Well-formulated and neatly explained mystery, with too many side frills and nothing particularly exciting.
Not that it’s boring, I suppose it’s quite elaborate for its time but overall there’s a straight template feel about the story and its characters.
Drury Lane’s ‘handicap’ was there merely as a page-filler for it bore little significance to his deductive analysis and was barely mentioned after the first few introductory chapters. Only DeWitt was mildly interesting as a character dealing with some inner conflict.

The Tragedy of X by Ellery Queen is the first book in the Drury Lane Mystery series. A man is poisoned on a crowded streetcar and police detective Thrumm and District Attorney Bruno request the help of retired deaf actor and sleuth Drury Lane. A complex mystery which was a bit drawn out in my opinion. The explanations were quite unnecessarily detailed. Overall a bit boring and difficult to finish.

Truyện này phải đổi tên thành "ngài Drury Lane và tập đoàn fanboy" mới đúng. Trinh thám có đến ba người chết nhưng khi đọc lại có cảm giác thoải mái, rất dễ chịu, không biết có phải vì truyện thuộc thể loại cozy mystery không.
Ngài Drury Lane, nhân vật chính của chúng ta, là một diễn viên kịch có tiếng chuyên đóng vở Hamlet nay buộc phải giải nghệ do hai tai bị điếc. Sau khi giải nghệ, ông nhận ra cuộc đời thực ly kỳ không kém sân khấu, và vì ông đã đóng vở Hamlet nhiều đến nỗi có thể thấu hiểu được tâm lý của cả nạn nhân lẫn kẻ giết người, ông quyết định giúp đỡ cảnh sát một tay trong việc phá án này nọ. Drury Lane được miêu tả là một người đàn ông sáu mươi tuổi nhưng cơ thể gầy gò, săn chắc và rám nắng tựa như thanh niên, lưng thẳng tắp. Ông là một người điềm tĩnh, lịch sự, giọng nói tạo cảm giác khá êm ái tuy đôi khi hứng lên một cái là ăn nói dài dòng kinh khủng và nhắc đến kịch cọt, Shakespeare để làm ví dụ liên tục.
Vì Drury Lane là một kiểu idol thời bấy giờ nên đi đến đâu là được chào đón đến đó, có fanboy xoắn xuýt đến đó, cảnh sát thấy phiền quá cũng chả nỡ hét vào mặt hơ hơ. Hãy tưởng tượng thế này: Người quyền cao chức trọng nhìn thấy là cười toe toét ngay, người bị kết án oan nhìn thấy là muốn dựa dẫm ngay, hai vị cảnh sát khá là thô bạo (nhưng ít ra được viết là có chút não), chuyên hét vào mặt thiên hạ trong truyện, ngờ vực tài phá án của Drudy Lane hết quá 2/3 truyện nhìn thấy cũng chỉ biết cười trừ, cho tham gia phá án, bực lắm rồi cũng không gầm gè được quá ba lời =)) Mấy màn này sẽ khá là lố bịch nếu không nhờ tác giả đủ điêu luyện để viết ra được nhân vật Drury Lane thực sự thuyết phục: Tao nhã và có học thức, có phong cách quý tộc, làm việc từ tốn tạo cảm giác an toàn và an tâm tuyệt đối. Những lúc ông nóng vội nhất thì thái độ của ông vẫn rất nhàn nhã, ung dung. Ông không thích cách làm việc cứng nhắc của sở cảnh sát, nhưng vẫn đối xử với họ một cách tử tế và gần như là bao dung.
Phần án mạng này nọ trong truyện thì đối với mình không ấn tượng lắm, nhưng mình thích thế. Truyện thời này không giống bây giờ là luôn đi quá sâu vào đời tư, suy nghĩ của người thân nạn nhân hay sát thủ để ép mọi người đồng cảm với họ này nọ, mà tập trung vào quá trình điều tra và những con người làm công việc điều tra hơn. Nói thẳng ra là không "khoe mẽ" tui hiểu tâm lý học lắm đó như kiểu nhiều cuốn cố quá thành quá cố của ngày nay. Được cái vụ hung thủ là ai đúng là khá bất ngờ. Nếu mình không được cảnh báo trước đủ kiểu là bạn sẽ không ngờ hung thủ là kẻ nào đâu thì chắc sẽ thấy ấn tượng với quyển truyện hơn nhiều.

