Molly is thrilled when she has been invited to the opening of the latest restaurant in town. Things are also heating up with officer Jeffrey, and for once, everything seems calm.
However, trouble is never far, and to her horror, Jeffrey’s uncle, Bo, drops dead in the middle of the restaurant.

Book 3 in the Sweet Treat Cozy Mystery series, which can be read in one to two hours! Perfect for a lunchtime read or if you want to enjoy a quick light-hearted read, with a parrot-loving amateur sleuth, set in a seaside town with quirky characters.
A good plot but a bit too obvious for me. Her business is doing well but her new special is in trouble. No matter what she does her lemon bars just fail to meet the grade. Perhaps her date with the deputy at the exclusive new restaurant will give her inspiration. A restaurant where there 6 different cuisines available from 6 different world class chefs. Even meeting his foster parents does equate to the delectable dishes in front of them. But the atmosphere is soon shattered, his foster father is lying dead on the floor and his foster mother is collapsed in a heap next to him. Now he's been relieved from investigating but she agrees to help him. Who and why as the cause turns out to be poison? Is it the prominent businessman who is cited in the press for being a racist? Is it someone with a grudge from his fostering days? As they delve deeper, she gets closer to not only him but his foster mother. Will they find the culprit and be able to prove it? Will they both survive? Will she ever get her lemon bars right? Will Whammy become an overnight hero?
This series remains in my favour so far. The third book in the Sweet Treats Mystery, in it Molly investigates the murder of Officer Jeffrey's uncle Bo. He is poisoned while Molly and Jeffrey are dining at a posh restaurant where Uncle Bo works as a sous-chef, and then was pronounced dead. Deeply affected and devastated, Jeffrey pledged to hunt the killer, and Molly offers her help and experience as an investigative journalist.
Now, here's the rub; I have always had some issues with what seems like a technique or trend or whatever you'd fancy calling it - "telling rather than showing" way of describing things. Molly, the protagonist and the owner of a sweet shop had some experience in investigative journalism under her belt and uses her skills in sleuthing. Which is totally fine with me but I don't really fancy the way it is employed in this series. I would have felt differently if her experience as a journalist was actually narrated and portrayed through some episodes that back her claim, but alas, there's hardly any. The word 'investigative journalism' is thrown around here and there as an access right that allows her almost anything and everything with no argument and that's exactly what bugs me; I would love to much more conviction and evidence.
There are also some parts where I needed to suppress my knee-jerk reaction, but it mostly came from my personal preference and given the nature of the genre I know I am nit-picking so I'll drop my argument here. The mystery is quite straightforward and clear-cut, leaving hardly any bad aftertaste. I always like this series has some nice action-packed face-offs with the culprit. And of course, there are moments for Whammy as well, and he indeed stole the show in this one!
The ending is neat and sweet. I always love how this series wraps up with a feel-good after story of how well Molly's shop is doing and what positive responses she's getting. The characters are a bit bland and flat, but I think it's a fair trade-off as short-length stories.
Overall, I enjoyed this book as much as the previous books. I am very much keen to read the next one and see what happens. 3.5 stars.
Out of over fifty cozy light reads I have read, this is one I really enjoyed. Well written with realistic characters, this book left me with a smile. Hope you enjoy as well.
Loving this seeing cozy mysteries with a bit of romance added in! Together Jeffrey and Molly are solving another case that's closer to home for one of them. Read the complete serif you'll enjoy them and not to forget Whammy and the twins!!!
I enjoyed this story of the characters adventures into the mysteries and suspense of the murder at a first date. The author has done a wonderful job of telling her story.
This book reminded me of Savannah and the friendly people there. The description of those lemon bars made me go out and buy some. Best of all were the characters and the warmth between them.
We find out more about Jeffrey's background when he and Molly go on their first date and a murder hits close to home. As a result, they start to grow closer. Whammy helps, too. I enjoy these books about good and smart people.
Definitely a step in the right direction. Much more exciting and thought provoking than the simplicity of the last two. Actually looking forward to more.
I do like the main characters. You'll have all your readers wanting some goodies to eat. The murder mystery was good. Thank you for entertaining me. Stay well.
