Elena is part of a generation of artificially created children. Believed to be humankind's last hope, they have only one purpose: to breed. Elena, however, doesn’t want children.
If she goes against the Council, she risks losing everything she ever cared about.
When her world is attacked, threatening to end their very way of life, Elena must fight for her, and her peers’, right to live how they want and make their own choices.
Trigger warning: Death of parent. Blood and gore. Rape. War.
I will not be rating this, as I'm the author, but I will be adding it to my read books, 'cause you guys have no idea how many times I've read it already!
After reading Survival Kit by the same author, I decided to see what other books they had on offer and found this one. It is also a post-apocalyptic survival story on Kindle Unlimited - but is set in an indeterminate future, where people have been living inside huge domes for generations, after a virus had attacked humanity and its ability to reproduce.
We meet Elena, an "A.G". Artificial Generation. An elite person specifically engineered from the embryo to be stronger and more resilient to the virus and essentially produced to become a prime specimen for breeding.
When we meet her she is 23 and has never had any interest in a boyfriend or making babies. The people in charge are not entirely awful about her hesitation, it's not like she is being forced into anything against her will. But they do make it clear she is more useful as a baby maker and that is the ultimate goal, to ensure humans survival. It's all very clinical and scientific, she had allowed them to take some of her eggs for other women - but still insisted she did not want to become pregnant herself, whether through artificial insemination or otherwise. She has friends who are also AG's and we get to know this world through her interaction with them and her parents.
We get the typical 'young adult' realizing why she isn't interested in any of the young men around her, when she meets Rowan - a girl with a steampunk tinker kind of vibe about her, that sparks an interest. She is from another sector of the Domes, and is asking odd questions about the outside and the possibility of other humans out there.
A series of odd occurrences has Rowan and Elena poking around and asking more questions, and then it appears targeted attacks from outside begin to happen. When their world is literally broken open around them, they realize they all have to step up and fight for their home and people against Outsider Barbarians, they never realize existed until now!
There are shady dealings with a council of leaders, where Elena gets herself quite involved in, politically. She becomes a leader and inspiration to many of the people across all the sectors of the Domes. She is brave and competent but also kind of an accidental hero, too. If you've ever read The Hunger Games or Divergent, the premise of the young ladies who become leaders is pretty much the same. It does very much read Young Adult - which isn't my favourite genre, but I found the storyline overall to be satisfying.
The romance is a little insta. But Rowan is smart, fun, and quite forward, so it's easy to see how the more sheltered Elena would fall for her quickly. But sometimes I did wonder what Rowan and even all the members of the domes saw in her as a leader to follow, when a lot of the time it seemed just dumb luck that she succeeded in the things she had, and clearly had a LOT of help and guidance, too. But such is the narrative of these types of stories. As I said if you're into the whole 'sole woman has everyones faith put in her' concept, because they needed a hero and leader - so they step up - you'll probably enjoy it!
And I definitely did, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of difference with being in the Domes, and fighting against a virus, and the seemingly 'barbaric' humans on the outside. It reminded me quite a bit of The 100 in some ways. So if you are a fan of any of the titles I've mentioned, you will probably enjoy this one, and I would recommend the read. Kindle Unlimited!
How do you live up to the "You are Earth's last best Hope" hype?! You've been told your entire life your are so very special , your given the very best of everything, not because your brilliant, the best fighters or the most courageous but because you are expected to breed like rabbits for the rest of your life. As many different partners as you can - what happens when this goes against your personal values. For Elena this is against her personal values, she has no desire to every be pregnant. Is she letting down her people by not contributing her DNA? Then the unthinkable happens - something attacks the domes they live in exposing them to the poisonous outside environment. Elena leads thousands to safety - perhaps this is her destiny, not babies but to protect her people from this new threat from the outside.
Dystopian Steampunk at Its Finest: An Artificial Generation Review
Brace yourselves. Are you ready for an amazing novel full of dystopian sci fi with a flare of steampunk? I have the book for you! Artificial Generation is a book by A. Haga, and it’s a fun read with plenty of action and fun for all.
Artificial Generation has a unique storyline that will keep you engaged. Elena, our main character, has been created specifically to have children with the same amazing genetics. These breeders are mankind seemingly last hope after a virus decimates the population. When trouble begins in the Domes (the space where the last humans are kept away from the virus), Elena’s world is turned upside down.
I loved the story as it kept me interested. It was certainly a quick read for me. Plot pacing was just right, enough to keep you wanting more. My only thing was that I kind of wanted the story to go via the Fallout 3 main plot with Vault 101, but that’s just me and my crazy-self wanting everything to be Fallout-esque. Trust me, you’ll like this one.
Elena is a strong female character, one who is relatable and likable. The support characters add to her development as a character as well as the suspense of the book. Plus, I enjoyed the love interest (sorry, romance author here).
I found that the setting was really the star of the show. The idea of the Domes, which sheltered everyone from the outside world, was really cool. I also loved how there was this very sterile sci fi part of the society, and then there was this whole steampunk subculture sitting alongside it—very unique indeed!
If you haven’t had a chance to grab this one and are looking for a cool mash-up of genres, Artificial Generation is for you. There’s a little bit of everything: genetically modified humans, sci fi domes, steampunk, run and gun action, and a love story. Talk about a win-win, right?
I don't really rate books on here, more like a place I collect what I've read so I remember. But I've come to know Anniken - the author - and so I wanted to give her a review and rating. Not only for her, but because this book is pretty amazing and I wish more folks knew about it and get to read it. There's action, LGBT+ romance, great characters, and a world I want to explore for a 10 book series or more!