The police are stumped until they receive a letter from the famous retired actor, Mr. Drury Lane, claiming to have solved the crime by reading newspaper reports. He knows the killer’s name—but now he has to catch him.
The trademark of an Ellery Queen book is that all the clues to solve the mystery are presented to the reader, so that he/she has as much a chance to figure it all out as the detective in the story. This series starring Drury Lane, retired Shakespearean actor, is no exception. But I must say, solving this mystery would have required alot of thinking time on my part because the murderer turned out to be the MOSY unlikely character in the book. (And I don't mean the butler.) Intriguing read, as always. I look forward to reading the rest of the book in this 4-volume series throughout this year.

Tấn bi kịch đầu tiên và một cuốn trinh thám cổ điển nên đúng là nó hơi bị lang mang thật. Cốt truyện hay, nhưng cách dẵn dắt có phần hơi lề mề. Hung thủ khó đoán, lời giải cho những nút thắt cũng khá logic và hợp lý. Cuốn này đọc như kiểu tác giả muốn chơi trò "Ai thông minh hơn ông Lane?" vậy. =))
Có thể nói đây là một trong những lần đọc dài cả tháng cho một cuốn sách mà vẫn đu đến cuối. Không phải là cuốn này không hay, mà chẳng qua đang trong lúc ít có thời gian và lười đọc sách của mình thôi.

Not my favorite Ellery Queen book and a little too long, but still a decent mystery. I did like getting to know the eccentric Drury Lane here in The Tragedy of X. I may have to continue the series.

Giải án xuất sắc như thế "lầy" mới gọi là giải nè!!!
Điều tra một vụ án giống như giải toán vậy , phải có ẩn số X ( có điều kiện đúng và đủ , ra nhiều nghiệm thì phải có các gạch đầu dòng giải thích cho các nghiệm đó), cuốn này đưa ra logic không thể nào chặt chẽ hơn được ( 10đ)....
Mà tại sao khen nhiều vậy mà cho 3 sao là do cách viết đúng thứ mình ghét nhất trong các cuốn trinh thám - đó là đi lấy lời khai của nhiều nhân vật lê thê, lan man ( đọc mệt cm:))) ), còn với đó là sự trịch thượng và vô dụng của thanh tra....

The mystery/plot were fine, but the protagonist, Drury Lane is a hammy, creepy weirdo, and I spent most of the book hoping that someone would smack him with a shovel.

Sau khi đọc xong "Tấn bi kịch X" thì có lẽ mình sẽ trở thành fanboy của ngài Drury Lane mấy thôi. Mà thú thật, một người lịch thiệp, tao nhã, quý phái như ngài thì có hẳn một fan club cũng không có gì quá ngạc nhiên. :)))
"Tấn bi kịch X" tuy không kịch tính hay bùng nổ như nhưng bộ "Hollywood" hiện nay, nhưng sự kiện trong nó nối tiếp nhau một cách liền mạch và đầy hấp dẫn, cùng với mọi phần kịch tính và bí ẩn đều được "nổ" ở cuối sách thì hẳn sẽ không làm bạn thất vọng. Hung thủ đúng là kẻ mà dù ta đã lờ mờ đoán ra nhưng không thể nào nắm bắt được. Mình cũng đã há hốc trợn mắt khi biết tên hung thủ cùng tỷ đoạn của hắn. Thiết nghĩ, trừ ngài Lane ra chẳng ai có thể bắt được tên cáo già này.

