In a small town in eastern Kentucky, jobs are scarce and illegal drugs flow freely. So when reports surface of missing people, it’s chalked up to the growing opioid epidemic. It isn’t until a young couple happens upon a gruesome discovery that the chief of police realizes his town is facing a much darker and more deadly problem.
He calls on the FBI for help and the case is referred to the elite BAU team at Quantico where Agent Kate Reid has recently joined. The unit is led by Senior Unit Agent Nick Scarborough.
The team heads to the small town where the bodies continue to turn up, all with similar signatures. And it’s Kate’s new boss, Agent Noah Quinn, who believes it could be the work of drug cartels. But Kate isn’t so sure.
While the team investigates, Kate learns more about her new colleagues and grows closer to them. And when the horrific deaths reveal a stark truth about the small town, they must convince the chief that nothing is as it seems.
This was a good tale but it seemed that much of the book was spent on “explaining” rather than action. Nevertheless, it was a passable story. Everyone is chasing the opioids these days and it’s certainly a justified topic. As with all over publicized issues in the daily news, we grow jaded and tired of hearing about it.
Kate and the team are called into investigate some remains found in an abandoned mineshaft. While they are there more bodys are found and they are still no closer to finding the killer. A tense and all to probable story.
I just love Kate Reid and Nick Scarborough! These two are part of the BAU Department for the FBI. They have been called to assist Chief Tate of a small town called Crown Point because the young people are dying by overdoses. However, three bodies have been found and this is totally not the norm for this small poverty stricken town. Why is this happening? What is the motive? It seems as if the bodies keep piling up and they die from an overdose. There is a very dangerous chemical that has been added to the OxyContin pills. The town is filled with drugs and it was mentioned that there was a possibility of cartels trying to take over the town. The local law enforcement and the FBI can’t seem to find who is killing these young people and why. What is the common denominator? The plot and character development were intriguing and kept the reader on the edge of their seat. The ending was definitely not what I had imagined. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one. I gave this a 4 stars because the proofreader left some areas where words were left out and the reader had to reread the sentence causing an interruption in the flow of the story.
Standard formula. Genius FBI agent fighting crime , her past , colleagues and a new team plus a love interest. Plot moved along well. Wasn’t hard to see the direction of the plot. The identity of the killer was pretty obvious but maybe the author chose that device. The chase through a dark area around a mine didn’t seem logical based on true events of planning and executing a search. Many characters with some development others with none. Was a quick read although Kate Reid is becoming tiresome with her past and current baggage.

A book jacket might call Deadly Reckoning "a rip roaring read." The plot does move right along, touching on issues of the day, with some unexpected twists and turns, and enough foreshadowing that the reader does not feel hoodwinked by the ending.
The book is flawed by errors that should have been corrected during editing, including an apparent "placeholder word" used repeatedly that did not appear in any of my dictionaries. Admittedly this book is part of a series, but it irritating to a reader unfamiliar with books one through seven by the frequent reference to important, but undefined incidents in the past. Additionally, there are a host of nearly indistinguishable FBI agents who are hurried off on various tasks. I couldn't keep track of the players without a scorecard and it didn't seem quite worth the effort to find a 3x5 card to take notes. Long time readers of Ms. Mahle's books probably enjoy the continuation of the series and the growth of the character.
I have been reading Kate Reid since she was with the WFO. I truly love her character and usually love these books. I don’t know if it was because She was with a new Unit in the BAU, and other than Nick, I was not use to the new characters. If I had to say what felt off it was the new unit, and I do not like Quinn. However, the book had a town with a drug epidemic and people were dropping like flies. Some were overdoses, and some were murders, not only murders but bludgeon to death murders. The local cops seems overwhelmed when they callin the local FBI, who then calls the BAU. Kate was hesitant in her role in this new unit and not as kick butt as we usually see, but overall the book was well written with a great storyline.
DEADLY RECKONING by Robin Mahle Pain, revenge, illegal drugs, so many young kids, he took his anger out on them. To justify what happened to their loved one. Kate is new to the team, after this case she is accepted. She has proven herself, and wants to be the best she can. She still has the issue with Quinn, to let her walls down. A powerful plot of what revenge can do, and the damage of drugs. Once again Robin has given us a story that one doesn’t want to put down, the characters, and the effect on this small town seem so real, and the damage that was done. Given ARC for my voluntary review and y honest opinion.
