Sad to see this title go, to be honest.

description

Instead of this just being a sappy farewell, there's an actual action-packed story here and it's pretty good.
The gist is that an older version of Tim Drake from an alternate timeline (I think) is hopping through the multiverse correcting problems. And by correcting, I mean killing.
Worse, the way he's traveling is causing him to become a bit unhinged. Unfortunately for Jon, Tim has seen a version of their future where Jon (potentially because of Damien) wipes out a nice chunk of humanity with an uncontrolled power flare.
And Drake intends to correct it.

description

I don't want to spoil anything important about the plot but it does showcase how their budding friendship has changed Damien for the better. But since I haven't been following all of the DC Rebirth titles as closely as I should, there were a few new (to me) characters and plotlines that showed up that threw me off. I wasn't sure who/what/why this Tim Drake was or where his friends the other/older Titans came from. <--nobody's fault but my own, though.

description

The ending was sufficiently sappy in a non-sappy way. Which means I made the little awwww! sound when it was over.
Highly Recommended.

"I'm going to keep you safe. We'll figure this out. Friends help each other, right?" - Damian 'Robin' Wayne

"I thought we were just partners?" - Jon 'Superboy' Kent

"Shut up, Jon." - Damian 'Robin' Wayne

More entertaining than Vol. 3: Parent Trap, this edition is really a crossover event featuring Superman, Batman, and the Teen Titans. The story begins uniquely with an alternate-timeline Tim Drake, attired as a homicidal version of the Dark Knight, getting absolutely medieval on Bruce Wayne at stately Wayne Manor and then putting a severe smackdown on Superman up at the Fortress of Solitude.

The scene shifts to the Teen Titans in action - Robin is a member, but Superboy is just a companion - as they encounter Drake, now in the Red Hood-esque persona of 'Savior.' (Or, as Robin amusingly refers to him, 'BatDrake.') Savior wants to take Superboy out of the equation to prevent a possible future tragedy. The team is split on the matter - protect Superboy or throw him to the wolves?

Even more guest stars are introduced and the action / drama is kicked up to the next level. Then it all concludes on a poignant note with the boys. It was one of the more effective endings (since it side-stepped going in a certain predictable direction) I've encountered in a graphic novel this year.

The future Tim Drake from Detective Comics returns to kill Jon Kent before he accidentally explodes and kills thousands of people. Full of fun and excitement, this thing explodes off the page. I like how Tomasi tied in the future Titans of Tomorrow from Geoff Johns's run on Teen Titans. I'm wondering how this future Titans timeline fits in now that the timeline was erased by the New 52. (DC's continuity is pretty much indecipherable at this point.) Anyway, I'm still finding Super Sons to be one of the strongest titles of DC's Rebirth initiative.

Super Sons remains super freaking fun even with a mini-crossover event.

So future Tim drake is back. You know, the one who tried to kill Batwoman. Now that he's back he's not after her anymore, now he wants Superboy! He hunts down Bruce and Clark first, takes them out of commission and then aims his targets on the boy. Now it's up to Damien and the Teen Titans to fight off the future killer Batman before he gets what he wants.

Good: The art once again remains very well done. The surprise cameos of certain character pre-flashpoint is wonderful throwback and really fun. The interactions between Jon and Damien was really well done and watching a friendship grow is awesome. The ending leads to some interesting future possibilities.

Bad: I think Tim is a little over the top from the future. You'd think he'd talk about it, being as smart as he is, instead of always trying to kill.

Overall a really fun mini-event. I wish Superman went on forever because I'd keep reading it. A 4 out of 5.

[Read as single issues]
The time travelling Tim Drake from Detective Comics is back, and he's got his sights set on Superboy! When the Teen Titans experience a civil war, Damian and Superboy head out on their own to protect each other and the timeline from the Titans Of Tomorrow!

I'm a sucker for the whole 'older-versions-of-teen-characters' trope, and having the Titans Of Tomorrow from Geoff Johns' Teen Titans run appear here had me all excited. This is mostly just a chase-and-battle story, a little like the X-Men's Battle Of The Atom a few years ago, but better executed and 2/3s shorter so it doesn't outstay its welcome. It all ends a bit quickly, but there are a lot of story seeds laid here that are no doubt going to be fun when everything explodes again.