Quite the mystery....clues, people, places...you need paper and pencil to keep the players straight...but, the clues are all there....just buried under a blizzard of useless information...still...I recommend it...and I will be reading the other three books in the series

我先生推薦我看這本經典本格推理小說，老實說閱讀初頭感到納悶，特別是說到前著名莎士比亞戲劇演員哲瑞雷恩的時候，因為我本人比較喜歡故事單刀直入講述主線發展，所以認為雷恩的背景解說意義不大，不明所以，除非是對後續發展(續作)有關聯。讀到中後期節奏相對明快，我很喜歡解謎的篇幅，由雷恩的角度出發，一步步敘述他的思維，明白真相並非難以發現，只是自己在閱讀時忽略了一些不太顯眼的「提示」。

Setelah pengalaman yang tidak begitu memuaskan setelah baca The Greek Coffin Mystery, saya mencoba seri detektif lain dari duo penulis Dannay-Lee (Barnaby Ross), yaitu Drury Lane.
Drury Lane adalah seorang pensiunan aktor pementasan Shakespeare berumur sekitar 60 tahunan. Di waktu senggang masa pensiunnya ini Lane mulai tertarik pada perkara kriminal dan pada satu saat mengirimkan pendapatnya mengenai solusi dari suatu perkara kriminal pada pihak kepolisian. Dan ternyata solusi dari Lane tersebut membuahkan hasil, pelaku pun berhasil diamankan. Berawal dari sanalah Inspector Thumm dan District Attorney Bruno mempercayai kemampuan Lane dalam memecahkan perkara kriminal dan kali ini mereka membutuhkan bantuan Lane untuk mengusut kasus pembunuhan yang terjadi di sebuah gerbong trem.

Bagi saya karakter Drury Lane tampak lebih menarik dibanding Ellery Queen.
Pertama, dia seorang pensiunan aktor pementasan Shakespeare. Background yang cukup tidak biasa untuk seorang detektif amatir.
Kedua, Lane adalah seorang yang tuli. Dia menggunakan teknik membaca gerak bibir untuk mengerti apa yang dikatakan lawan bicaranya.
Ketiga, Lane cukup aktif melakukan investigasi. Di The Greek Coffin Mystery sedikit banyak Ellery juga melakukan investigasi, namun investigasi yang dilakukan Lane terkesan lebih aktif, menonjol dan lebih engaging. Mengapa? Karena Lane menggunakan pengetahuan, pengalaman, dan skill-nya sebagai seorang aktor ketika melakukan investigasi.
Melihat fakta bahwa Lane sebenarnya memiliki keterbatasan dalam hal pendengaran, hal ini membuat saya semakin kagum akan sosok Drury Lane.

Misteri yang disuguhkan di The Tragedy of X ini memang tipikal misteri di novel2 seri Ellery Queen. Saya baru membaca dua judul di seri tersebut, The Roman Hat Mystery (dan masih belum tamat dibaca) dan The Greek Coffin Mystery (yang ini sudah tamat), tapi terlihat sekali kesamaan dari ketiga buku ini. Yang paling terlihat adalah seting kasus di tempat umum dan penyelidikan polisi yang terus memburu tersangka baru (Roman Hat) dan penyelesaian kasus/penjelasan solusi dengan metode rangkaian deduksi (Greek Coffin).
Saya sedikit kesulitan untuk mengikuti penyelidikan polisi yang sangat menyeluruh namun terasa membosankan ini. Mungkin memang belum terbiasa dengan gaya penulisan Ellery Queen (perlu baca karyanya yang lain). Saya lebih suka gaya penulisan JDC atau Agatha Christie yang cukup memberatkan sisi atmosfer cerita (terutama JDC). Meskipun begitu, ada juga momen2 ketika penyelidikan dalam novel sangat asyik untuk diikuti.

Dari sisi penjelasan/solusi, flow-nya tidak terlalu berbelit-belit; cukup mudah diikuti. Namun saya sedikit menyayangkan keputusan Lane untuk menutup mulut soal identitas pelaku. Di akhir pemaparan kasus pertama (ya, ada lebih dari satu kasus pembunuhan) Lane mengatakan bahwa ia tahu siapa pelakunya, tapi karena suatu alasan belum bisa membeberkannya pada Inspector Thumm dan District Attorney Bruno. Well mungkin plot cerita yang disusun Barnaby Ross membutuhkan Lane untuk bertindak seperti itu.

Terakhir. Overall, karakternya menarik (Drury Lane). Misteri dan penjelasannya cukup memuaskan. Terutama rangkaian deduksi yang menuntun Drury Lane di kesimpulan siapa pelakunya. I like it! It was so simple! And despite all of its flaw, The Tragedy of X gives you an excellent mystery. 4 Stars!

