Kellan Thorne loves the Christmas season above all else. He plans a well-deserved rest consisting of parties with friends and watching Christmas classics with Shannon. The Sentinel definitely wants to avoid anything more supernatural than the spirits seen by Dicken's Ebenezer Scrooge. However, Fate has different plans for the Kellan and his Soulborn when they find themselves swept up with gods, goddesses, and Mantels of immense power.
As the eternal battle between Order and Chaos continues to play out, Kellan quickly finds himself at odds with forces beyond both his understanding and ability to control. Lucifer weaves new webs of intrigue with which he seeks to entrap both Meghan and Juliet while pitting Maurius against Kellan at every turn.
New and familiar allies put their lives on the line as an enigmatic druid from Kellan's past promises the Sentinel power sufficient to make both the mountains of heaven and caverns of hell quake with fear. Such tremendous strength comes at a price which Kellan and Shannon must decide if they are willing to pay.
To safeguard all those he holds dear, Kellan must breach a celestial treasury sealed shut at the dawn of creation, and pull forth A Wizard's Soul.
....and yet, this book wasn't as good as the previous two. It was a good story, filled with the usually shenanigans The Sentinel finds himself in, but something was off in the story. The pacing slowed down considerably, and while i do appreciate a little holiday cheer, there was a bit too much of it. For instance, James' white elephant party could have been skipped altogether.
The other parts of the of the story, Merlin, Soul Guff, Lucifer, Gaia, Vampire baby, and demon turned human, more than balanced out the Christmas explosion.
Overall, i thought the book was ok. I'm still very much interested to see what happens next, just hope Ross got his holiday fix for the remaining 4 books.
I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:
★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will). ★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this. ★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad. ★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time? ★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.
4,5 stars for this. Still a really good series far from the best I've read. It relies heavily on material from other books and tv series. A tad bit too much Imho, that aside however. It is a good story and I can see that it might become a long promising series. I finally felt that there was some growth in this series and some originality to it and I really hope it continues in that fashion.
I've had enough of this series. There's some good stuff in here but the characters are all a single note. Even the protagonist is snarky/witty 90% of the time and angry the rest. There's no rise and fall; no dynamic range.
