If you were looking for the Holy Bible of the horror anthologies, consider yourself lucky, because you just found it! Cosmic horror, supernatural events, ghost stories, weird fiction, mystical fantasies, occult narratives, this book plunges you into dark domains and brings you face to face with surreal monstrosities.
This collection of the greatest mysterious dark tales gathers together more than 100 authors and more than 1000 short stories (!), which makes it truly unique in its kind.
Be aware that this book includes a big amount of stories that appear for the first time in digital print.
Lady Cynthia Mary Evelyn Asquith was an English writer, now known for her ghost stories and diaries. She also wrote novels and edited a number of anthologies, as well as writing for children and on the British Royal family.
Her father was Hugo Richard Charteris, 11th Earl of Wemyss (1857 – 1937) and her mother Mary Constance Wyndham (see The Souls). In 1910, she married Herbert Asquith, son of H. H. Asquith, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916.
In 1913 she met D.H. Lawrence in Margate, and became a friend and correspondent.
I have very mixed feelings about this collection. Summarizing as follows:
The Good: This is indeed an extensive collection and offers the benefits of reading multiple short stories by the same author. The collection is grouped by author, and I was introduced to both authors and stories I had not read previously.
The Bad: Formatting is often problematic, with broken lines and numerous typos/OCR errors. I recall finding duplicated text, which makes me wonder how many instances of dropped text I might have missed.
The Ugly: Clearly this collection was "cribbed" from other sites, as this enigmatic entry at Location 50732 (inserted into the narrative of "The Thing in the Forest" by Barnard Capes) indicates: "Sorry if you find this annoying, but you might want to find a site that does the work instead of stealing someone else’s work."

This is a recollection of classic supernatural and gothic works at an incredible bargain price; however, actually read it on my kindle fire was very frustrating. The file frequently crashes, leaving the in infuriated reader to find his way back to page 378 or wherever else he foolishly attempted to turn the page in some gothic time. For me this problem made the book useless and literally unreadable, and for that technical reason I can not recommend it.
Good selection of authors. Nice introductory pieces. Shame about the scanning errors. Ok this is a huge book and not expensive on Kindle. But it would have been nice if the person(s) who lifted these texts from Project Gutenberg had run the text through a type checker. Many annoying scan errors could have been easily removed. I checked the stories and compared them with the Gutenberg scans and they are identical. Did anyone actually read these tales before committing them to an anthology?
This is very sloppy and a little disingenuous. I can deal with the odd typo, but some stories were nearly unreadable. Had a bit of copy editing been applied I would have rated this 5 stars.
This is an anthologhy of horror stories, mostly in the public domain. It wuld be more prudent to post a list of the authors collected here, but it's a big list. Suffice it to say that the horror stories in this are mostly old, so it's a good indication of how what horrifies us has changed over the years, especially if you compare it to, say, You Like It Darker. PLus, stories were a lot longer then. Without movies to inspire you to edit your work, and perhaps because there was more leisure time, stories could be made longer.
This book contains too many authors who seem to be here to fill in the pages. It misses out many authors who I believe are in their own right are Masters of horror. It is also not properly edited and varies between the trying to keep the original author's English style and bad editing.
I thought this collection was exceptional! It's breadth was amazing! So many different authors with such different viewpoints and styles!
I found this collection to be astounding! So many different authors with such varied viewpoints and writing styles. It was also a great mixture of little known stories with classics. Truly enjoyable!
This was a long book to say the least. I read it between books for the most part and then decided to just concentrate on it and finish it. There were some good short stories but there were quite a few that I felt were just filler. If you can put up with the filler, it’s a really good book to have for horror fans. It’s introduced me to some authors I would never have encountered so alls good.
I live and breathe, and write, horror fiction and I am always on the look out for inspiration and ideas. I think this was a 99 pence buy for the Kindle. It's range of writers, across all horror genres, can't be bettered. I particularly liked the inclusion of more obscure stories from long forgotten writers. Itxakso has its fair share of genre staples so, something for everyone.
i did not read morw than the first story....my kindle is not responding or something....i paid the book cost and cant even find the page that lists all the stories!!
Wow, I've just bought this for 75p on Kindle thinking that there would be a few short stories to fill gaps in my collection, but there are literally hundreds. There is a good index and introduction to all of the authors. A well put together collection.