Bagi saya karakter Drury Lane tampak lebih menarik dibanding Ellery Queen.
Pertama, dia seorang pensiunan aktor pementasan Shakespeare. Background yang cukup tidak biasa untuk seorang detektif amatir.
Kedua, Lane adalah seorang yang tuli. Dia menggunakan teknik membaca gerak bibir untuk mengerti apa yang dikatakan lawan bicaranya.
Ketiga, Lane cukup aktif melakukan investigasi. Di The Greek Coffin Mystery sedikit banyak Ellery juga melakukan investigasi, namun investigasi yang dilakukan Lane terkesan lebih aktif, menonjol dan lebih engaging. Mengapa? Karena Lane menggunakan pengetahuan, pengalaman, dan skill-nya sebagai seorang aktor ketika melakukan investigasi.
Melihat fakta bahwa Lane sebenarnya memiliki keterbatasan dalam hal pendengaran, hal ini membuat saya semakin kagum akan sosok Drury Lane.

Misteri yang disuguhkan di The Tragedy of X ini memang tipikal misteri di novel2 seri Ellery Queen. Saya baru membaca dua judul di seri tersebut, The Roman Hat Mystery (dan masih belum tamat dibaca) dan The Greek Coffin Mystery (yang ini sudah tamat), tapi terlihat sekali kesamaan dari ketiga buku ini. Yang paling terlihat adalah seting kasus di tempat umum dan penyelidikan polisi yang terus memburu tersangka baru (Roman Hat) dan penyelesaian kasus/penjelasan solusi dengan metode rangkaian deduksi (Greek Coffin).
Saya sedikit kesulitan untuk mengikuti penyelidikan polisi yang sangat menyeluruh namun terasa membosankan ini. Mungkin memang belum terbiasa dengan gaya penulisan Ellery Queen (perlu baca karyanya yang lain). Saya lebih suka gaya penulisan JDC atau Agatha Christie yang cukup memberatkan sisi atmosfer cerita (terutama JDC). Meskipun begitu, ada juga momen2 ketika penyelidikan dalam novel sangat asyik untuk diikuti.

Dari sisi penjelasan/solusi, flow-nya tidak terlalu berbelit-belit; cukup mudah diikuti. Namun saya sedikit menyayangkan keputusan Lane untuk menutup mulut soal identitas pelaku. Di akhir pemaparan kasus pertama (ya, ada lebih dari satu kasus pembunuhan) Lane mengatakan bahwa ia tahu siapa pelakunya, tapi karena suatu alasan belum bisa membeberkannya pada Inspector Thumm dan District Attorney Bruno. Well mungkin plot cerita yang disusun Barnaby Ross membutuhkan Lane untuk bertindak seperti itu.

Terakhir. Overall, karakternya menarik (Drury Lane). Misteri dan penjelasannya cukup memuaskan. Terutama rangkaian deduksi yang menuntun Drury Lane di kesimpulan siapa pelakunya. I like it! It was so simple! And despite all of its flaw, The Tragedy of X gives you an excellent mystery. 4 Stars!

As a longtime Ellery Queen fan (to the point that I can't eradicate from my mind this EQ homage I've thought of, in parallel with my Ed McBain homage The City in These Pages), I leapt eagerly on the very first EQ novel, written by the Dannay/Lee team and featuring not Ellery and his Dad but the deaf Shakespearean actor Drury Lane, who lives surrounded by dwarf servants in his suburban palace, The Hamlet, and happily courts entreaties by the NYPD, in the bulky shape of Inspector Thumm (a sort of ur-Velie, albeit of a different rank; I kept expecting his forename to be revealed as Tom). It's made clear this isn't Drury Lane's first case, but it's the first to be committed to print . . .
And the trouble is, I found the novel boring. There's nothing of the lightness of touch that Dannay/Lee would discover when, just a few years later, they started to recount the adventures of the somewhat fey novelist Ellery Queen, whose NYPD father Richard probably wasn't on a page that lacked the adjective "irascible". Here we have a morally corrupt broker slain on a crowded NYC streetcar by use of a bizarrely unlikely murder weapon, one whose use is so fraught with the likelihood of something going wrong that no one in their right mind would think to use it. There are two more murders, both of which seem designed less to intrigue the reader than to demonstrate Drury Lane's -- i.e., the authors' -- cleverness. Various of the plot points hinge on the ability of disguises to deceive observers; in the short term this is just about plausible, but most of us see through a disguise pretty damn' fast. One plot point depends on the fact that a letter written in fountain pen is unaffected by being submerged for a while in the waters of the Hudson . . .
And Drury Lane's deafness? I kept expecting it to impact the plot; nope. I'm sure there were instances of the supposedly deaf Drury lipreading people he wasn't actually looking at. I fairly soon became convinced that Drury's deafness was just a gimmick -- like The Hamlet, like the dwarfish servants -- designed to make the character seem quirky and thus more interesting.
There's a kind of pre-Code sensibility to the text, which is on the one hand refreshing -- there's none of the silly pretense about extramarital sex that Hollywood would soon insist upon -- and on the other cringeworthy: the soon-to-be-EQ authors are just about okay for their era in terms of racial stereotyping, but the attitude toward dwarfs and the disabled is depressing.
I'm in a dither about whether to read The Tragedy of Y and The Tragedy of Z. As an EQ devotee I obviously feel I should tackle the only two of the canon I've never read; I just hope they're better.

