"Sentimental Journey" is the story of Jessica and Brody.
Big no no.
Reasons? Let me explain.
Hero is heavily infatuated with the heroine's older sister who repeatedly rejects him- which he does not take well and leaves for a better futures. Years later, he spots the heroine- who instantly reminds him of the sister. He then starts courting the heroine.
Then there are these weird instances where he keeps calling her green eyes (the color which she shares with her sibling) instead of her name, his insistence to shower her with jewelry, his reluctance to marriage, his callousness with her- and what does our "strong and independent" heroine do? Give up all her self respect, agree to his terms and become a cat pee laden doormat. The ending was kinda believable, but that does not erase the frustration I felt while reading this book.

Well, other reviewers touched on his name calling and abuse... his using her for desired vengeance against her older sister... and her willingness to never speak her mind about anything... but I gotta mention his “put out or I’m dumping you” speech. She couldn’t go through with his demand to become his mistress so he dumped her COLD. Like pulled up to the curb, let her out, and he rolled away... for months! Yes, she IS lucky he stopped the car first. Even when they met up months later after she nearly had a total nervous breakdown, he didn’t come back her... they met up by chance in a restaurant.
There was nothing romantic about this story, except maybe that he kept flying in to see her. But he kept demanding more than she was comfortable with sexually so...
He bought her gifts more as bribes/payoffs. His insecurities were rampant. Worst was that after all his maltreatment, the ending was so unromantic, so anger-filled, so abrupt, you could only wonder if he’d stay with her, and if he did, would he constantly be yelling at her...

Listen, I know romance novels are never the epitome of great literature. But, seriously? I'm terrified that some young girl out there is going to read this book and think that ANYTHING about this is OK. Girls: you should not ever be treated like this. Boys: you should never treat anyone this way. There was nothing romantic about this borderline abusive relationship. Nothing about this was right. I know it's not real but...this was someone's fantasy?!

I don't understand how people can truly like Janet Dailey books. I keep reading hoping for something but I get nothing decent really, no more than a 2.5 rating. The endings are shit, the romance is crappy. No wonder she plagiarized some of her novels, the lady couldn't write herself out of a paper bag.

لا أعلم كيف أصف غرابة تجربة قراءة هذا الكتاب من سلسلة روايات عبير بعنوان "ممر الشوق" بالنسخة العربية.
اخترت قراءته في فترة كنت أشعر فيها بالفتور من القراءة وقلت ربما أحتاج أن أقرأ شيئًا مختلفًا وقديمًا يأخذني إلى زمن المدرسة والمراهقة وروايات عبير البريئة.
أن اقرأ هذه الرواية اليوم بعمر التاسعة والعشرون لم تكن مختلفة كثيرًا عن منال بعمر السادسة عشر، لأن هنالك خطأ جسيم تدور حوله هذه الرواية ولابد أن تدركه أية فتاة تُثمّن نفسها.
يُعامل بطل الرواية البطلة وكأنها مستعبدة ومملوكة ويمطر عليها وابل الأوامر من قبيل "ستذهبين معي للعشاء اليوم" دون أن يحترم خصوصيتها أو يلقي بالًا باللباقة العامة وآداب التعامل، بل يتمادى ليفرض حضوره في حياتها من حيث لا تحتسب، ولكن الأدهى والأمّر هو خضوع البطلة للأمر بداعي "المجاراة" ، كأنها لا تملك "البارض" لتقول لا وتبدي اعتاضها، ف "تسلّك" له كل مرة يفرض نفسه ويحشر نفسه في جدول يومها.
والمُضحك المُبكي هو أن أنك تستطيع أن تُصنّف لقاءهما الأول على أنه تحرّش واضح وصريح، ومع ذلك استمرت البطلة في مجاراته بداعي "الاحترام واللباقة". ما هذا الهراء؟
ومع ذلك، أحببت مسحة الذكريات التي تجلبها قراءة هذه الروايات لأيام الصبا.

I cannot swallow a heroine who is so desperate (and in loved - roll eyes) that she would swallow being with a man even if she knew/suspected that the man is dating her as a substitute for someone.

Meh. 1+ ?
I hoped for a lot from the trope (boy from the wrong side of the tracks makes good & returns to his hometown), but the writing is tepid, the heroine milquetoast, and the hero too-too in the hardened by life role.
Any spark of promise for interesting conflict was scrubbed out with the heroine simply accepting everything. And though there's some subtext there that the hero really does care, a lot, despite himself, it's also almost undone by his temper and manhandling (which wasn't done for any other reason that to make him Masterful & her Uncertain, and not a code for his own uncertainties).
I actually liked the hero better than the heroine; he spoke up and was more honest about things more of the time, and he jet-setted around just to be with her. His throwback '79 attitude wasn't the worst in these old skools, tbh, but paired with the limp flower heroine, it just didn't work.

It would have been 3 star if:
1)The h was not such a putty in the hands of H.
2)The ending was not abrupt.
3)Didn't feel the love from the H.

What a steaming pile of horse manure! It's not even good enough to be used as toilet paper!
Who in their right mind thought this book was a good idea?
Jessica is the most TSTL (too stupid to live) female lead I have ever met, and the "hero" Brodie is nothing but a rage-a-holic who commits acts of domestic violence against MULTIPLE women!
Jessica meets Brodie on the street corner and recognizes him as a guy that used to stalk her sister when they were teens. Actually, on one occasion, Brodie forced his way into their home and pinned her sister against a wall. But what does Jessica do? She agrees to go on a date with him!
Then he starts stalking her too, psychologically/emotionally abusing her (vulgar namecalling, etc.), and even physically abusing her (putting bruises on her arms).
I'm speechless right now. This book is horrible!! This is not romance. This is not even some kinky BDSM stuff... it's straight up ABUSE!!
