I grew up in the heart of Dublin with my parents and older brother. Being a professional eavesdropper from an early age, I always loved to write about the things I heard and would exaggerate them into proper stories! I spent my childhood devouring books and vowing some day I'd write one myself. But life had other things in mind and after spending 15 years working in a bank, I subsequently left to be at home with my four children. Having lost a lot of confidence in my own ability, it seemed my dream of writing a book was moving further and further away from me. When my youngest started school four years ago and I finally had some 'me' time, I decided to pursue that dream. After having a few short stories published, I eventually got myself an agent and very quickly had a two book deal. My first book, Any Dream Will Do, was published in November 2011 and my latest one, The Terrace, is out now, August 2012. I adore writing and feel like the luckiest person in the world to wake up every morning and live my dream.

Holly is getting ready for an extra-special Christmas. Her boyfriend, David, has proposed and the groundwork for the wedding has begun. He is a great guy, who clearly adores her, but something is missing. Why can she not get excited about the big day?
Josh's girlfriend is pregnant and they are moving into their new home before the baby arrives. She is stunningly beautiful and he would do anything to keep her happy. But small cracks are beginning to show and the house move brings up some unexpected challenges. Not least the fact that he is now across the road from Holly, who he used to date...

Who hasn't wondered what their first love is up to? The powerful connections that young adults experience can sometimes be exaggerated in our memories and rose-tinted glasses are often used. But how would you cope if you ended up seeing that special someone on a daily basis and the feelings resurfaced? Holly and Josh find themselves hiding their past romance and keeping their feelings under wrap. Holly has doubts about her impending marriage and her fiancee (and his needy mother) begin to get on her nerves. At least she has her job in a local veterinary practice to keep her sane. Josh's model girlfriend, Stephanie, is high maintenance and struggling with her pregnant status. Josh can't wait to become a dad and tried to instill some enthusiasm into the expectant mother. It's not as easy as he thought and bends over backwards to please her, despite some of her dodgy decisions. As Christmas looms, the two households struggle to build up the seasonal spirit as memories come knocking on their doors.

Maria Duffy is one of Ireland's best known writers of female fiction and this is her sixth novel. Each one is written with a gentle touch and a warm tone. In Falling Softly we meet two characters with a connected past, who are about to embark on their individual futures. Their unexpected reunion throws some serious spanners in to the works and their memories resurface. Duffy interlaces the past and the present, whilst using supporting characters to create the overall atmosphere. This is not a Christmas book, just one that happens to take place over the festive period. The writing is charming and both Josh and Holly are endearing. Their respective partners are well drawn upon, with Stephanie being a particularly nasty piece of work. David's mother is a classic, controlling mother-in-law and I think I would hide behind the sofa if I thought she was on her way over to my house. This is an enjoyable read, ideal for the holidays. It has some sparkle, some sadness and a dash of hope. Ideal for fans of Cathy Kelly and Claudia Carroll.

“Falling Softly” by Maria Duffy is a good read, not my favorite, but good. It’s a romantic story that is nice for when you’re in the mood for a gentle and simple piece of fiction. I enjoyed it, but I honestly felt like the main character, Holly, was setting her expectations with David a bit too high. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the guy. Yeah, he needed to not be so attached to “mammy”, but Holly had her head stuck a little bit too much in a fantasy. I enjoyed seeing the different point of views from both Holly and Josh. Also, while I didn’t enjoy Holly’s character too much, I absolutely adored Josh’s. He was the kind of fictional book boyfriend any romance reader could melt for. I’m glad I read it. :)

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book Via NetGalley.

Falling Softly is the sixth book from Maria Duffy and has such a gorgeous wintry cover that teases us with a most romantic story that waits to be discovered between the covers. I read this book in an afternoon, so easy was it to slip into the lives of our main characters Holly Russo and Josh O’Toole. It’s a nice easy read, like any book in the women’s chick lit genre. I do hate using that word, and know it makes people annoyed to see that term used, but that’s what this book is and as this genre has been popular for so many years and we know what to expect from it that’s exactly what I got from this book - a good will they won’t they story.

The story is told in two different viewpoints that of Holly and Josh, and throughout the book at the beginning of various chapters we are taken back in time to understand the relationship between said characters although we don’t discover who we are reading about until several chapters in. These glimpses are very brief but they were a great addition to the story as we gain a deeper understanding as to how they have reached the point they are at today. The story flowed along at a nice pace providing us with characters, some of which you loved to hate and others whom you could see their desperation and torment so much so that you fervently wished that by the end everything would resolve itself. The book had the fairly usual outcome but it still was an enjoyable read just to see how everything panned out.

Holly Russo should be the happiest girl in the world, she has reached that point that most women dream of since they were young girls. Her boyfriend David has just proposed, even if it wasn’t the most romantic of proposals, her long held aspiration has just come true and she should be eagerly planning the best day of her life. David works in the bank so there are no money worries and he can provide anything she wishes for. The problem is there are tiny seeds of doubt planted firmly in the back of her mind which are only beginning to grow all the more. It doesn’t help in the slightest that Mammy Wood is not the mother-in-law you would really want with her firm beliefs regarding the planning and organisation of the wedding. She wants control and to have things her way leaving little opportunity for Holly to stand firm and say what she wants to happen on her big day. A winter wedding with a castle and snow falling has been her vision, needless to say Mammy Wood’s ideas are the polar opposite.