Bỏ qua các yêu tố về văn phong thì cuốn này hoàn toàn xứng đáng 5 sao chỉ dựa trên yếu tố trinh thám. Một cuốn sách khá mẫu mực cho phong cách của Queen. Vụ án với các nạn nhân xuất hiện liên tiếp khá kịch tính (nếu tác giả không dẫn dắt dông dài tả cảnh tả lan man khác). Thám tử xuất hiện, tung ra màn suy luận choáng ngợp, logic đến từng chi tiết. Nhân vật thám tử Drury Lane rất thu hút, năng lực của ông này hoàn toàn thuyết phục mình, chỉ có điểm trừ nhỏ là ổng có thể ngăn chặn các vụ án sau nhưng ổng đã không làm thế, giữ các suy luận đến chương cuối cùng. Không thuyết phục về mạch chuyện nhưng tạo ra màn suy luận đỉnh cao quá nên có thể chấp nhận.

Plays host to the same problems with pacing that i usually encounter with Queen. The first half felt GLACIAL. It does pick up in the second half, and there are a couple of neat chains of deduction. The final solution hinges a bit too strongly on elements introduced right before the reveal, which echoes how I felt about another Queen I read not too long ago.
I'll still read more Queen, but again, I still feel that A) he lacks the economy of Christie and that B) his solutions are more contrived and rely considerably more on the ingenuity of the criminal.

Disappointing 30s mystery from the Ellery Queen team writing as Barnaby Ross, with retired actor Drury Lane acting as detective. The first half is fun but the plotting becomes rather baroque, and the wrap-up takes so long, I lost interest 15 pages from the end and almost didn't bother to finish it. As is often the problem, the "who" who "done it" is someone we're not very invested in, and the reason for the murders isn't very interesting. I probably won't bother with any other Drury Lane books.

昨天今天看完了这本X的悲剧。逻辑推理不错，却像一个端坐在那里面容姣好的女人，美则美亦，但没有共舞一曲的冲动。
我想，没有人能像阿婆一样写出人性的苍凉和悲悯，那人世间的阴暗和脆弱挣扎。本科时候看了几十本阿加莎，那时候的梦想是有自己的房子，收集阿加莎所有的中文版和英文版。Ex最后还了一些阿加莎的书给我。我去Hyatt的大堂拿的。他在短信里说我知道那些对你很重要。我提着那个沉重的袋子走出大堂的时候想这些真的重要么，或许没有我以为的重要，又或许本来就没有什么是重要的。就像那些温暖的拥抱，说过就算的誓言，存在的理由都是让人活得兴致勃勃，直到幻灭的那一天。
那些阿加莎在书架上一放就是好几年。我很少翻动。我像破茧成蝶那般脱去了很多过去的习惯，像是人间蒸发般消失在我们共同的朋友中。破碎的何止是收集阿加莎的梦想呢？还有很多对未来的憧憬，那些像海市蜃楼般远去的美好愿景。或许那些，都是一夜长大的代价。

When I read the recommendations about this book, I kinda expected it might blow my mind. After reading it, I think it may be unworthy of the name. But there's no accounting for taste, so I hope my opinions don't spoil the interest of anyone who wants to read this book.

