When paranormal investigator Jack Barnes pulled up in front of New Castle Asylum, he thought he knew what he was walking into…a typical, supposedly haunted, abandoned building. Easy to debunk and move on. What was waiting for him, however, was darker and more terrifying than he had ever imagined. An attack sends him reeling… As the sun comes up, Jack returns home. Shaken. Parker, Jack’s friend, is ready to go through the evidence he collected. All goes well, until they discover they are not alone. Something has followed Jack home. Something angry. Something strong. How will Jack survive a battle with something unseen?
Damn ... This author can write! This has been one of the scariest books that I have ever read, but I am a child of the 70s/80s, and anything vaguely demonic is enough for me to clamp my hands over my eyes. (cue The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, Rosemary's Baby, Damien et.al.) This story had my heart leaping out of my chest on numerous occasions, none more so than when Jack, the main character, left his best mate Caesar, the Russian Blue kitty, behind .... in the house ...... AFTER the spooky happenings started! I'm hoping that Caesar fared better than his owner did at the conclusion of this tale. I can't wait to read more on just what this demonic entity is, and I've downloaded the next two books of this series to whet my appetite. Highly Recommended Read!!
Reading A Step Into Darkness was my first foray into the paranormal, and it certainly won't be my last, as I already have the second book sitting on my Kindle. Barb knows her stuff as a real-life paranormal investigator, and effectively uses what she knows, weaving a dark tale that will have you shivering as you read. The book is definitely an adult only read, as it contains more than a few f-bombs and a good helping of explicit sexual content. All in all, a commendable debut, worthy of 5 stars, and recommended reading.
This was a difficult book to rate. What I liked: the story itself was a cool idea and it is relatively well written. What I didn’t like: it needs editing. The use of all capital letters instead of italics was annoying. There was a lack of hyphenation and there were also typos throughout. It was distracting, but the biggest issue was just how long and drawn out the story was.
Even though there was a lot of paranormal activity, it just seemed like nothing was happening and I had to skim through many areas.
With editing as well as cutting about half the content, I think this book would be fantastic.
I loved A Step Into Darkness. I couldn’t put the book down. This book had lots of unexpected twists and turns, it was a great combination of suspense, romance and paranormal! Can’t wait for the next book!
I enjoyed this book alot. The ending was somewhat expected due to the events leading up to it in the book. I'm disappointed that the author doesn't tell us what happened to Jack's cat Caesar. His friend Parker asks about the cat but we never find out what happened to the poor kitty. I'm also left wondering what becomes of Laurel. Does she find out the truth of what happened? Why doesn't she come to Parker's defense?
This is the 1st book in the series which was a lot better than I was expecting. If you enjoy ghost's and things that to bump in the night you will enjoy this.