Right from the beginning I really did want Holly to stand up for herself far more, she seemed to just go along with what her mother-in-law to be wanted in order to keep the peace and not upset the apple cart. Surely if she was marrying the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with she could be honest and open and that’s where the doubt begins to creep in and make itself known. Holly works as a receptionist in the local vets and her friend Milly who works there provided a shoulder to cry on and at times the strong words that Holly needed to hear. But it could possibly be something in the past that is niggling away at Holly preventing her from embracing the future wholeheartedly.

Josh O’Toole is a primary school teacher - just as I am so I completely identified with him but I did find it troubling that he hadn’t enough money and at one point he began to look for a second job. Josh has been with his partner Stephanie for some years and now they are expecting a baby. With this comes great responsibility but also added pressure on Josh, all completely coming from Stephanie’s side. They move to a bigger house and by chance it is the same street that Holly is living on. As we read on we discover Holly and Josh are now more than just neighbours as they had known each other in the past. Old feelings, emotions and situations come rushing back to the surface and for the majority of the book both were completely torn.

Josh was that character I really enjoyed the most in this book, there was real character development and I felt for the situation he found himself in. He was totally torn in two between his heart and mind, between his duties and what he felt deep down was the right thing to do to give him peace of mind and long term happiness. Seeing Holly once again after so many years and the history they shared just made him start to think what have I gotten myself into when it could have been so different and I suppose Holly felt the same way. For the first time in a long time it was the male character in a book that I preferred and normally I am firmly rooting for the female and pay little attention to the male. Maria Duffy gave Josh a voice and I was glad to see that happen as the two sides of the story were very firmly presented and the reader was given their own opportunities to view both sides and make up their own minds as to what should happen.

Normally it’s the partners who are hard done by in a book like this and I usually feel very little sympathy for them but in this case David was a likeable character, apart from his Mammy, but he really couldn’t control her. I felt it was more Holly’s fault that she was having doubts and the reappearance of Josh at a crucial time of her life didn’t help things either. I felt sorry for David in a way as he wasn’t fussy or overpowering, OK he may have been a little bit boring and maybe too normal for Holly’s tastes but in my mind there is nothing wrong with that. He was steadfast, reliable, safe, secure and sensible and up until this point of time that would have served Holly very well but Josh has reawakened a past which at times was just beautiful and the happiest period of her life yet at others there was pain and heartache which still lingers on for her now, even if the positives are now trying to shove the negatives out of the way. As for Stephanie I can’t say the same, I really didn’t like her right from the beginning and never felt the love she supposedly had for Josh. For a woman that is pregnant she didn’t act in the most responsible way, still indulging in a party lifestyle, one which Josh couldn’t hope to keep financing. I had my suspicions about her which grew and grew the further we progressed into the book and I detested her all the more.

This story provided food for thought as to what the reader would do if placed in the same situation and it made me think if I was faced with it what choice would I make? Throughout we were with Josh and Holly as they battled their emotions and I liked how it all played out. I would normally be very firm in my beliefs in relation to what choices faced Holly and Josh but they were pushed aside as I did want them to reconnect and for both of them to find the happiness they deserved. It was enjoyable to keep reading to the end to see did my hopes come to fruition. I enjoyed how a few twists were thrown in from a character who up until that point hadn’t had much of a role to play.

I thought Maria summed up the feeling of love and romance perfectly by this statement. ’When your heart leaps every time he walks into the room. When you can just be together, without words, and feel content. When your first thought in the morning is about him and he’s your last thought before you go to sleep at night. When you feel electricity pulse through you when he brushes against you. And when you feel like nothing else in the world matters when you make love to each other’. I hoped by the end that Holly could feel this way and a resolution could be found for happiness to shine through. I did enjoy Falling Softly I didn’t notice the hours passing while reading and look forward to reading lots more from Maria in the future.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest/unbiased opinion.

I’m sorry but I did NOT like this story. It started out slow and only dragged on. There was not enough showing, too much telling. And the flashbacks didn’t really give us a look into how happy they were so the chemistry was non existent for me.

It showed how unhappy they were in their current relationships but I failed to see how them getting together was better. It had been too long and they didn’t know each other anymore. We never really knew them in love so when they ‘fell’ it didn’t seem genuine at all.

The end was too fast, not flowing cohesively like the slow beginning and middle. The transition of the story seemed a bit choppy throughout honestly. I had to keep stopping because the scenes kept changing abruptly and I was like, “Wait, how did we get here?”

Honestly, I almost DNF’d this book but wanted to give it another chance. I regret it. I should have gone with my gut.

Holly is preparing for Christmas and her boyfriend Dave had just proposed to her, she has a job she loves and life is good. Or is it ? Josh and his partner Stephanie are expecting a baby and move into a new house before the baby is born. Are they happy or is there an underlying problem in there relationship ?