It might be because this book was hyped up to me so much, but I hated this in the end. The writing throughout was overwrought, using a lot of words to say very little, and being extremely long-winded in reaching the point of a sentence or argument.
Then there's the ending deductions, which I have trouble buying. The conductor is the person who everyone's eyes are on during the boarding of a bus (to give him money), so I find it hard to believe someone does not see the guy slip something into someone else's pocket (it's mentioned in the scene that people are waving their fares in his face and that he's shouting orders, so we know many eyes are on him). Then the glove is logical, but I still think an alternative like in a medicine bottle is possible too. Lane says a handkerchief is clumsy, but that doesn't mean it's not possible (and you can wipe any spare poison on some random seat or so). Not to mention, if you're willing to include other passengers, someone else could just use a long sleeve or something and wipe it. So I don't honestly like the deductive process that lead to identifying Woods on the bus.
I appreciate more the clue of the inconsistency of appendicitis scar from two years ago despite working straight for five years, as well as the clue of the ticket book being moved and the clue of Stopes' handwriting and Woods' handwriting being similar, but I still really dislike woods as the culprit.
I find the maintaining of three different identities while working non stop for five years very hard to swallow, especially with hours extending into each other and the legal papers needed to maintain such a thing. It seems like a very long and cumbersome way to commit the murders, waiting out 5y instead of doing it much faster and getting revenge sooner. He also targets Harley first instead of the man who murdered his wife, and he allows them to continue living for five years longer. If he has an alternate identity, he could just do the murder and stop living as that identity, using the one of the other two immediately.
Then there's minor things that I don't think lead anywhere. Some plots like Mrs. DeWitt's adultery or her superstitious nature don't ever get brought up again, and it's completely pointless. She doesn't even work as a red herring because Lane says himself "X" is a man and is the same as Martin Stopes.
Overall, honestly not a fan of the piece because of the ending deductions but also because of the unbelievability of the end and the poor writing. I find it very chunky and roundabout, using a lot of words to say very little. (I know it's common in other Queen's from what I've tried, but it just makes reading Queen extremely unfun.) I also don't like some assumptions the writers take in this, much like in Greek/Siamese as well, where I found some assumptions for the deductions to be questionable.
Anyway, it was extremely disappointing, and I'm surprised this was top voted in one of the Japanese polls I saw. It makes me want to try other Queens less. I'm not sure, but I'll think it over. I may not bother reading any more Queen - we'll see. (Side-note but about 1 month to read all of this, which is about average for me, so at least, it reads a smidge better than Greek, but it's still pretty bad IMHO.)
EDIT: also, the way the police question people is so dumb. I thought this in Greek Coffin, but the inspector uses zero subterfuge. He keeps people in same spot, so there's no chance of catching out contradictions, then applies no tricky pressure. Ex when cornering Collins, he outright tells him Dewitt's murdered, instead of waiting for collins to reveal more (and collins WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF TALKING of what he did wrong, essentially). I think it's more because the writers are garbage at actually writing these kinds of scenes. They always write scenes very literally and directly, but they don't actually know how to be clever with dialogue. They're only good at hiding details/inconsistencies in the army of bloat they have in their piece.
Side note, but the dying message was supremely mediocre and not good with some wild leaps to construe. I also checked this in a word count doc, and it was about 97k words, which really is too much. This truly is just too wordy.
EDIT again: Also, why the eff did Woods send threatening notes in his own handwriting? If he wanted to scare DeWitt, he could use a typewriter, and then he risks no chance of being traced via handwriting. and DeWitt not going to police is dumb in the first place. From his point of view, he could just say it's a murderer who DeWitt helped capture and put into prison, then the murderer escaped and he, DeWitt, seeks protection. It's also strange that he caved to Longstreet's blackmailing from this. Longstreet is in the same boat, so it's not like Longstreet can start talking about the crime the three committed. The more I scrutinized this, the more holes and issues I find. It REALLY makes me want to not bother with more Queen.
Oh, everyone was searched right? So then the wig would be detected the moment police run their hands through the guy's head. Once it's noted down (and I assume they noted down what was searched), they'd realize an inconsistency with the body pulled from the river having actual red hair.