We've got five issues from Super Sons, Teen Titans, and Superman collected here, each with a different artist. On the one hand we get some Jorge Jimenez who I'm a huge fan of, and then some more well known names like Ed Benes and Tyler Kirkham, while Sergio Davila and Ryan Benjamin also get an issue each. From memory, no one stands out particularly as being poor; Davila's issue is surprisingly strong, he's another one of DC's rotating fill-in artists that I think will really come into his own soon.

An exciting, fast-paced crossover story with all my favourite characters (I see you Conner Kent!), feeding off of one of the best arcs of Detective Comics? Yeah, sign me up.

Great concept, wonky execution, real consequences.

World: The art was a bit of a disappointment for me, it started off great with Superman but then Jimenez was missing from the Super Sons issues and the Teen Titans was rather meh. I wish there was more consistency here. The world building here is pretty good. The concept of Tim Drake from the future was done well in Detective Comics and his motivations and characterization was done well there, here this arc is borrowing from that. But that being said, it did feel kinda wonky and the characters did act a little out of character from their normal selves (more on that in the character section). The world is good, the pieces they use and the finale with the huge splash pages was a treat, this is a solid part of the book.

Story: The concept is basic in premise and has been done many times before and is pretty much a comic book cliché (future hero comes back to change the past). The execution and the story itself is the issue. It’s a 5 issue series but it is at the same time to draggy and too quick. It’s too draggy in the endless mindless action that is this event every time character meet they fight and it goes on and on and on to waste pages. Then there is the characters and how they interact and act which needs way more pages for them to develop, the stuff with Raven, and Tim in the end is completely unearned and a waste cause of the action that took all the pages that should have been for characterization. I like the consequence in the end, it was good, it felt real and I like that books have consequence but man the journey to the consequence was mindless, pointless and poorly executed. I’m so disappointed.

Characters: Here is another big issue I had with this event, the characters didn’t have enough time to be characters and they just react and act for the sake of the story. Tim Drake of the future is consistent in drive as he was in Detective Comics but he is much more stupid than his character deserves in this arc, he is rather moronic. Also, can DC ever give him a good name and costume!!?? All his costumes are so fugly and without character that makes it his own (Red Robin looked stupid, New52 Robin suit looks stupid, and man oh man Savior looked like a Midnighter reject). Tim’s turn in the end is completely unearned and just a way for the story to ‘Hal Jordan flying into the sun’ it (making him heroic after all the terrible things he’s done), it doesn’t work and it’s not earned and readers don’t accept it, it’s stupid. Then there’s Raven and Beast Boy which comes out of left field and completely against them as characters, it makes no sense other than the story needing a fracture, the line being drawn makes no sense cause this isn’t even their Tim Drake. These characters deserve better than the poor transparent writing.

This event I was looking forward to but in the end was poorly executed and tested my patience. The consequence in the end is good but the rest of this…it’s a bad story.

Onward to the next book!

This was a pretty fun read!

Tim Drake aka Savior (the villain in detective comics by tynion) is back and he wants to stop Jon because he does something in the future to destroy it and well he knocks down Batman and Superman and goes after him and well the Teen Titans split and Damian has his own agendas and its a split of the team and the fight ensues and also Titans of Tomorrow come in, its a battle on all sides? Can Jon be saved and whatever will happen with Jon?

Its a great volume and it packs so much story here and I love how Tomasi creates these conflicts in the team and explores the friendship of the super sons and sort of gives a redemption to this Tim while also hinting at the big "continuity crisis" of rebirth and a great heart-felt moment between Clark and Conner but the main thing is the art which is so good and lovely and well the best part of the book. One of the better crossovers I have read!

If you're not familiar with Super Sons, it's about Jon Kent (Superboy) and Damian Wayne (Robin) fighting crime together. It's a fun dynamic. On the one hand you have Jon who's a ball of sunshine (if balls of sunshine are allowed to have sarcasm down to an art), and on the other you have Damian who was raised by assassins and takes himself way too seriously. This is the crossover arc that ties into that series. It involves a future version of Tim Drake trying to kill Superboy so that he can't be responsible for thousands of deaths in the future.

