 4am in shock and awe! BRILLIANT STORY TELLING!

As you can tell, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for more by this author. I have everything crossed that the next time I see a book by her, it'll be about my Jake. MY Jake.

I would give this book a thousand stars if I could. <3

My Review:

It may just be a modern-day miracle and could well qualify for Ripley’s… The Wrong Game was a YA/NA hybrid high-angst book that still managed to intrigue me, hold my attention from beginning to end, and all without the need to guzzle a bottle of wine to numb my senses. My mouth is still open from my jaw falling to the floor – I am stunned at the realization that the major elements in this book involved tropes I typically eschew. However, it also contained an addictive, well-paced, and nuanced storyline; flawed yet complicated and compelling characters; layers of twisted secrets and mysterious histories; and heartbreaking miscues and questionable circumstances. Despite periodically wanting to smack each one of the impossibly young yet jaded characters in turn, I had considerable difficulty putting my kindle down due to Ms. Matthews’ emotive and sneaky storyline. I fear she may be habit-forming. I well recalled from reading Scott Jenkins’ Road to Wonderland that Ms. Matthews takes considerable enjoyment in tormenting and torturing her characters by assigning them countless disappointments, soul-sucking traumas, and Herculean struggles. Despite knowing this ahead of time, her magical word powers still managed to lure me into her web, hold me hostage for hours on end, squeeze my cold black heart, and forced me to care for these hopelessly broken people. Sigh, how does she do that?

This one was a freebie that sounded like my kind of read, so I clicked and was not disappointed. I enjoyed this YA standalone story of a college/school romance that contained an intriguing twist to it. I also liked that it was set in England, which changed things up a little from the previous books that I have read in this genre.

"There was this girl—so shy and unsure of herself—quiet and timid,
until that first stroke of heat danced upon her.
Once lit, she would become this big force of energy
that you couldn’t tear your eyes away from,
never wanting to miss a single second of it. A firebox."

This story focuses on football player, Taylor and Lola, a girl who was trying to start a new life after an accident had turned her world upside down. I liked the main characters of the story a lot. Taylor had been a player and a bit of a bad boy in the past, however with Lola, I saw a whole new side to him that I loved. As usual with a YA story there was the common teenage problems, but when Taylor and Lola were together they made a lovely couple and I adored the change in Taylor. I rooted for their relationship to work every step of the way. The development of their relationship, as well as the fact that I was curious to see what would happen with Lola, kept me turning those pages and as I reached the final few chapters, I was happy with how everything came together for this young couple.

"In reality, we shouldn’t have worked.
But in our case, two wrongs did make a right,
because despite the odds, we had each other and
together we could find that balance we needed in order to survive."

If you love young adult sports romance, this one is for you.

I was very excited to read this book from seeing the teasers that were out and it did not disappoint! This was one of those – I’ll just read one more chapter – books only to look at the clock to see it is closer to wake up time than go to bed time!

There were so many ups and downs in the book that every time I tried to put it down, I couldn’t because I needed to know what was going to happen next.

I love how the author brought the main characters, Lola and Taylor, to life. We knew there was something to their past and throughout the book we got a glimpse here and there to help us put the puzzle of their pasts, together.

I couldn’t read this book fast enough to see how it would end and when it was done, I was sad that it was over. I definitely recommend this book and this author!

This book is amazing! I hadn't read the author before so didn't know what to expect, but what I found was a book that gripped me from the beginning. I totally fell in love with Lola and Taylor and was rooting for them the whole time. The added mystery of her amnesia and Taylor's family kept me guessing right up until the end. Overall I LOVED this book and read it within two days (which is very rare for me).

Wow, this book is amazing! It draws you in from the start, you are taken on a roller coaster of emotions and spat out at the end. It's a romance story set against a backdrop of pain, emotional turmoil and family secrets that when revealed destroy relationships and families. The story pulls on your heart strings and is full of feels, keep tissues handy as you will need them! Taylor and Lola have both been through hell, both dealing with their problems differently, both barely getting by. Together they shouldn't work, but they mesh together beautifully, they have a powerful chemistry between them. The path to true love never runs smooth, these two have more hurdles to overcome than most to get a happy ever after. Lola has to find a way to remember, Taylor needs to stop his self-destructive ways. Told in dual point of view, at times it's hard to read as their inner thoughts literally gut you. This is a beautiful, love story with real life problems and emotions that will have you invested in Taylor and Lola's relationship and rooting for them to find their way. This is the first book I've read by this author but it won't be the last, this is one of my favourite books so far this year. 5 amazing *

