It Won't Stay Light Forever

Rate this book
A wealthy old gentleman who cannot speak and a cabbie who drives him around every week share an experience that leaves the shocked cabbie with no explanation. A little boy's innocent gesture sets in motion a Sunday morning of terror. A cleaning lady's childhood artwork inspires her at a critical moment. A humiliated carpenter secretly nails his customer's front door shut. A mentally-disabled teenager tries to help a frightened child. A mysterious woman moves into a neighborhood and turns it upside-down.

These and other stories offer solid entertainment along with luminous moments of heartache, humor, fear and hope.

Nineteen stories of heartache and humor, fear and hope, devastation and survival, show people wrestling with many different situations, some strong characters, some with little power, young and old, wise or cynical or troubled, from good-hearted to crafty to cruel, all interesting, all treated with compassion and occasional irony by the author.

Nice selection of short stories. Some I really enjoyed like "The Walk Will Do Them Good." A lot of the stories felt unfinished, they suddenly ended and I seemed to have missed the point.

The first story in this collection is wonderful. I enjoyed every moment of this tale of an ex-cab driver hired to chauffeur a wealthy old man. As the ending of the story approached, I kept thinking "Wouldn't it be great if . . . ?" And, then - the author WENT THERE. (I love it when that happens!)

Unfortunately, the rest of the stories didn't shine like this one.

Only one other tale - Empty Gesture - a sad story about an African American mother and her son tormented by white supremacists, is even memorable.

I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from reading these stories, but most of them didn't captivate me.

**I received a free Kindle edition from a Goodreads giveaway**

An interesting look at the hidden, darker underbelly of people’s motives and interactions. I found myself nodding along in agreement or appreciation with many of the imperfect characters.

My only complaint (or why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars) is that some were too similar—working-class average-joes with a funky agenda—which is fine; they are all different stories, different characters—that seemed to bleed into each other. (Which I guess could have been the point. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Either way, I did very much enjoy these stories!

* I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway!*

'It Wont Stay Light Forever' had some interesting stories but I found it hard to connect with most of the characters. This book was really hard for me (personally) to get into; but that doesn't mean it's a bad book. Sometimes you just don't vibe with a book, or particular storytelling style and I believe that was the case with myself and this particular book.
I would recommend this book to my friends who like short stories.
