She can change a life or even the world with her words.
She should have kept her mouth shut.
Flint thought that having six older brothers and growing up in a dangerous frontier town would prepare her for anything. She soon discovers that the world is a lot more complex than she expected, and it’s going to take more than a strong back and good intentions to achieve her goals.
When it comes to magic, all the wishes in the world won’t change who you really are. And sometimes that’s okay.

I wanted to love this book, but it gets 3.5 out of five stars from me. It seemed like the author couldn’t decide what the book was actually supposed to be about, but in the end it was about Flint accepting her gift and setting out to learn more about it. That journey will be the subject of book two. This novel chronicled a ton of travels and wandering and wondering that led Flint to this realization. The magical gifting wasn’t well-explained and much about the world was skimmed over so it felt like there should have be more to this. Flint is a character you care about, but her motivations never became clearly defined, so there wasn’t much tension in the story although there was plenty of imperilment and action.
Book 1 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The plot and characters developed well enough. The plot was predictable and a bit slow in the telling. It was a lot of back and forth if she should tell others of her magic. The characters are interesting overall, but lack real depth in descriptions. The FMC was a bit bland and naive throughout, but stems from growing up in a small town. The books ending is boring and anticlimactic. Book 2 is a new MC, so I will probably not read it.
I really enjoyed this book. The main character is sensible and self reliant. This makes her very likeable. If there is a sequel I would definitely read it to find out how she grows as a person through more life experiences.
I was curious about this book and decided to read the look inside...and before I knew it I was a third of the way through and it was midnight! This story grabbed me and didn't let go. I enjoyed it very much and finished it the next day. Love the characters! I don't believe in spoilers...so I'll just say read the book. I can't wait for the next story in the series!