Writing is very amateurish. Predictable, boring, forgettable. My opinion. I paid for the book so I feel that I should say how I feel.
I bought this book for $3.49 and I regret it. I want my money back!!!
The dual POVs are repetitive. The author should have stuck to one POV. It could have been a good book.

description

Drama galore….
Drama. Around every corner and conversation. Heartfelt. Quiet. Loud. Surprising. Shocking. Every chapter of this emotional read takes some turn at the dramatic wheel.
Lola and Taylor are college students with seemingly very little in common. Young, handsome, talented, Taylor is ruling the football field, with the world his for the asking. Including any girl that catches his eye. Lola, on the other hand, is doing all she can to fit in quietly. She wants to concentrate on her studies as she continues to face, and battle, the inner demons that haunt her. Their facades are just that and the revelations keep coming as their friendship allows the layers to be peeled away, one after the other…
I was ready for tortured angst. Anticipated it. And I certainly found it. Lola and Taylor’s problems were not minor. They were life-altering, major issues involving family and their life. And I soon came to care about them and their problems. I liked these characters who fought hard to figure out their place in a world that didn’t make sense to them most of the time. They bonded over a growing attraction as well as an “us against the world” mentality and that wasn’t easy to do considering their own fears were often their worst enemies.
I admit the drama became wearing after a while as it was relentless. They were young characters and it showed in questionable choices and actions. The sheer head-spinning nature of the back and forth – as well as the details of that back and forth - left me dizzy on more than one occasion.
Did I like this story? I did. The story was not fluffy but it was filled with emotion that I couldn’t help but get caught up in. Was I disappointed in the speed and frequency of “about faces”? Yes I was. At the end of the day though, and the book, I knew this was an author I would read again if just for the sheer honesty of her voice.

Ok!

This was the first book that I've read by this author. I love YA college romances so I was intrigued to start this one. The first half of the book was pretty slow for me. I wanted more angst...or something, but it didn't come. The second half of the book was a faster pace. The characters had more depth. The plot was stronger. I liked how both characters had a past. They both had issues to work through. I actually felt sorry for them both at one point of another. But I also wanted to jump into the book and strangle them as well. Lol! I did see the father twist playing out like that, but I'm happy it got the ending it got. I would have liked to see how they were further on down the line, but that's just my preference. If you like a YA college romance then this is a book for you.

The Wrong Game by Charlie M Matthews is just a brilliant story about about friendship, heartache, love with a bit of angst thrown in. So glad at last to read a sports book set in the uk and about football(soccer). The author really knows how to tell a story, she draws in from the first chapter and doesn't let you go until the last word. I adored the story of Taylor and Lola and their ups and downs of their time in collage.took me back to mine and the memories i have of that time. Cannot wait wait to read more of her work, It's truly is such a beautiful story.

Amazing storyline

I've sat on my review for a few days, giving myself time to reflect on this terrific storyline, because it is.
My issue and this is nothing to do with the storyline is I prefer to read about characters a little older, but I was drawn to the cover firstly.
Now I've mentioned it I'll carry on with the rest of my review. The story surrounding Taylor and Lola is anything but straightforward and is by no means predictable. I for one loved all the twists and turns that the author provides. The author deals with real life issues that surrounds this young couple.
This story takes the readers on a heartfelt journey alongside the characters.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book to others.

I make no secret of the fact that, even though this is only Charlie’s second release, I’ve known this girl can write for years. There’s a rawness to her talent, one I don’t think even she is aware of, and this book just oozes everything that is special about Charlie’s writing when she’s telling a story she’s passionate about.

This may seem like a classic boy meets girl, girl meets boy, they fall in love and BAM book, but trust me… it isn’t. There are so many twists and turns in this story, you’ll be knocked off your feet more than you can imagine. While reading it, I kept waiting for the things I thought were going to happen to happen. But they never did. I was smacked up the side of the head with a surprise plot spade every two seconds, and oddly, I couldn’t get enough of those hits. There are some stories you read, and half way through them, you have an idea of where they’re going to go. Not with The Wrong Game. Taylor and Lola keep you guessing, your head spinning, your heart twisting, and your mind soaring the whole way through.

