My name is Theoden, this is the story of my life. Apparently, there has been a huge demand for me to tell it. Normally, I do what I want, unless the command comes from my Sire, Ara. But, revealing the tale about how I became the powerful vampire Prince of the City is something I think I will enjoy telling. You'll see my first mission for the church, my first kill, the life-changing moment when I lost my virginity, and how I chose my first son, all of the things that mean something to me, that made me the vampire I am. So, sit back, and give me all of your attention, as I want your eyes on me. Now, let's begin.
Prepare to be entertained to new heights as Theoden delivers you a unique tale of his life from childhood to the vampire Master you know him to be.
Warning: This is a prequel to the highly erotic, extremely dark and twisted New Haven Series and the spin-off, Odin Chronicles. I can't stress enough how strong the sexual, violent, and adult content is in this book. It will steam up your glasses, and melt your contact lenses. The temperature in the room will rise to unbearable degrees. Pearls will be clutched and you may utter the words: "Oh my God" several times while reading. You have been warned. For mature readers only.

What I am going to say now, I already heard from a few GR friends in the past.
And every damn time, I was like
There is no such thing! *gasps* Well, this is my moment. This is that moment I never saw coming but here I go, ... wait! *takes a deep breath* I can't believe I am saying this *whispering* but there is too much sex. There, I said it. I know I should cut 'em some slack after all they were not humans, but ... I really don't feel like doing this. They didn’t get attached to each other. There was no romance. They were constantly horny, and anyone would have done the job. Don’t take me wrong I am all for the smex but it needs to come with something to diminish and soften the constant fuckfest they lived on. I stopped at 68% and I am aware that I might be missing out on what is coming, but so far, I see no light at the end of this tunnel. I don’t think this is going to change considering these creatures are like hundred and thousands of years old and have always lived like that, in promiscuity. It’s very unlikely that the author would pair them up with a soul mate at any point. Right? Wrong? Therefore, throwing in the towel.
I'm surprised I liked this one was much as I did, considering the lack of romance. Plus I don't read a ton of paranormal....and we got the whole gamut here - vampires, werewolves and dragons!
But I found this one quite entertaining and it was certainly hot. And dirty. And kinky.
I haven't read any of the other serials, and I didn't feel lost. I may even go back and try some of those at some point as well.
I am really positively surprised. This book turned out to be much better than I expected. I had read fragments of some of the later books in this series, so I generally knew what to expect. A huge amount of violence and more than perverse sex. What I didn't expect at all was a pretty good story. And that there will actually be so much of this plot. This is a very pleasant surprise.
I haven't read so much from the other books that I can form an opinion on Theoden. That's why he was a whole new character to me. And so were the other characters in this book. But I find him quite an interesting hero. Although I must admit that not all of his reactions are understandable to me from a psychological point of view. His great love for Ara may stem from the fact that he grew up without parents and without love, but nevertheless the speed with which this feeling is born in him is a bit strange. But this is nothing that would bother me somehow.
This is the story of Theoden. From his early childhood spent in the monastery to the present days and what I guess is in the next books in this series. I usually don't like books in which we are following the main character since his childhood and watching his development, but here it didn't bother me that much. Maybe because a lot is happening. I will repeat it again, the plot is definitely the strong point of this book.
Of course, those who count on a whole bunch of kinky sex will not be disappointed either. There is a lot of it here and as far as I can tell it seems to me that it corresponds to what we will find in other books in this series. If that's what you are looking for in this story, then it’s here for sure.
I don't like BDSM and generally avoid it in my reads. That's why one of the things that surprised me the most is that I want to read the next books in this series. This time whole, not only in fragments. Seriously, I add them to my TBR pile. And this is really something. I just wonder if I like them, because maybe Theoden, whom I quite like in this book, is presented there as a bloodthirsty monster. We'll see, anyway, I'm going to give this series a chance.
3.5 stars One book that spans over 1000 years of a character’s life in one sitting is always going to be a big endeavour. And honestly, the first 2/3 of this was so good. Dark, dirty and delicious.
We see Theoden as a human, sheltered by the church and trained as their greatest warrior until he gets “embraced” by the vampire king Ara and begins his life anew.
The world building here was also pretty great. The vampire heirarchy and history of how they came to be was rich and intriguing. The violence, torture and lessons Theoden goes through and in return does to others is graphic, stomach churning and, at times, makes you want to clench your butt-hole. But is still totally engrossing.
