Welcome to the world of the Smart Girl Mafia. Interracial love. Hot Men. Nerdy. Geeky. Weirdo. Women. Stay awhile.
Lynn Scott
You know that super-hot guy from high school? The jock. The popular guy. The one you fantasized about when you were supposed to be studying. The ex-Olympic water polo player you expect to be married in his thirties to an ex-beauty queen and driving around Los Angeles in a Mercedes SUV full of kids. The man who could never be as smart and fun as you. The guy who is not supposed to ask you to hook-up during a party. (Correction: He commanded.) That’s Nick Willingham. Even in my thirties with a thriving career, a great home, awesome friends, and a very green, holistic lifestyle, I still circle the box: nerd. And in what world does a nerd end up with the hot guy?
Nick Willingham
Lynn Scott is the woman who is not supposed to say yes. The shy, polite writer who lives in San Francisco. The woman you expect to be married or waiting for some man to choose her. Yeah, that’s not Lynn. And I want her. I want whatever happy ending her dirty mind and perfect mouth wants to create. She’s decided that our thing is just a hook-up with an expiration date less than that of her favorite fresh-pressed green juice. Lucky for me, I like to win. But am I willing to take a wrecking ball to my meticulously handcrafted life to win her?
So, I love the art of writing romance fiction. I’m a character-driven author. My stories are contemporary romance with steam, humor, and diversity. I run my business from my living room. When I am not writing and telling people about my books, I run another online business. Read lots and lots. Watch tons of TV series. Drink coffee and wine. Listen to music. Cook comforting vegetarian meals. Say prayers, meditate, and light candles. Text with my girlfriends. And try to squeeze in a walk and a shower. My sexy little stories are my attempt at making someone’s night. May you always feel loved, seen, and heard. -Amiee Smith
Now this was a book written for all those love hopefuls who enjoy down to earth characters with real problems that relate to the ordinary world, and a spicy spicy romance. Although the only thing that was unneeded were parentheses to convey the characters thoughts. Since it was in the first POV, they could have just remained short sentences without their distracting from the flow of the book. But I adored Lynn and Nick's story and I can't wait for more from the Smart Girl Mafia.
Lynn is an author who gets sucked into her fictional world more often than remaining in reality, writing happy endings for her characters as a romance writer. She has no clue how to make her own happily-ever-after a reality, when on most days she's just trying to manage her ADHD symptoms. After reaching her ideal weight goal, she's been treating herself on her monthly trip to L.A to visit family and friends. And her longtime school girl crush on Nick Willingham, offering a quickie in the backseat of his Mercedes is definitely a "treat yourself" moment.
Nick, a former water polo Olympian, has become attracted to Lynn since their mutual friend's wedding and organized get-togethers, and believed her to be a shy reserved woman waiting for a white knight. But when he proposes a quickie in his car during a lull in the party, he soon finds out just how wild she can be and how wrong his perception has been. Nick realizes that even though she lives over 300 miles away in San Francisco, he somehow wants this woman in his life anywhere he can fit her.
And thus begins an interestingly funny, quirky and weed filled courtship. Nick and Lynn tried to find a balance between their lives and were trying to find space in them for each other. Lynn is an amazing character who did the best that any of us can, which is to work through our flaws and change what we can control. Even though self doubt and insecurities may try to get in the way. She has such a strong sense of self, which was admirable. And Nick was a loving alpha hero who was the perfect man for every fantasy. His life was perfectly ordered before Lynn came crashing in it, but he rolled with the punches and knew when to let her take the driver's seat for a while. It was a well rounded read with a cast of fantastic characters that fleshed out the story. But I don't want to spoil any of the reading enjoyment.
If all the ladies in this series are as fun as Lynn readers are in for a treat. It took a sec for me to get invested but once I got Lynn’s quirkinesses the story flowed. Not an insta romance but definitely a rush to HEA once both realize the potential.
Break Free is Amiee Smith’s debut novel. It had a lot of good features. The story was interesting, there were definitely no cookie cutter characters, and I wanted to know what happened with this couple.
Lynn is a quirky writer who has made a good life for herself despite her own personal struggles. After losing a significant amount of weight, she is ready to let go a bit. The perfect opportunity arises when Nick wants to hook up. Nick seems to have it all. The popular ex-Olympian with money and swagger seems almost too good to be true...at least the way Lynn sees it. However, after getting to know each other a bit more it seems they have far more in common than they realized. Do they have enough to really make things work?
Nick and Lynn had been circling each other for quite some time, so while their relationship seemed to move rather quickly, it didn’t come completely out of left field. However, since it did become serious very quickly, there were times their reactions to each other and the situations they were in seemed a little bit unlikely. In such a short amount of time, they certainly encountered more than their fair share of drama.
While I was interested in how their story went, I had a hard time connecting with this couple. They shared a strong common interest in medical marijuana and fashion which are two things I don’t really know a lot about. There were a lot of details given around the two, and I found them to be a distraction from the story. Their friends, however, seem to have their own unique hobbies, so I look forward to continuing with the series to see if I have a better connection to the other characters.
This story really touched home for me. I have a daughter(and son) that's ADHD and my sister is one of the leading cannibis advocates in CA. Even with that being said, this story opened up my eyes to the world of cannibis. The story between Lynn and Nick was really sweet and the only thing that made the story not flow as well for me was at times I could determine if Lynn was a recently college grad or actually a 33yr old woman. The whole "holy unicorn" on multiple occasions through the story took it from 30-some things finding love to something that took away from the story. Other than that, it was really awesome how Nick wouldn't give up on the idea of them no matter how hard Lynn tried to push him away
First time reading MS. Smith and although I was getting annoyed with the amount of ma##### that they were doing, it was not too bad. It was very educative, from learning about friends support and love, parents, to learning about ADHD and trying to live normally while dealing with everyday life...
What can I say about this book? The title says it all. This story is smart, sassy, sexy, and liberating. I love how vivid the story is and it mirrors some of my dreams and potential ambitions. The characters just fit and the story was hard to put down. I’m anxiously awaiting the sequel 😀
Two atypical yet surprisingly similar main characters, one love story for this day and age. I loved how independent Lynn was, such a boss for setting needed boundaries and sticking to them, and I loved Nick’s respect for her boundaries and for her. Plenty to love about this story, including the always zany Smart Girl Mafia!