Taylor is… sigh… beautiful. I just LOVED him. Yeah, he comes across as the typical college playboy at first, but there are so many layers to his character that you can’t help but fall in love with him and all his sides. Especially his bad ones. Charlie created a realistic, believable human in Taylor. One that was flawed beyond all measure, but one you couldn’t help but root for when the going got tough. The same can be said for the incredibly charming, yet feisty Lola. She’s what we all secretly see ourselves as being. Calm on the outside, a little lost sometimes, but with a fire in our bellies that will explode when provoked. Only Lola had no chance of fighting off anything when it came to Taylor. They both have secrets that haunt them and pasts that just will not play ball (excuse the pun) but once you find out what those secrets are, your mind will ex-pa-lode.

Charlie’s storytelling abilities blew me away. I knew she was good, but I had no idea she was The Wrong Game good. And you know what? I have a feeling this is just the start for her. I have a feeling this is just an appetiser of what she’s going to serve up for us in the future. If I’m right then I can honestly tell you all that I can’t wait to sit down at her table and guzzle down whatever she serves up to me next.

She’s got talent. This story has got heart. You’ve got the opportunity to be a part of it. Do it. Do it now. Read the damn book. You have no idea what game Charlie M. Matthews is about to play with you, but if this book is wrong, I don’t want to be right. Read it. Devour it. Fall in love like you’re young again. I did. I’d do it all again tomorrow.

Well for this being my first read by this author i was not left feeling disappointed as this story had so much packed in.
Lola is suffering memory loss after a car crash as a teenager and has forgotten her whole life until then.
Taylor had a good childhood until suddenly it all changed for him.
Both main characters have an incredible journey to get through before they can even be there for each other... im not giving any spoilers but these guys are such charcters seperate never mind together.
Fab writing and ill definitely read more by this author especially Jake's book who plays a big part in this book.

As a football fan I was looking forward to reading this book because there are not many written based around football ( soccer ).
However don't be put off if you aren't a sports fan because although the two main male characters both play football for their college and dream of playing professionally , the football plays along in the background with the main focus of the story being Taylor and Lola .
Taylor pretends to be the bad boy of the team, giving everyone the illusion everything is fine but the facade masks his despair. Lola is the new girl but has issues of her own because she has lost her memory due to an accident and is trying to find out who she really is. They slowly become friends and she sees a different side to Taylor. They are attracted to each other but they find it hard to cope with a relationship with all their other issues. They are both complicated with many layers and it is interesting how they deal with their problems . There is a great selection of other characters , I particularly liked Taylor's cousin Jake and the bond they had both on the football pitch and off. There are many twists and turns throughout the book along with some surprises and shocks. The author shows what affect family secrets can have on a person and she also covers many of the problems young adults face growing up , especially what some of them go through at college. This is an emotional read on many levels but there are also places where I laughed and cheered . This was my first book by this author which I thoroughly enjoyed and I am looking forward to reading Jake and Mel's story next as I thought she made a good 'bad girl'.

4.5 stars for this fabulous story!

When I opened the book at the first page I really didn't know what to expect. The Wrong Game is the first book by this author that I have read and it certainly won't be the last. I was hooked from the very first chapter and unable to put my kindle down until the very end.

Although this is a sports romance I actually enjoyed that so much of the story was away from the pitch. I adored the characters Taylor and Lola. I fell for Taylor almost as instantly as all the girls on campus seem to do. But there is more to this typical young college man. Taylor has a ton load of baggage to carry with him and even though we see him struggle to deal with his past, he is the most caring person underneath it all. He meets Lola and falls for her on first sight. Not used to having feelings towards someone is a challenge for him, plus Lola also has a lot from her past to deal with too and I hoped that through all the twists and turns in their story that they would find themselves together in the end.

I felt that the secondary characters in the story played their parts brilliantly. The revelations towards the end of the book have me wanting to dive straight into the next book - A Different Game. I felt a great connection between all the characters in this novel. My stomach was in turmoil for much of the story as I hoped everything would work out well for both Taylor and Lola.

I thought the author wrote about the various situations that the characters faced in the story and effects that they can have on individuals perfectly. I felt every emotion possible and I hope that you enjoy this story as much as I did.