However, this is extremely “sex heavy”. I loved it to begin with. It was fierce, hot and dirty. And had many layers to it in reference to a vampire/dragons energy and life force. But it did get repetitive. Because whilst there is familial love, attraction and devotion in spades, there is no romantic love. So the sex is just sex, which gets old after a while.
But where I felt let down was the final third. I wanted more story. Because the book goes from showing, to nearly all telling and “wrapping up” the final centuries of Theoden’s life. Almost like dot points or ticking items off a list. This is where it went down hill for me. And took me several days to finish.
Overall this was a good look into Theoden’s backstory and I’m looking forward to reading the New Haven series as it continues from here.
Great prequel to "A Haven Series." Knowing Theoden's story more in depth makes everything I previous read fall right into place. The way he picked his sons, how merciless he became over the centuries and how his relationship with Tylendel developed over time.
Great story, highly recommend for those who have read all the others in this incredible series.
Brilliant exploration of what makes the greatest vampire tick and how he was turned by Ara centuries ago.
Theoden is Nicholas Bella at his kinky best, full of gorgeous erotic exploration of the power of sexual desire and the violence which comes from being all powerful in a world which doesn't know the dangers living within it.
I loved how from the very start there was something different about the young Italian child who was being harshly brought up in a priory and subjected to an austere and joyless life while others around him are of the forbidden fruit.
His warrior talents were fully expressed once he was turned and the rebellious journey he had to go through before he became accepting of his fate mirrors a similar one his child Noel goes through in the later books in the New Haven series - starting with Chained in Darkness again.
Reading this gives an insight into why Theoden is as ruthless and powerful as he is and gave me a hankering to read all the other books again!

Grab your tissues. The very first page of this book made me want to cry. So heartbreaking. I just wanted to hold him and give him what he wanted. He was only five years old. Follow Théoden through his journeys and adventures. Learn about his Sire, King Ara. I have learned so much about him. He is a magnificent man, ok, Vampire. You will learn how Ara picked his sons and the relationships of Théoden and his brothers. Learn how Théoden found his sons. There's a little history on each one. Some are kind of funny. There is plenty of action too. You'll laugh, cry and be in awe while reading this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and sucked me in. Théoden's story is outstanding and will blow your mind. This story is epic. If you hated Théoden before, you'll love him now. If you loved him before. You'll love and respect him even more. If you are following New Haven and Odin Chronicles, then you HAVE to read "Théoden." You will get a much better understanding of who he is and why he has done the things he's done. Nicholas Bella, you are a genius. You've done it again. Amazingly brilliant.
There are only a couple of authors I go to when I want something smutty. I have to be in the right mood for a Nicholas Bella book since I usually like more romance in my romance books, so I'm glad I waited to read this one when I was ready for it.
This started out really interesting but got really, really rushed at the end and all the dirty sex these are known for was very much not to be found in this book.
So very hot. But to see Theoden before he was the bad ass of today was fantastic. This was so good, drool worthy. Lots of paranormal action and lots of hot sex between just about everybody. Love how this story blended in after reading all the other books of this series first. It is nasty and gritty and a whole lotta fun. Loved it. Thanks to Nicholas Bella for an awesome series. Gimme some more.
Absolutely loved it!!!! Nicholas Bella is such an amazing author and he did a spectacular job with Theoden’s story. I already loved the vampire, but now I love him even more!!!! I can’t wait for more!!!
When you're smiling and squirming at the opening credit, you know you're in a hell of a ride.
That voice, hmm, I can't get over it, it is so hot! And narrating my ultimate favorite vampire's book? Holy hell, I'm surprised I'm not a puddle on the floor. It was so hot!
"I couln't believe how drastically my life had changed. I went from being a virgin to having sex with multiple men, and in orgies, no less."
I love this book so much, Theoden's story is really good. I love his journey, he had an interesting life and he went through so much. So good to see him in those kind of situation when he was just a young thing. Ara and Tylendel, oh god, those two with Theoden! Love them. Tylendel and Theoden's relationship is still one of my favorite, and I love how Ara handled everything.
"I was looking forward to having sex with Tylendel again. He was the first man to ever enter me, and the memory of his cock inside of my was still fresh in my mind."
"I didn't think anything could break me, but I had been wrong. Ara broke me."
