Cyborg Vyken Dark is back on Earth after fighting for eighty years in the Procyon War against the Mesaarkans. He came to help restore order out of chaos in old Chicago USA. Every major city on Earth is in ruins. Most are now run by gangs of thugs ruled by overlords who take everything of value and prey on those who are just trying to survive. Vyken and his four brother cyborgs are all that's left of their starship crew of three hundred.
He didn't want the job, but when his old mentor Admiral Carson Gregor asked, Vyken Dark could not refuse. If he could have chosen a man to call father, it would have been Carson Gregor.
Vyken chose the name Dark because the darkness in his soul drove him to kill the enemies of the Federation with a ruthlessness that few natural humans possessed. Sometimes that darkness overwhelmed his humanity and made him weary of his life... Until he came back to Earth and found her.

Earth is a devastated dystopian planet🌍. All major cities are wrecked and there is no government, no jobs, no utilities, no electronics. No hope. Gangs roam the rubble filled streets, killing, beating, raping, robbing. The alien Mesaarkans caused the devastation, and then left. Human bred cyborgs👹🔫🔪 fought them off and now a generation or more has passed and the war is over.
Vyken👹🔫🔪, the commander of the few remaining Cyborgs, has a new job, they are gathering what decent humans are left, mostly women and children, and taking them to a farming community where their spaceship is parked.
This is a quick, uncomplicated read. The sex scenes between Vyken👹🔫🔪 and his human mate, Danya💃💋, are mostly implied and not described in detail.
Much of the dialogue, even between the humans, is stiff and stilted. It seems like something is missing from the book and I believe that is passion and emotion. It's a great idea for a book, but the execution could have been much better.
** 3.5 Stars ** Five cyborgs, sequentially numbered VKD-8463 trough VKD-8467, were awakened for a mission. VKD-8463 was the most proficient at leadership skills and eventually took on the name of Vyken Dark, referring to the darkness he felt in his soul when he killed. His first mission, which Starfire Admiral Carson Gregor sent four of them on, had been to rescue the Governor of Earth Colony Uloi. Three companies of Mesaarkans were holding the governor hostage and killing families in the city of Dojarr. They were efficient and quickly accomplished their mission.
In the city of Chicago, destroyed by aliens in a war 60 years previously, Kaylie Raines was hiding in the basement window well of an old building, trying to escape the 3 guys who stole the pigeon she shot with a slingshot and attacked her. With 3 of them, they would probably end up killing her. When they passed her hiding place, she sneaked out and was grabbed by another guy whom she recognized, James Hill, and he pulled her by the arm to a safer place, offering to share the squirrels he had for dinner. He invited her to stay with him, and assured her he would not take advantage of her. Then he taught her basic survival skills he had learned through old books he salvaged.
The Admiral wanted Vyken’s team to go to Earth and check out the situation in Chicago. That was where Vyken was “born” and there may be cyborgs not yet activated still there that needed to be freed. There was talk of restoring civilization and Vyken could be part of that. There was someone special waiting for him there who would make all the difference in his life.
I didn’t feel this story flowed smoothly as it should. It felt like it jumped around and was more like a recitation of facts sometimes than a story that would pull me in. It needed some editing as well. But sticking with it, it does make a better story as it goes on and the reader gets to know the characters. I had lots of admiration for the main characters who showed honor and courage in the difficult survival situation they were in. Even the cyborgs showed strong loyalty, especially to the Admiral whom Vyken would have chosen as his father. I liked the theme that no matter how bad things are, people can rise above that and still love.
I didn't have high expectations when I decided to start the book. But I don't know why I didn't quit, since this book was bad. With cleaning up, it has potential to be a much better read though. The repetitions in the book were unreal- probably could have pared it down roughly 60 to 80 pages, just from the repetitions that I was irritated by. There was entirely too much inner dialog, too. I really felt like I was reading a first draft or something, before a content editor or proof reading editor got a hold of the book. Things did not flow smoothly at all. The world building is sparse (could definitely have been improved on), but there's enough that a reader isn't thrown into the world wondering what's going on. The characters are very flat, and I didn't feel the "love" connection between them. I didn't feel like Vyken was "cyborg" enough, other than a few minor details (like being able to communicate with all the other cyborgs or superiors without having to pick up a communication device or speak out loud sort of thing, or the different skin coloring, or his huge size). I realize that "cyborg" in books are really iffy, since it's the author's prerogative to write them the way they do, but part of the draw for me, is the "otherness" type of behavior that a cyborg presents, a calculated non-emotional type of behavior, that makes them feel not human. I really wish I could get my time back on this one. What a disappointment.
Cyborg Awakenings by Christine Myers launches readers into a post-apocalyptic, high-stakes adventure where cybernetic warriors struggle to protect what remains of humanity.