I fell in love with Charlie Matthews' writing when I read her debut, Scott Jenkins' Road To Wonderland, so when I heard about this one, I couldn't wait for it to be released.
I absolutely loved Lola and Taylor's story. Taylor was one of the most exasperating characters I have ever read. I wanted to hate him, I truly did, but I couldn't bring myself to stay angry for long. His cheeky humor had me laughing more than once. Lola was one that felt a bit more reserved to me. But her story almost demands that she be. She is the bookworm, the studious one, the good girl. Taylor was the bad boy athlete that would change her world forever.
The story itself was unique in the fact that it took a trope that everyone seems to either love or hate...the good girl/bad boy, and put a YA/contemporary spin on it and make it totally Charlie Matthews. It's a story that will suck you in and you will not be able to put it down. It's well paced, well told, and has the right amount of drama/angst/sexiness to satisfy just about anyone. Every time I picked up my Kindle I thought to myself, oh just a few chapters. Before I knew it, I had half the book read.
The Wrong Game was a total hit for me and I loved every word. I can't wait to see what Ms Matthews has in store for us next.

>Book Review – The Wrong Game
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is a standalone sports romance with an HEA. The book takes place in England, so some of the phrasing is different than American English. Taylor is a footballer, which in England is a soccer player. He comes from a broken home and is using soccer as an escape. He is also really good at it and at one point the book mentions a chance at going pro, but nothing is ever made of his chance once the story gets going. Lola is an amnesia victim, attending college and trying to re-learn herself.
>Taylor falls for Lola, but treats her horribly, then apologizes multiple times in the story. His cheating really cheapens his relationship with Lola. There is a big reveal for Taylor that really seems anti-climactic. Lola regains her memory and really suffers, yet Taylor leaves her. Lola also becomes a therapist, but without any kind of degree, which is unrealistic.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 3 stars. The story had potential, but there were too many parts of the plot that just fell flat.

I'm quite partial to a sports romance book and one set in the UK about football is right up my pitch...get it? Football. Pitch....never mind. Don't get me wrong I'm not a massive football fan but I DO like footballers ;)
Enter The Wrong Game. This is an extremely enjoyable read that kept me thoroughly entertained the whole way through.

Most times while reading a book my mind is always ticking away in the background trying to figure out where the story will go, what the 'twist' may be....a lot of the time I'm able to guess key plot events but with this one I was guessing the whole time, and I was wrong wrong wrong. Wow! Did NOT see it going that way.

Ms. Matthews' was able to depict these characters so fully that you cannot help but love and root for them to get their happily ever after.
Taylor is a loveable rogue that you can't help but fall for and Lola is a feisty sweetheart that you can totally empathise with.

I predict many more good things to come from this fabulous lady...Watch this space!

I had to do this review while the emotions of the entire book were fresh in my mind.

This is the first Charlie Matthews book I've read and I can honestly say it's in my top 3 reads of 2017. The emotions I felt while.reading this went from laughing my ass off to crying my heart out because Charlie Matthews stomped all over it.... well maybe it was Taylor that ripped my heart out but it's still her fault. ;)

Taylor... Wow what can I say.. I went from loving him to hating him, to loving him again. He was an ar$ehole but he had his reasons (not that i agree with what he does) but you will still be rooting for him to sort himself out.

Lola.. I absolutely loved Lola. After what she goes through, you see her blossom from a shy, timid girl to a confident and amazing women.

Both Lola and Taylor, to me are a perfect couple and Charlie Matthews has written their story beautifully.

Charlie Matthew is going to be my new 1click, without a doubt, author and this book deserves way more then 5 stars.

This book talks about Lola a girl who had an accident which caused her to lose her entire memory, trying to have a fresh start she enrolls in college only to came face to face with the Hot football star who in his turn suffers trying to deal with his own problems.

In the middle of all the drama that love inspires they find them selves counting on each other to help each other get over their losses and live the lives that they both want.

The story in all was kind of cool, I mean the misunderstood girl falls for the star bad boy and all is kind of cheesy but then again I love cheesy but what I don't like is dragging, I mean come on using complete chapters to talk about feelings is kind of a wist if I wasn't so damn curios about the ending which also had been dragged I would've quieted this book in the first few chapters hens the Rating.

All in all a not so bad read with a nice story line that would've worked for me if it just didn't drag that much.

3.5 Stars-Too YA For My Liking

While Charlie M. Matthews gives his readers a nice, solid romance, I found it a bit young for me. Yes, there is some sexy in it, however not enough angst and back and forth if you will.

Lola and Taylor are young and in the primes of thier lives, however each is carrying a past that is constantly weighing them down. They started as friends and ended up more, but with the past still in the present, they have a lot of hurdles to overcome.

Set in a college scene, the actions came across as immature and more high school feeling. Lots of misunderstandings and using others for jealousy purposes. For some reason I didn't feel a connection with either character and that stuck with me throughout the book.

The Wrong Game is well written from dual points of view, with a short epilogue to wrap things up.