Theoden with Nolan was hot too. Some hate fucking but enjoying the hell out of it. When Nolan rimmed Theoden, oh god.
Theoden went through everything just the same as when he put his boys through those things. Theoden is the strongest and the most badass motherfucker out there, and I fight everyone who says otherwise.
Loved listening to the audiobook and you sure as hell I will re-listen to it many times in the future. That voice with this book - holy hell. Pearls clutching indeed. And don't get me started on the Marco/Theoden fucking. WOW.
This was a very interesting concept. Vampires fascinate me, and I very much enjoyed the exploration of vampire lore, and the themes of denial and indulgence, guiding and shaping one’s life and those of others. I also appreciated that various forms and expressions of love were explored, for all that this is not a romance. They’re explored from an outsider’s perspective, given that Theoden had no experience of love (not even parental) when the story begins, and it’s clear he desparately craved love and recognition of being a person.
It felt like a story of it’s own for about 75%, but then it became very ‘tell’ ish and covered way too much ground in not enough pages, and not enough detail. Perhaps these are covered in the series this is a prequel to?
The other observation I’ll make, is that there was a stunning amount of sex. Like, A Lot, a lot. My eyebrows took up residence next to my hairline for much of this book. The sex tapers off after about 75% or 80% in the race to the end though.
I did not love it, but I’m glad I read it. I may read the series this is part of next.
I was seriously looking forward to reading this gem and although through circumstances in life I'm a little late to the party on reading this it was well worth the wait. Theoden Sura the death merchant, Prince of the city, devoted son of king Ara and Father and grandfather to all his children. This is the Theoden we know of since I started reading the new haven series where I was thrust into the land of sinfully deadly vampires, dragons and werewolves and where only the fittest and cleverest survive. Theoden in these books is the epitome of cruel and hell is paved with good intentions sort of attitude where he rules absolute over his brood and for the advancement of his king and sire Ara. We knew one facet of his personality from these books but here in his own book we get to explore how Theodosius, ward of the Catholic church grows from a harsh upbringing with little love, to warrior, to beloved son of Ara who he was tasked with killing and to be initiated to his birth right and become the Theoden we know. I could really emphasized with young Theoden at the beginning of the book when he's isolated and not allowed to play with the others it was quite heart breaking to read. I liked as the book went on we found out more about his relationship with Ara and of course the rascal that is Tylandel. I loved seeing Theodens journey from warrior for the church to having the love and family he finally found even if it is slightly unconventional. This book journeys through Theodens life from childhood to coming into the fold of vampires, finding his son's till we reach where it all began with Noels book. I battled eye strain and a headache to get through this book I was so engrossed into this story that I just didn't want to put it down. The author has a way of really sucking you into the story and obviously mixes good storytelling with the added steaminess this author is known for for a well blended balance. I liked the little aspects of history that was subtlety integrated into this book and humour though of the slightly gutter side which made me chuckle. He was gasping, his mouth covered in blood, but he was licking his lips now. “My god!” he panted. “I live!” “And now you sh##,” Titus said, then ordered the carriage driver to stop. There were two minor things that I would of liked to have found out but then again I have been told many times before that I want to know the ins and outs of a ducks a##😀 Who was the mole at the church? And where did the dragon venom come from that was used to tip the enemy vampires arrows when it's notoriously hard to come by, I did have suspicions that it might of been a previous character that Theoden had upset but no more was said on it. But all said and done I loved this book and the past history of what brought a mistreated ward of the church to the confident master we know as Theoden in the present day. I would highly recommend people read this book but starting with the new haven series first.
I waited this book a long time. I always have had a love/hate relationship with Theoden in New Haven and The Odin Chronicle. So I had a lot of expectations for this book, and this complex character. I really loved this book, and Theoden's journey. He broke my heart (something that I would have NEVER think possible), he pissed me off too. It was aboslutely interesting and captivating to read how Theodosius became Theoden, THE Theoden, but most of all, it help me to understand this character better. Well Done Nicholas Bella, because, now, I can say, that I love Theoden.... It would have take 4 seasons of New Haven , the first 2 episode of the Odin Chronicle and finally this book, for me to love him. Fellow readers go ahead, Read this book and keep going with New Haven and The Odin Chronicle, it's fantastic journey.