This was a brilliant book and not just your average soppy love story. There were good, well developed characters. It kept my interest from the beginning and I would highly recommend this book.

Holly has a great job as a vet and has just got engaged to her long term boyfriend David, Christmas her favourite time of the year is coming so why is she not feeling more excited - surely she has everything that she wants - so why is she not feeling that fizzing feeling that she felt when she was with her first boyfriend

Josh and Steph are expecting their first baby when they move in across the road from Holly - Josh loves his teaching job so why is he not more excited about life and why is Steph acting suspiciously

A lovely easy reading book - great characters and although predictable a very enjoyable read

This story had me seriously worried for quite a while. Even at the start things weren't smooth sailing for any of the couples and things kept getting more and more worse as things progressed. It was either sheer stubborness or they were stupid characters and I'm not entirely sure what category to label them. Overall I did like the story, it did take quite some time to warm up to Josh and Holly but eventually I did sort of like them. The story wasn't quite what I was expecting but it still mostly entertained when I finally sat down and started to read it properly instead of reading a chapter or two and then doing something else for 7-9 hours and then going back to the book.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Maria Duffyfor giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

If you love chicklit and romance stories this book is defiantly for you a must buy must read for all who love these genres.

Holly Russo is a veterinarian who loves Christmas. It is Hollys favourite time of the year and she is finally engaged to her long term boyfriend. Ok so the question 'Will you marry me?' Didn't come as a full blown proposal it wasn't romantic, David didn't go down on one knee, he didn't even have ring but there's more to love then romance right?

Holly should be feel ecstatic, over the moon and loved up she knows David will give her. Good life he will take care of her and love her. But is that all she wants out of life?

Holly has doubts and the proposal has only made things worse bringing to her mind thoughts of her first love, the one who made her giddy, have butterflies and loose her breathe every time she saw him. It's natural. To have doubts right? Natural to think about your first love? After all they say the first love is the one you never forget right? But is Holly really making the right decision?

Things only get more complicated when Josh and Steph move to the neighbourhood. Steph is pregnant but Josh is finding himself questioning their relationship and getting suspicious of Stephanie behaviour and Steph just wants Josh to propose. Can they work things out? Is there a happy ending for any of the couples?

I liked the characters in this book all apart from Davids mum who is an interfering old lady who David needs to put in her place.

I found the book good, it moved at a good place. The only thing that id say is that I found the twists obvious and I knew what was going to happy before it happened. That said though I am finding this with most romance stories at the moment and that doesn't make it a bad book. I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable and I found myself emerged in the story line. I think this book is great for people who love chicklit and romance stories.

Happy reading everyone

Holy is a vet and she just got engaged to David who is a banker. But Holly doesn’t feel all excited that she thinks a newly engaged woman should feel. Holly already had some doubts, Holly’s favorite time of year was Christmas which was seven weeks away. Josh and Steph just moved across the street from Holly and David. Josh and Steph are expecting their first child. Josh is a teacher. Holly wants a winter wedding with a castle and snow falling but her future mother in law already seems to be planning Holly’s wedding without allowing to have any say about he wedding, her big day. Holly and Josh had known each other in the past, Josh had been Holly’s first love which reminded her times that were beautiful and was the happiest time of her life. Josh thinks Steph is acting suspicious and Steph just wants Josh to purpose. Steph wasn’t acting very responsible for being pregnant yet she is still following her partying way that Josh won’t be able to afford.
I did really like this story. T made me think back to my first love and how I had soe very happy times then and how special I felt our feelings and relationship was. This story grabs you right from the beginning and doesn’t let you go. I like Holly and Josh a lot but just didn’t really like Steph.
I thought this story was endearing And brought me back to thoughts of my first love and I hadn’t thought about him in a long time. This was a fast easy read. I also liked how the book did go back and give you brief insights to what we find out later were about Holly and Josh. I loved the plot, the characters, and the ins and outs of this story I recommend.

Lovely feel good novel. Loved the characters of Holly and Josh. Hoped early on they would get back together. Felt so sorry for poor David, he seemed like such a lovely, set in his ways guy. But theres always someone gets there heart broken in a love triangle. Wasn't keen on Stephanie, so was good to see her get her just deserts.

Great story. Got my interest from the beginning, and didnt want to put the book down.

Would highly recommend this book

Holly lives with sensible David. She loves him even though he isn't exciting but hey he's steady with a good job....Isn't that what life should be about?

Josh lives with his model girlfriend Steph who is pregnant with his child. Ok, so he doesn't always know what she wants but isn't that what makes life exciting?

Holly and Josh used to be a couple, they meet again when Josh and Steph move into the house opposite. The story moves between their old relationship and their new. They still love each other and have unresolved issues. A nice story with great characters.

Is it ever too late to find your happily ever after? Both Josh & Holly think they have....but not with each other. Sometimes the past gets in the way of the future. A wonderful story of love lost and love found with characters you can’t help but love.. A great read for fans of chick lit and Christmas romances.