It would have been really nice for him to at least act like the idea of killing Jon, of all characters, was painful to him.

The Good

1. As always, I love the dynamic between Damian and Jon, and I love that it actually changes and evolves the further through the series you get.

2. I'd heard Starfire was a princess, but that must have been wrong because the woman is obviously a queen. She's not taking any of future-Tim's bull.

3. I cannot believe that Batman's biggest issue with future-Tim is that he uses guns. Like, the man is literally wiping the floor with you right now, I think he might be past wanting your approval.

4.

5. I'm pretty sure, given Beast Boy's comment, that Conner, Cassie, and Bart all exist in this timeline too and everyone's currently just forgotten them for some reason. Whilst we're on the subject, I love Cassie's Wonder Woman costume for some reason.

6. The art is consistantly good all the way through.

The Bad

1. That is an unexpectedly sullen Bart Allen.

2. Isn't Tim supposed to be smart?

3. Raven and Beast Boy trusting future-Tim because they know current-Tim? Makes sense, I suppose. Superman trusting future-Tim's word after he's locked him up in a red kryptonite cage? Only if red kryptonite affects his critical thinking.

Also, just a general question: the Saviour costume is put together in a matter of minutes from a bunch of different costumes, so why is it so much cooler than the current Red Robin costume? Is that why they didn't call their universe's Tim? Were they scared he'd defect?

Anyway, this was fun. The plot was a bit questionable in places, but the characters more than made up for that.

The return of the Future Tim Drake and he returns to commit more douchebaggery .

Plot holes aside this was a good story arc , and honestly I'd have rated this higher , but my problem with this story is that , we have seen similar story done to death by now . Heck look at the last appearance of Future-Tim and you will see the same pattern . There wasn't much difference in this story to those similar story arc either , leaving us all to ponder what the future awaits . They could have possibly tried to use the other members of the Titans a bit more and maybe then it would have been a slightly different take . But alas they didn't .

In the end , it was all way too similar in terms of plot , having said that , there certainly were entertaining moments .

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

Who lets these heroes have children? Honestly. Basically, this story has Tim Drake from the future, coming back to the current timeline and attacking Batman and trapping Superman in a case of kryptonite so that he has no disruptions in achieving his mission: killing Jon Kent who has killed millions in his world with his powers when he lost control. Jon Kent, who in our timeline is currently 10 years old and desperate to be a member of the Teen Titans with his closest friend/part-time enemy, Damian Wayne. When his emotions are overrun, he proves to the Teen Titans just how powerful he is when he destroys their base with his solar ray power thing (the name now escapes me) and Damian takes him away from the other titans to protect him as they split down the middle between those who agree with Future Tim and those who want to protect Jon. Basically, there's a big fight but then the rest of the future Teen Titans come through the timeline too and find a way to resolve the matter that doesn't kill Jon.

This was fine. I liked the characters, albeit I don't really know all that much about them, but I liked them. I enjoyed the dynamic between Jon and Damian, but I am always left with the same questions when I read books regarding the Teen Titans and superhero children. WHO LETS THESE PEOPLE HAVE KIDS. Particularly Bruce. At least Superman thought Jon was safe in bed and then was unable to go and help. Batman seemingly encourages Damian to fight monsters and villains. Seriously. He's like at most 13.

I do love the Super Sons but in this collection it was Tim Drake of the future battling the Teen Titans with the Super Sons there because Superboy is going to blow up in the future and Tim wants to stop that. I hate alternative reality plots and this one felt VERY forced. Killing a nice kid because he will blow up in the future? Why not stop the event itself? And - sorry but - Tim(e) Drake take down Superman and Batman and all the Teen Titans? Um...no.

Also the TTs felt very weakly developed here. The one plus was the last issue where Robin and Superboy bonded. THAT issue felt like it was a Super Sons story and I loved it.

This book was really good. This story is about: Tim Drake from an alternate timeline comes to kill Superboy. He wants to kill Superboy because, in the future, he explodes and kills millions. My pros are: I love the relationship between Superboy and Robin. I also liked the idea of the story. Peter J. Tomasi has another amazing book. Jorge Jimenez’s drawing was also really good. My cons are: the story was too short. They didn't focus to much on Beast Boy. I also thought that Tim Drake injured and beat Superman and Batman to easy. Overall a really great book! I rate it 4/5! You should consider buying this.