Enjoyed this classic detective fiction. Drury Lane was eccentric and larger than life. However, the smoothness of the reveal, as well as how everything came to the place, was a bit of a letdown.

Barnaby Ross è uno pseudonimo alternativo per la coppia Dannay-Lee, più famosa per i romanzi a firma Ellery Queen e con l’omonimo investigatore come protagonista.
Qui invece il protagonista è Drury Lane, un attore dotato di particolari abilità, parzialmente legate alla sua professione, di comprendere e analizzare anche i più piccoli dettagli e usarli per comprendere dinamica ed esecutore degli omicidi.
In questo romanzo, Drury Lane viene consultato dai suoi amici poliziotti Bruno e Thumm in merito a un difficile caso di omicidio. Un uomo è stato assassinato con il veleno in un autobus affollato, i due investigatori narrano ogni dettaglio all’amico, il quale afferma di avere chiaro chi e come ha commesso il delitto, ma di non poterlo comunicare non avendo le prove. Inizia quindi a investigare. Non dico nulla di più sulla trama, anticipo solo che non sarà l’ultimo delitto che avverrà.
Il personaggio inizialmente ricorda Nero Wolfe (e il Poirot di alcuni romanzi) nella capacità quasi medianica di comprendere, dal racconto di altri, l’esatta dinamica degli eventi ai quali non ha assistito. Ma presto passerà a uno stile di investigazione più dinamico, utilizzando anche le tecniche proprie della sua professione.
Il romanzo non presenta spunti geniali o innovativi, né ha quell’atmosfera di tensione che si taglia col coltello propria di autori come Carr (ma anche di alcuni Queen come in Il caso dei fratelli siamesi o Dieci incredibili giorni), il delitto non figura fra i delitti impossibili (al contrario, decine di persone potrebbero averlo commesso). Pur con queste considerazioni, il romanzo è un autentico gioiello, quasi una quintessenza del giallo classico.
Lo stile è asciutto, molto “teatrale” (i capitoli qui sono chiamati “scene” e raggruppati in tre “atti” e in un “dietro le quinte” finale in omaggio alla professione di Lane) senza divagazioni e con il numero sufficiente di false piste. I personaggi principali sono ben definiti, facili da ricordare, e in giusta quantità (né troppi rischiando che il lettore ci si perda, né troppo pochi rendendo troppo facile l’enigma).
La trama usa diversi temi, che hanno le loro radici nei classici che l’hanno preceduto (Conan Doyle, Chesterton e Christie) abilmente mescolati fra loro in maniera originale e coerente, e si contraddistingue soprattutto per l’estrema lealtà. Tutti gli elementi decisivi sono sotto gli occhi del lettore, che è assolutamente alla pari con Drury Lane nell’analisi. Naturalmente la bravura degli autori in questo romanzo permette di rendere difficile la soluzione anche al lettore più attento ed esperto, menandolo per il naso durante la lettura come è successo a me.
Dal punto di vista del giallo deduttivo puro, si tratta di un autentico capolavoro, la cui lettura non può mancare per l’appassionato.

Từ đấy dẫn đến những án mạng khác của một âm mưu mà đến cuối cùng khi được Lane lý giải, Thumm và Bruno vẫn quá ngạc nhiên.