Nicholas Bella has gone above and beyond with this one! Theodon's story is heartbreakingly beautiful. As much as some of us love him, hate him or love to hate him, his story explains why he is who he is today. The lonely young boy who couldn't understand why he was so different. The young man the Church trained into warrior. The man the vampire King Ara freed from humanity and the lies. Lastly, the Vampire that Theodon became. If you've read any of the other books in series then this is a Must Read. If this will be your first book then you're in for treat because there is a series of books for you to sink your teeth into after this.
★★★★☆ ~ 4 Stars This is Theoden's story - a prequel to the New Haven series - Series 1. Theoden was always special - he was brought up in the church to be a vampire hunter. However, the church was using him for their purposes and kept him in the dark until the night he was captured for Ara, the vampire king.
Theoden's life was forever changed and instead of hunting for the church, the tables were turned. As with all this author's books, sex (a lot of sex) is had by all in different configurations. Theoden builds his own family so you get the backstory of Bruce, Marco, Michael and Donovan in case you've read Chained in Darkness first.
Good addition to the series. I still like the vamps better than the wolves.
This book could have been twice as long and I would have devoured every word of it. I loved learning more about Theoden's early years, I loved hating Nolan, I loved seeing Tylendel ... basically I loved it all.
If you've read Nicholas Bella before, you know what you're in for and this doesn't disappoint story-wise or sex-wise. If you haven't, this is a great introduction and can be read first as the prequel it is.
I will say the book felt *a little* rushed at the end but it makes sense for everyone who has already read New Haven. And to be honest, I could have done with more Tylendel to *really* see their special connection grow. But overall it was great.
Nicholas Bella outdid himself in telling his story and literally bringing him to life. I was crying the very first paragraph.. if you haven't read the New Haven series, you can start here and just continue into the series.. I absolutely love all the characters and this book did not disappoint... it truly ranks in my Top 10 favorite reads of all time.. thank you Nicholas Bella.. 😘😘😘😘😍😍😍😍😍
This was an in depth look into what made Theoden who he is in The New Haven Chronicles and Odin Chronicles. I love the smutty details and introduced us to Theoden's relationships early on. It is a must read!
Wow talk about living and breathing a story. This is my first book by Nicholas Bella. It blew me away. Normally I read romance book in lots of genres except historical. Whilst I admit this is not in the slightest in the “romance” genre, perhaps reading The New Haven series completely there will be some romance. Tbh I didn’t miss the romantic aspect. Which surprises the hell out of me. The historical references were enticingly written and I did not skip any chapters. I plan to read all of this series, maybe one after the other. I was quite surprised the warnings of depravity never seemed to live up to their mention. Whether that shows I am less sensitive to such literature or I am accepting and expecting such behaviour. Perhaps the storyline gets heavier and more explicit, I will have to wait and see. Vampires have always been depicted as low degenerate supernatural beings and that is what I expect, until romance writers gave us bad boy vamps, werewolves and dragons who could be redeemed. I look forward to reading more from Nicholas. Perhaps though, if any romance doesn’t appear I will have to read the odd romantic novel in between to take a break and get my warm and fuzzy feeling quota.
This book is fantastic! It's gritty, its raw and its slightly disturbing but for people that have previously read the rest of this series you'll know exactly what to expect and I absolutely loved it. For me as well as a lot of other readers, I was always intregued by Theoden and how he came to be the person and powerful Vampire/Dragon leader that he is.
This book is to be read as a prequal to the rest of the series so if you are new to these books you can star with this one or like us long standing readers of this author you can read it after the others and it still makes sense.
Theoden's story was exactly what I wanted it to be. It gives you a full view of his life up until the start of "New Haven: Chained in Darkness" where his story continues. It starts with him as a young boy being trained by the Church to become a powerful warrior with the goal of slaying the "Blood Drinkers". Through this story we see a complete change to his character from the the young, naive, brainwashed young boy/man to one of the most powerful vampire Lord's. It is far from an easy transition and he is punished severely until he learns his place. Being born half human, half dragon then being embraced to become half Vampire ensures that Theoden and later his sired children are all extremely powerful.
As always with this series it is packed full of dirty hot sex, so if you aren't in to things that are outside of normal then this book isn't for you. If you are looking for something different and that may very well push you out of your comfort zone, you've found it!
Loved seeing all of Theoden's sired son's and how he came about finding them. As they are such a huge part in the rest of this series it was interesting to see just how they took the change of life and how these men began their journeys.
