Książka Doris Bachmann-Medick jest przejrzystym przeglądem porządkującym dzisiejsze pole badań nad kulturą.

Każdy kolejny zwrot akcentuje te aspekty i wymiary praktyk kulturowych, które były dotąd stłumione i marginalizowane, każdy też oferuje nowy zestaw metafor i narzędzi badawczych.
Autorka skupia uwagę na trendach rozwojowych oraz na dyskusjach wokół pojęcia kultury - popkultury, mediów i komunikacji, globalizacji. Stosuje nowe, kompleksowe metody badawcze w odniesieniu do antropologii historycznej, historii ruchów feministycznych, zmian pokoleniowych i płciowości, wreszcie tego, co nazywamy New Historicism. Książką tą Autorka inicjuje dyskurs teoretyczny (w tym metodologiczny) na wyższym poziomie abstrakcji.

A comprehensive study of contemporary research trends in cultural studies. The author skillfully demonstrates how various "cultural turns" – from the linguistic to the postcolonial and translational – shape our methods of interpreting cultural texts. The translational turn, in particular, stands out for its practical value, creating opportunities for more effective interdisciplinary communication, which helps integrate different fields of study and improve their collaboration.

At the same time, I am aware that deconstruction and postmodernism focus on dismantling metaphysical values, often perceived in this discourse as oppressive or absolutist. However, perhaps the goal is not to reject these values entirely but to redefine them – to cultivate one’s identity, which doesn’t need to rely on absolutes but rather on individual and communal meanings. This seems especially crucial in today's times of a crisis of meaning, where the fragmentation of successive cultural turns risks losing broader perspectives.

Its an essential reading for anyone engaged in cultural studies. It invites reflection on how to balance deconstruction with the construction of new values, making it a must-read for understanding the dynamics of contemporary cultural analysis.

Moderner Klassiker, der die Geschichte des diffusen "Kulturwissenschaften" genannten Felds anhand seiner unzähligen thematischen und methodischen Neuausrichtungen (genannt "turns") nachzeichnet. Könnte stellenweise einfacher geschrieben sein und zugunsten der Klarheit auf unnötige Metaphern verzichten - aber so schreiben deutsche Kulturwissenschaftler*innen nunmal, was soll ich sagen. Manchmal lässt es zuden konkrete Beispiele und Anwendungsfälle vermissen, sodass bisweilen der Eindruck entsteht, die behandelten kultur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Ansätze drehten sich nur um sich selbst, ohne jeden Bezug zur realen Welt - was wohl auch nicht ganz von der Hand zu weisen ist. Dennoch eine erhellende Lektüre.

Гарна книга для розуміння, що саме змінилося у методології гуманітарних наук за останнє століття. Звісно це побіжний огляд, згадка ключових гравців та ідей, які вони пропонують, однак для студентів цілком пасує.
Також це гарне джерело для дослідницьких семінарів, курсів для навчання критичному мисленню, філософських дисциплін, антропології, культурології тощо. І викладачам, і студентам, і аспірантам також підійде, бо часом "очевидні" речі виявляються цілком несподіваними.
