Sonya O. Rose specializes in the study of women and gender in nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain, and has recently turned her attention to the impact of empire and decolonization on British metropolitan life. Her publications deal with the intersections of gender and class in the development of industrial capitalism, and she has published both theoretical and historiographical essays on the subjects of gender, class formation and citizenship. She has also published on nineteenth-century family and household strategies, and on national identity and citizenship in World War II Britain.
ABV. TŞK.
The book, authored by a historian and sociologist who recently passed away, explains in plain language what gender history is, when it was born, its relationship to women's history, and the various branches into which it is divided (bodies and sexuality, relationships with other relations of difference, masculinity). Very interesting are also the final chapters, one dedicated to how gender criticism has changed our way of looking at some important historical events/processes (e.g. the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and in general the birth of the modern world), the other dedicated to the relationship between gender history and linguistic turn, and more generally to the state of the art.
An excellent handbook for those wishing to approach gender history. Its strong point is undoubtedly the clarity of exposition, which make it accessible even to those who do not have a perfect knowledge of English language. Also useful are the historiographical reviews in each chapter, which offer examples of concrete applications of the gender perspective to history. On the other hand, I noticed a repetitiveness of concepts that weighed down the reading a bit. "What is gender history?" nevertheless remains one of the best textbooks out there on this topic.
Literally a bibliography book. I have discovered a lot of special books through this book. I will start reading them too, respectively. That was my favorite part of the book. I can say that the research carried out and the referenced sources attracted my attention more than the content.
In general, the book has very valuable content at the point of re-historiography. The patriarchal relations and masculine discourses that come across in official historiography are being replaced by a matriarchal world and a realistic mind with historiography again. But again within the official history...
The concept of gender is a concept that should be discussed and questioned without adding emotions. Discussing and thinking about this concept at length will certainly mean gaining a more accurate idea. Although the author of history rose the concept of gender in society and successfully evaluated at the point of writing classes, IDs, and other is evaluated in the face of political relations, although the concept of gender itself a masculine discourse, a discourse parsing at this point because I think you're different you didn't bring that I noticed. Cordelia Fine in her book The Illusion of Gender says, "Has there ever been a society in which women and men are in an equal position, perhaps the point of resistance is not biology, but our minds shaped by culture. by saying ", he brought a criticism about the perspectives of identity and class minds by focusing on the issue of the creation of the cultural factor by the patriarchy. Therefore, Rose's feminine historiography actually falls into the position of being part of official historiography. At this point, Leonore Davidoff's view that patriarchal historiography sabotaged the formation of women, which she mentioned in her book Class and Gender in Feminist Historiography, was a more realistic approach. I found the book incomplete at this point. In fact, it would be more correct to say that I was more interested in the bibliography point.
It is at an important point because it gradually conveys what exists and has happened through examples, but it is not a fluent book, it does not have any content plan. In this sense, it can bore you. However, I can say that it is quite an ideal book for those who are interested in academic research and in the subject in particular. I wish you a pleasant reading in advance.
A phenomenal introduction, and concise overview, of the history of gender. Rose manages to explore the complexities surrounding the social construction of gender while simultaneously presenting a reader-friendly book which anyone can read.
