There were two things Rainey hated… That one of her friends was murdered. And another friend is accused of murder. Why would a man who feared water go near the Snake River? And who would kill someone that everyone seemed to like? Rainey isn’t sure, but she’s going to find out whether Detective Cade Starkey wants her to or not.
15 stars!! Rainey just can't help herself from sticking her nose in other people's business. And then has to fight her way out. Detective Cade Starkey can't get her to understand, I get it you want to help a friend find out what happened and why, but jeez louise. Asking questions and talking rumors about people who are suspects can get you in a huge pickle, great to have a dog around. I love the fact the author touched on an issue about animal shelters becoming no-kill shelters is excellent. You will enjoy this book. It is my first time reading this author and my second book in the series and on my way to the third. I like the small town themes I can get into the stories like I am right there.
I do think that it sometimes takes her a book or two in a series to find her stride. With this book, she was just starting to really settle into what I think is enjoyable about later Rainey Daye. That being said, this early in the series, I can't say that Rainey is my favorite of Suzette's common heroines.
Still, I very much enjoyed this book, and I do highly recommend Kathleen Suzette's cozy mysteries!
I feel that Rainey’s reactions to Detective Cade are WAY out of proportion to the situation! And if she likes to solve puzzles, why isn’t that shown in her everyday life? Nothing about her screams “amateur sleuth”... Only my opinion though...
I love the dynamics between the characters. Rainey now has a blue tick hound which saved her life. I got hungry while reading about blueberry tarts and double chocolate brownies. On to book 3
Better than the first book but the investigating still needs tightening. The characters are stronger as well but the main character needs to build a backbone.