Kate Reid is the newbie on the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. It's a little rough at first, but along with a new case, she and the rest of the unit become closer. They're call in by the sheriff of a small town with several disappearances when the bodies are found. There's lots of drugs in town, but one that will eventually kill you if someone else doesn't get to you first. The attitudes and interactions of the characters are true to life and the plot is fantastic. I really enjoyed reading Deadly Reckoning and highly recommend it.
Another Kate Reid masterpiece. Now Kate is a full agent and shadowing Quinn in the BAU unit in Quantico. They are called to a small town by the local chief of police to help solve a drug murder case that they feel they cant handle on their own. It's the first real chance that " The Team " led by her boyfriend Nick, have worked in the field. They finally gel to become an effective unit and the adrenaline racks up as the investigation unfolds. Brilliantly written once again by Robin.
This story was good. A story right out of the papers today, real life. Addicts getting drugs that are poisoned with other chemicals. Kate Reid is the main character and law enforcement female, in a lead role. Great for lovers of suspense. I did read this as an advance reader. It in no way affected my opinions.
I would've liked it a bit better if it hadn't come right after the book that also dealt with a dirty cop. I understand that dirty is different than killer, but I still felt it was too similar. I'm worried about Noah Quinn, wondering if he will be another male character falling in love or obsessed with Kate. But, Kate seems to know something is off she & Nick seem solid :)

Kate Reid is a compelling character, I love to read about strong , resourceful invincible women . I feel that her relationship with Nick is a distraction that adds little to the story. The relationships between team members has always been more interesting. I wish those relationships would be developed and her relationship with Nick take the back seat.
I really enjoy the Kate Reid series. She and her team are sent to a small town overcome by drugs and now murders. There are several twists inside the story. Towards the middle I got the feel for who the murderer was. The end seemed to drag somewhat but it didn't take away from the story. It was entertaining and heartfelt, kids on drugs is always a very sad thing.
Kate Reid is on a case that brings the reader to diverse areas in the policing world. I only gave this a 4 star as I felt the ending very weak. There wasn’t enough details as I would have liked in bringing this book to a proper closure. Other than this I am interested in reading more from this author.
The author has a great command of the English language and expresses the emotion and excitement of each scene with understanding and details that take you right into the picture. This was a story that was hard to put down until the end. Great job would recommend to any one that likes mystery stories with action.
I truly am hooked on this series. I love everything about it. The drama and mystery are always entertaining and the characters are so full of depth and mystery, it never gets old!
Love this series. Well formed characters and griping story lines. Robin Mahle is one of my favorite author's. Highly recommend all her books and series.
I enjoyed this next book, #8, in this series, very much. There was thrills, suspense and lots of mystery and I finished it in one sitting. Recommend this book and all of this series to people who love lots of suspense, mystery and a great whodunit. Gave a 5 star rating, once again, to this book and the series so far. Ready to read book 9 next.
This book was a good quick read. The story was ok, the characters mildly interesting, but there were no surprises, and a whodunnit where you knew the answer long before the end, was a big letdown. If you want an easy fast read, this might be for you. Not bad, but far from great.
Oxy deaths in a devastated small town trigger FBI profiler Reid to join her new team in fighting an unknown killer. Youths in the town are overdosing and then murdered. The trail leads to abandoned mines and unlikely suspects.
I enjoyed reading this book. I definitely did not figure out who the murderer was in this book until it became evident near the end. I love it when it keeps me guessing! I can’t wait to start the next book!
It's a small town but young people are dying of overdose and being brutally beaten. The local law, BAU, DEA and FBI are all on the case but it's going nowhere. There seem to be more questions than answers. As the case wraps up the unthinkable comes to light.
Love this series but you have to read them in order to understand the characters and their interactions. Of the first 8 books, this was my least favorite but still deserved 4 stars!! On to number 9!
This book kept you on your toes until the end. What a twist as to who the killer was. Loved the main characters and their romantic relationship. Would definitely read more with Kate Reid series.
Somehow I stumbled upon Robin Mahle books. And I’m so glad that I did. This is book it and I have found each and everyone of the previous seven books to be outstanding writing. I would totally recommend this book series.
This was an intense, complex, and suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very end. There were many unexpected twists, some you won't see coming. I would recommend this book, series, and author.
Extremely well written story with interesting characters who I enjoyed learning about. It took me quite awhile to figure out who the bad guys were which I liked.