+ Về mặt nội dung: phải nói trinh thám cổ điển chưa bao giờ làm mình thất vọng. Nhưng cũng chính vì thế truyện sẽ kén người đọc. Cách trình bày thiên về miêu tả, những đoạn hội thoại dài dòng. Đặc biệt với nhân vật đầy tính kịch như Drury Lane sẽ khiến không ít người đọc ngán ngẩm vì tính ẩn dụ, cầu kỳ của từng câu chữ. Về logic của truyện thì không chê được. Tình tiết đưa ra khi đọc đến chương cuối sẽ thấy không thiếu dữ kiện để suy luận ra thủ phạm như nào. Nhưng khi đọc thì cần ghi những chi tiết ra chứ không sẽ bỏ lỡ khá nhiều. Vì truyện đưa ra rất nhiều nhân vật, nhiều tình tiết dư thừa để đánh lừa độc giả.
+ Về bìa: cả series Tấn bi kịch cùng bìa, chỉ khác màu. Chính vì thế nhìn 1 quyển thì hay, nhưng cả thì thấy không ấn tượng. Có chăng chỉ ấn tượng về màu bìa.
Ngoài ra, phần dịch thuật có lẽ cũng là trở ngại khá lớn. Đọc Tấn bi kịch X làm mình khá nhớ thời đọc Sự im lặng của bầy cừu. Đôi chỗ dịch, nhất là những câu nói mang tính kịch của Drury Lane dịch không trôi, mình phải đọc đi đọc lại vẫn không hiểu ý bác ấy là gì.
Tóm lại vì đây là quyển đầu trong series nên vẫn hy vọng những quyển sau sẽ khá hơn về mặt trình bày, dịch thuật (nội dung thì cứ ukie như này hoặc hơn càng tốt)

Cuốn này hay, các tình tiết logic và hợp lý. Có điều nv chính hay trích kịch để nói, ngôn ngữ kịch cũng kha khá nên đôi lúc chán, với lại cách viết (hoặc dịch) không hấp dẫn lắm. Các vụ án không mang tính đẫm máu nhiều nên nhìn chung mọi người sẽ không bị sợ khi đọc dù rằng có tận 3 án mạng xảy ra. Những nhân vật xung quanh ít nhiều đều khả nghi, tình tiết được cài cắm khiến người đọc hoang mang hung thủ sẽ là ai. Bộ này là một quyển thuần phá án, độc giả sẽ cũng theo chân ông Drury Lane đi tìm hiểu dữ kiện, manh mối và cùng tìm ra tên sát nhân. Vậy nên cả tá dữ kiện dư thừa cũng khiến quyển này hơi lê thê. Tuy nhiên, tác giả đã không làm mình thất vọng. Phần hậu trường giải đáp siêu chi tiết và thoả mãn. Mọi người sẽ gật gù đồng tình và không thể tìm ra lỗ hổng logic vì tất cả đã trường hợp có thể xảy ra đều được đề cập và bẻ lại bằng các bằng chứng thuyết phục mà chính chúng ta từng đọc qua khi cùng ông Drury Lane tìm chân tướng. Điểm cộng nữa mà mình thích chính là việc tác giả không bóc tách nội tâm tên tội phạm hay bất cứ nhân vật nào khác. Phạm tội là phạm tội, khỏi bao biện, khỏi dùng thương cảm xã hội nào ở đây. Dù rằng qua hoàn cảnh thì tên này đáng thương thật. Cũng để tên này dễ dàng nhận tội, chịu trói chứ không dùng dằng dằn vặt nhiều làm gì.

Very interesting. While written early in his career, before he became Ellery Queen, the talented writing is evident.
The slightly bumbling police detective Thrumm and the more capable District Attorney Bruno request the estimable talents of a deaf retired actor Drury Lane in solving a “locked room” mystery, though this one is set on a streetcar. The main characters are interesting and well-developed, with more development taking place throughout the story; they were not static characters. And supporting characters also had interest.
There are plenty of twists and turns and a couple other murders before the solution is given. But the solution was a good one (no spoiler), though a bit of a stretch to believe.
And it is the solution that caused me to downgrade my rating. Altogether too lengthy. The number of clues explained were exacerbated by a voluble telling of them. Some were extraneous, some straining belief.
But a good enough novel to encourage me to read the follow up Y and Z mysteries.

It is slightly agitating to read. It is too too long. I felt like I was lost in the mist in the middle of nowhere at all. In fact, I had to grope my way around a massive bunk of words and dialogues to figure the details and to remember them (plenty of details by the way). On the other hand, like many other detective stories, I was thrilled to follow Mr Lane's journey in order to find the perpetrator. The result was astonishing, I must admit. It's just the way the writer wrote. The story could have been better if the writing itself hadn't been lengthened exceedingly and the redundant details had been omitted. In general, I admire Mr Lane. He is so talented and somehow, I think he has a good sense of humor, especially expressing in his behaviour toward those ridiculous Thumm and Bruno. The story is quite a mystery.