I kind of love who Damian is becoming as Jon's friend. Adorable.

description

I do not like this who future Tim thing. This is just another example of how DC keeps shafting Tim as a character. He's dead in one future. He's crazy from Joker toxin in another future. He's run away and lets everyone think he died in yet another. And he becomes Batman and shoots people with guns now in this one...
When I read this, my first thought was "this is some big ol pile of bull sh*t. Poor Tim. DC writers really don't like him.

The most heartbreaking part of Tim becoming a big ol pile of poop was that Bruce had to come face to face with it in this Vol. They have a crazy (amazingly drawn) fight, spanning pages. Finally, Bruce drops a chandelier on Tim/future Batman. Pinned down, Tim pulls out a gun (!!) and aims it at Bruce!
Bruce: "Hnn. A gun. Even if you're from another timeline... shame on you, Timoth--"
And then Tim F**ing SHOOTS him. Tim shoots Batman. Bruce. Unfrikkin believable.

I really don't like the progression of Tim's character here from Batman to Savior, especially with the JC ending (surprise, surprise with a name like Savior). It didn't make any sense that he was there to change the Timeline (for the greater good) and then is shown smiling at the end, tasked with "protecting the timeline" from anyone that means to endanger it. Kinda like he was gonna do? So, he's a hero now? And we're gonna ignore that he was going to murder innocent people in the past to fix his future. Cool.

I also didn't care for the Teen Titans, though the page where they pick out Justice League seats to sit in around the JL roundtable is adorable (especially Damian's ease at sitting in Batman's spot, Kid Flash and Aqualad's reverence at Flash's and Aquaman's chairs, and Beast Boy's funny face when he chooses Green Lantern's chair).

The ending was bittersweet. Damian and Jon bffs 4 eva!

3 stars overall.

+ I really like the art by Jorge Jimenez and Tyler Kirkham.

I really like this arc. It's probably one of the strongest in Super Sons' limited run.

Future!Tim Drake saw a future Jon loses control and kills several with a solar flare. In response, he travels back to kill Superboy to prevent it from happening. Of course, Damian can't let that happen.

Tomasi and Gleason know these characters and how to use them the best, in my opinions. It's not all about Damian being combative and never progressing past that - it's Damian learning how to work with others and finding his own connections outside being in the shadows of brothers. Jon sees him just as he is - sometimes, he's a jerk, but it's clear that deep down he cares a lot about Jon. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Damian as he was introduced would not have done any of this to protect Jon. This series shows how far Damian has come and just how much Jon has wormed his way into Damian's heart. It's wonderful to see!

It's so hard to see Jon's guilt over what he might someday do. I really like that Damian makes a point to ensure that Jon knows he hasn't hurt anyone.

This arc shows Damian doing everything in his power, taking on the Titans even, to protect Jon - his closest friend. I liked that Starfire and Aqualad sided with trying to protect the boys. One thing that really rubs me the wrong way: Beast Boy and Raven continued to side with someone who clearly came back to kill a child because he looked like their old friend. It kind of makes me wonder why Beast Boy is still on the Teen Titans team at all, to be honest.

The only downside is that this series made it clear just how much a team the Teen Titans aren't. And I can see others blaming Damian for that but... I just don't think that's fair when the writing in that series (aside from the issues here by Tomasi and Gleason) don't show Damian growing the way he does in every other Rebirth series he appears in.

So... yeah, if you're looking for Damian Wayne content, I wouldn't recommend Rebirth Teen Titans.

I really love Damian and Jon's dynamic. It's like they've taken the extremes of Batman's anger and Superman's positivity and rolled them up into miniature versions of the characters.

At the heart of it, this is a story about friendship, although it's not always that obvious. It reminds me of the love Dick Grayson has for Bruce Wayne. Damian and Jon are best buds and that's always going to come first.

Even when Damian is a jerk, he does just want to protect Jon which is really sweet.

I know Damian says he only needs one friend (Dick Grayson), but I'm glad he's found another.