I didn't really like this book much. Even though it was a light story without angst (which i prefer), i found myself getting bored with the many details. There were entire pages of description regarding medical solutions with lots of terms and also too much emphasis on clothes and brands. This made me want to skip pages. Also, i didn't like the heroine and the way she behaved towards the MC. I found her selfish and immature. There was steam (lots of it).

First read by this author!! Can I say I love her writing? New Author Crush? Lynn is the woman we all see a little of ourselves. I love her strength, it comes off so quiet and mild then Bam! Nick is “EVERYTHING!” a book boyfriend Hubble should be! Love his determination in nailing Lynn down and claiming her. I adored the side characters! Everything this book was... I enjoyed!! Seriously!! Great Job Ms. Aimee!!
I enjoyed the book and the characters. I love the music and I even picked up her favorite green juice. She made me rethink my food choices. Something I had been already thinking about. I was fascinated by their mutual enjoyment. Never knew there was so much so many to choose from. Looking forward to the next book.
I’m really sad but at this point I’m DNFing this book. It was actually okay but the plot was really lacking. The FMC is a really strong character and personality and yet she literally lets the MMC become her bf after 3-4 days of hooking up AND it’s long distance which they both swear no to. Unfortunately it’s just not believable. Maybe there’s not enough plot points as to why she would just so suddenly be like yeah BF and GF. There were other times in the book where they would talk about something and then literally a few pages later do the exact opposite but not address that they completely did the exact opposite! In my opinion that’s bad writing! My example- they had a conversation about 100% using condoms… then a few pages later they have sex and don’t use condoms AND then there is no conversation as to why they didn’t? It’s just not brought up! Like oh we were so in the moment we didn’t even do what we said blah blah like nothing! So I’ve chosen to DNF @ 63%
This is the first book in the Smart Girl Mafia series. Hot, witty, steamy and so much fun to read. I was pulled into Nick and Lynn's story and couldn't put it down. I stayed up way later than I should have to finish their story. Nick is an alpha male through and through but doesn't try to stifle Lynn's sassy, strong independent personality. This is one of the things I loved about this story, he doesn't try to "fix" her he just loves her for who she is. The more he gets to know her the more he understands her needs and wants. These two are a perfect match for each other but how can Nick convince Lynn to give them a chance when they live in separate cities 400 miles apart? I can't wait to start book two, the Smart Girl Mafia ladies are awesome and a bit crazy.

Lynn and Nick had known each other since high school, both came from well to do families and even shared friends they were close to. Lynn also had a secret that dated all the way back to high school, she had an unending crush for Nick. Thanks to fate constantly bringing them together because of their two friends who were married to each other it was inevitable something would happen. What happened is made known very early in the book but what all happens after, well you have to read the book to find out. Does that first moment of passion go any further? Does distance work for or against the possibility of more than a moment in time? Reading this is worth the time spent to find out what happens next. 4.5 Thoroughly enjoyed this new-to-me author! When I’m not writing I love reading outside of my fantasy/paranormal romance and this lovely contemporary romance did not disappoint! The characters were interesting and realistic. While I know nothing of medicinal marijuana use, I felt like I learned about it outside of the traditional negative views. I appreciated how the author wove together the vices of the couple while showing their growth throughout! I look forward to reading more of this authors writing!
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review. Smart Girl Mafia kicks off with Lynn and Nick. This story takes you into the life of two people dealing with real issues while trying to work thru a connection they feel. There are several obstacles in their way but they navigate them with some humor and help from friends. It was a good story with a lot going on in the character's lives.

I did like reading the love story of Nick and Lynn but I felt there could be more depth to the characters. I did enjoy how there was the diversity in there of Lynn having lost a lot of weight and the day to day management of her ADHD. I feel we need more books out there. Nick and Lynn went to school together. After running into each other again he proposes to hook up. After that one hook up it became more than one. I can’t wait to read more from this author and see where this stand alone series goes.

37 procent gelezen.
It's not a bad book. The start was really good. It's just that the book and I have different values, and that's ok. Lots of people will love this book. But I just don't have an interest in reading about people who sees being a "pothead" as being an important personality trait of theirs. Though I did appreciate that it was for medical reasons.
The main characters in this group have know each other for sometime but it was never a active thought in their minds to be together. So when they get the chance they go for it and all kinds of delicious fun happens.

The one thing that stands out to me in this book series (I've read books 1 & 2) is the incredible friendship between the Mafia girls. I mean they are some serious #girlfriendsgoals in their group. As for the romance and smexy fun - oh yeah, the author brings it in this story big time!.

This was a cute, light book that I really enjoyed. Lynn and Nick were cute together, and I was happy with their HEA. I also liked the other characters, and that it was low angst (I actually really love low angst books, they're my favorite).

Great new read and new to me author. I enjoyed both the MCs finding themselves and holding true to their path together. It made me laugh and at times I could not put it down. I just purchased the next one on the series.

This book took me a bit to get into the story. I felt that the story was all over the place. The characters are likeable and the fit together. The story was interesting. This is a new author for me, so we will see what happens in book 2.