Vyken Dark, a battle-hardened cyborg, returns to a devastated Earth after eighty years fighting the Procyon War against the Mesaarkans. Cities lie in ruins, overrun by gangs and ruthless overlords, and the remnants of society cling to survival. Tasked by his mentor, Admiral Carson Gregor, Vyken faces both external chaos and internal darkness a morally complex protagonist shaped by decades of conflict, whose soul is as haunted as his body is enhanced.
The narrative thrives on duality: Vyken’s lethal capabilities versus his lingering humanity, his duty versus desire, and his past camaraderie versus present isolation. The reunion with “her” (a personal anchor) introduces an emotional core, providing stakes beyond mere survival and warfare.
Packed with post-apocalyptic tension, brotherhood dynamics, and cybernetic intrigue, Cyborg Awakenings will appeal to readers of hard sci-fi, dystopian adventures, and action-driven, character-centered narratives.
Brilliant book which I totally enjoyed and would heartily recommend and hope that others enjoy it as well. Earth has been devastated by an alien race but at fault were greedy explorers who tried to claim another planet and murdered most of the occupants to do it. Cyborg warriors were built to aid Earth and fight the alien race but now due to another alien race peace has been brokered and now the planet Earth needs the cyborg warriors to help rebuild. After eighty years of fighting Vyken Dark and his team are ready to retire but a request from his former Commander changes his plans and he goes to Earth. Danya and her father have been fighting against the Overlords who seem to think they own people and are rescued by Vyken and his team. Mutual attraction and Vyken realises that Danya is his genetic mate. Can these two be together and overcome the obstacles they must face to be free to live and love.
This book started off fast and sort of stalled along the way. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the read..sort of. The characters seemed stiff even though there are lots of love scenes. There is action but the final conflict was abrupt and felt rushed to me. I want to believe that this book is setting the scene for later books so I couldn’t give it more than three stars. I will try the next book in the series to see if my feelings change.
This is a story about cyborgs and the earth after the war. And a woman who is trying to survive in a disastrous and dangerous world. It is suspenseful, dangerous, exciting and terrible world. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it. You just need the rest of the story to get a better picture of it.
The book was well written and kept your attention throughout the story. It's packed with adventure, drama, finding refugees to rebuild earth, passion, love, and steamy hot scenes that are not over the top with awesome characters? If you love reading about cyborg romance; this is definitely a must buy and so ready to read the next book?
Cyborgs in love and finding that love with what's left of the female population after an alien war. Good story that kept me interested. I enjoyed all the characters. The cyborgs proceed to help rebuild Earth. I would recommend. Have placed the remaining books in this series on my wish list.
Earth has been destroyed. The aliens had tried to wipe out the human race and almost succeeded. Vyken Darken and his brother cyborgs have come to Chicago to rescue the survivors from overlords and their gangs and help them rebuild Earth. I really liked it plan to read all in series.
This story is delightfully different from most sci-fi romances. The earth’s cities destroyed in a too long war ,fought by manufactured soldiers. Bringing life to death, a rebuilding of once was or at least a version as such. Characters were nicely developed. World building believable. Recommend to any sci-go nut like me ! Five outta five!
Vyken Dark was more human than cyborg..in my opinion. Danya was the light to his Dark (pun intended).
I love the protectiveness of vyken and her father, James. I knew that once James saw the truth of Vyken's love for Danya and her happiness was his goal...his blessing was inevitable.
After reading the prequel, I am so glad I continued on with this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and hope to read more of the sequels. The storyline held me throughout, with enough spice and romance to make it a good escape from our own state of war on this planet Earth. Yes I recommend this story.
This has an interesting story and isn't just about sex. Sure there's sex in the story but there's also romance. I recommend this book for anyone who likes sci-fi romance with aliens.
The book was repetitious and not well written. I love books about cyborgs but this one was so poorly written it was not enjoyable and the repeating of the storyline over and over again made it boring.
I wouldn't recommend this book unless it is just to pass the time. I like to immerse myself in my books and i couldn't in the. I know it is a cyborg book but the story was too robotic for me.
This wasnt really what i expected but i enjoyed it. It was more cerebral than i anticipated. I liked that it was told from the alien’s point of view mostly which was a refreshing change.
It was interesting to think about what complete devastation would look like. It was kind of humbling to think about all the work to rebuild. I liked the characters in this story and am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
The story wasn't too bad. It just felt like it needed something. Maybe it was the over explaining of things. Maybe that genetic match thing was a little off. I'm not sure what it was. It was just missing something. It did have a HEA.
the story was good, it needs an editor, the writing felt choppy at times, and there were several times where there was stuttering in a sentence. but over all it was a good one.
What a great start to a new series. Lived the characters, and can't wait to read more of this series. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
I really enjoyed this book. Author has great imagination and displayed that in the storyline and the characters (both hero’s and villains) The first couple Vyken and Danya have an interesting relationship. I enjoyed getting to know them. Just FYI, very steamy intimate scenes :o)