English/Spanish review:

Hey,this was really cool! I thought this was gonna be bad at first but I had a lot of fun.

So there's a future Tim Drake that seems to have appeared on Detective Comics and he's here to kill the shit outta Jon since he seems to explode and wipe out a big part of humanity in the future. I like the idea, but not a fan of that random introduction,I,of course didn't read Detective comics and I had no fucking idea who's him or what's he's done and it is barely explained.

The plot is full of action and it's the good one,the fights are fun,not over the top AND there's a huge comeback for me since my fave Titans run is Geoff's Teen Titans, Vol. 1: A Kid's Game

I am happy to see these guys alive. I kinda thought they were pretty much dead since they haven't appeared for year and there wasn't any mention of where they were. The huge question here is: WTF is DC doing with their continuity? it's uninteligible what's happening nor which timeline exists or not but who cares,I'm glad to see em kicking.

There's lot of cool stuff on this volume: the comebacks, love to see how Damian's changing after meeting Jon,he's getting nicer, can't believe I'm saying that about the kid. The decision about wether or not letting Jon onto the team, the new art was gold,I'd like to see it on the main Teen Titans run,it's better by far.

This made me wanna read the run, tho,it's pretty short, sad since it seems to be better than most of Rebirth.

Read as single issues.

Maybe it's that I read the first two parts back in December, but this...was really confusing. A lot of hustle and bustle and possiblefuture!Tim being a massive dick for reasons I'm still not sure I understand, only to have his own personal 'your mom's name is Martha?' moment at the end. Then again, I know next to nothing about Tim right now since I haven't gotten around to reading his stints as Robin and in the Teen Titans, so maybe this is par for the course?

As it stands, Jon and Damian's partnership and, even more, their friendship (no matter how loudly Damian protests the label) is pure and sweet and everything I want in the often dark world of DC. They've come a long way from Damian poking fun at him for having a reasonable bedtime and dragging Jon for being too young to join the Teen Titans to swearing to Superman himself that he's going to protect Jon from anything that might try to harm him.

-Read for 2019 YA Reading Challenge-

Ok, this one is 'shame on me' for not realizing I started the wrong volume and read this and the last one out of order. FWIW, it had no effect on the overall story being told of Jonathan and Damien as this was a story line of its own. To reiterate, "The Batman of Tomorrow travels to the present to prevent a cataclysmic disaster before it happens, revealing that Superboy will soon be responsible for the deaths of millions." The thing I would point out is "this crossover event is a must-have for Superman, Super Sons and Teen Titans fans alike! Collects SUPER SONS #11-12, SUPERMAN #37-38 and TEEN TITANS #15."
I would argue that it's not actually a "must-have" for literally any of those groups. If you hadn't read this you wouldn't miss anything for any of those titles. I don't know where this Tim Drake Batman came from and I really don't care. This is some of the over-sized nonsense DC does with crossovers that really ruins the continuity of ongoing titles. Their "events" usually aren't all that satisfying and, again, only serve to interrupt the titles I had been enjoying.
Is isn't a must-have, it's at best an ok read.

Note that this is not a volume in the all-too short-lived Super Sons series, but an event, or a crossover, comprising issues of Batman, Superman, Teen Titans, and Super Sons.

Note, also that the track record on DC events is not very good:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/2070...

The Damian-Jonathan dynamic is still pretty enjoyable, but I got a little pain-in-the-event with the ridiculous time travel, solar flare paradoxes.

You can't even call it pseudo-science (all comic book science is pseudo-science), so much as '"Whatever works" doesn't really work.'

At this point, DC is just rubbing their fragmented continuity in our faces:

This was pretty good, art wise and plot wise. I love the friendship between Damien and Jon. This one really has me excited to read the rest of Teen Titans I have, as well as get a hold of Doomsday Clock soon to see how they work out the snarled timeline they made between pre new 52 and rebirth.
I think it is kinda cool to see DC bringing back some plots from the pre 52 era, as it was better (what little I read of that) in my opinion.
A solid cross over between two solid series, as well as Superman.

Bought this cheap for the Jimenez art...and I give it 1 star just for that. (Especially considering he's not even the penciler for every issue)
