The first three thrillers in the highly acclaimed London Large series featuring Inspector Harry Hawkins: Blood on the Streets, Bound by Blood and Bloody Liberties - plus six bonus short stories.
Meet DI Harry Hawkins, 'H' to his friends and enemies alike. A hurting, damaged man out of time who will not compromise in his one-man war against evil, even as his own demons snap at his heels. For H it’s justice – rough justice, if need be – or nothing.
If you’re a fan of gritty, non-stop crime rollercoasters you'll love these hard-boiled tales from the streets of London.

Roy Robson was born in southeast London, in the UK. He has worked on a market stall, as a squash coach, on a factory assembly line and as a youth support worker. He eventually trained in the dark art of computer programming and worked for many years in the City of London, designing systems to track the flow of money around the world. He will confess to this being an almost impossible task.
He presently writes two series.
The Kenzie Marsh books involve a detective who has hit rock bottom after the death of her son and the collapse of her marriage. She is recruited by British Intelligence on a secret mission where she discovers a conspiracy so shocking it threatens not only her life, but the lives of everybody she knows.
The bestselling London Large series - which he co-authors with his brother Garry - features the relentless force of nature that is DI Harry 'H' Hawkins. As the tide of criminal gangs that flood London increases, Harry will stop at nothing to protect those he loves and do everything in his power to keep his city halfway civilised.
Roy has two daughters and currently lives in Bromley with his wife.
This is a very long book, so I'll review as I read
1.BLOOD ON THE STREETS This book is the first in a new series (to me) and we meet DI Harry Hawkins, an oldfashioned London cop with strong beliefs and fierce loyalties. 'An eye for an eye' mentality suits him better than the rules and regulations of modern police work. He's partnered with Ames, a young Cambridge educated computer-wizz girl of Asian descent. Despite being complete opposites, they work well together. He's got a lot on his plate this time; a gang war between Russian and Albanian mobsters is escalating reaps havoc in the streets of London, The wife of his best friend and her sister are shot by a professional hitman in a park. It's a great and thrilling read, action-packed and full of surprises. This certainly isn't the story of the good old English 'bobby'. There are plenty of victims and the violence and sordidness of war and crime aren't shunned but they're also not glorified or romanticised. I'm curious if the tempo and quality of the stories will continue in the next books. It's a quick read, so I'll find out soon enough.
2. BOUND BY BLOOD Those who didn’t read the first book in the series will have no problem with this 2nd story. The outlines of those events are recapped several times and it even may feel a bit boring to those reading the box set. I’m rather grateful for attentive writers who understand that not everybody can start to read the books in chronological order. And even if you do so, there can be an extended period between the readings. After the traumatic events with the gang-war and paedophile ring, DI Harry Hawkins ended up in the hospital with a bullet wound and has since been recovering. When his shrink finally allows him to return to work, he’s restricted to light work and desk duties. As if this is gonna work! So, when a major pop star is shot in a posh London hotel room, it is DS Amisha Bhanushali and DI Graham Miller-Marchant that are called upon to solve this crime. The supermodel girlfriend witnessed the events but the receptionist who facilitated the murder is killed as well. From doing background checks and phone enquiries, it doesn’t take h long to unofficially head the investigation. He also enlists the help of Andrew Glass, a rookie policeman who turns out a useful and very promising asset. Both Harry’s son and his old friend Ronnie are in prison. Harry feels bad that his friend has taken the wrap for him but can’t change a thing. Certainly not because Graham, as well as Amisha, are less than forthcoming with the true cause of events. Young Ronnie gets groomed and brainwashed by the Albanian gang leader that his dad put in prison in the first book. He turns the young man into a ruthless killer, knowing that this will hurt Harry more than anything else. It’s not because Dragusha is in jail that the Albanian mafia will stop their activities. Their overlords leave the second in command, Fatos Gazjet handles the business in London as he remains in close contact with his former leader. But a lorry containing ‘live’ goods, breaks down on the M and the driver reports that the ‘merchandise’ has died. The order from prison is to kill all the surviving immigrants as well as the driver. But there’s a glitch and in the dark of the night, the driver escapes in the woods without being noticed. In the meantime Dragusha had Ronnie kill a rival gang-leader and manages to organise both their escapes. It doesn’t take long before they’re connected with the mass murder grave that’s been discovered, despite been in jail at the time it happened. Harry wants to save his son somehow; Well aware that they’re transgressing all rules and orders, his 2 colleagues support him. In the meantime, the investigation into the Wishbone murder is temporarily put on the backburner.
Be warned, this isn’t a fairytale with a HEA ending. It’s a tragic, grim story about the ugly underbelly of our society. There is a lot of wanton violence -though not as much as in the first book- and people do die in this book, even likeable and heroic major characters. I don’t know how the brothers chose the names of their main characters, but those of both of Harry’s nearest colleagues are a serious mouthful, and every time they meet a witness or suspect they have to introduce themselves with their full names. It looks as if this is a private inside-joke from the writers. I have to admit that I get most but not every slang term used in the book. Not a problem for me, it adds real ‘couleur local’ and I think it’s a good way to pick up new words and expressions. There are plenty of free dictionaries and translation apps available. If you’re too lazy to do that, usually the meaning is clear from the context.
TIPPING POINT I've read a few of the 'London Large' books already when someone told me that I should have read this short story first. It's featured in the first 'London large' bundle, so I followed the advice. Even though I didn't think it was so important to read this short story first, apart for chronological reasons than, it was a fun read. It must be the first story that features Harry Hawkins when he's just not 16. He's been kicked out of school for violence but that was actually for the noble reason of standing up against some bullies. Unfortunately, Harry reacted a bit too violent and is now seen as the culprit. His father isn't too angry and even offers him a job on his garbage-collecting-crew. It's 1974 and virtually the whole country is on strike and the garbage piles up higher and higher in the streets. Rich neighbourhoods offer very good money to clean their streets and H.'s father is one of the scabs taking the cash over solidarity. It's a real eye-opener for Harry when he sees 1st hand what his dad has to put up with on a daily basis. Eventually, he follows the advice of his school-prefect and joins the army. I didn't live in the UK until a lot later, but I have been told by my friends that this was a situation that was both really disgusting and a dangerous health-hazard, so the description given here may be still on the brighter side of reality; This is an interesting insight into H's background and younger years. It doesn't have much to do with his qualities as a police-detective, but ti introduces us to a young John who'll turn up later on in the books I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Great thriller writing, the story of DI Harry Hawkins and then his continuing story having been “sacked/retired” from the Met is first class. I really enjoyed these three books, great as standalone but enjoyed even more as sequels. Harry Hawkins is an “Old School” copper that knows a “wrong un “ but happy to work with old school lags to win the battles with real hard men invading the UK from Eastern Europe, Middle East etc. Very well written and very enjoyable
London Large, Blood on the Streets #1 - A well written, action filled, suspense novel set in present day London. The multiple battles of old school vs. new police, Russian and Albanian mafias, and the elites of government. The pace is fast and the reader is intrigued by what is on the pages. I couldn't put the book down. I contacted the authors to review their books after reading Tipping Point, the intro of the old school raising of several of the major characters. Tipping Point should be read first, if possible. 5*
London Large, Bound by Blood #2 - A well written, action filled, suspense novel set, in present day London, that picks up from Blood on the Streets a few months later with the same characters plus. The prime focus is still the continuing battle against the Albanian mafia. I couldn't put this book down any more than I did the first book. I contacted the authors to review their books after reading Tipping Point, the intro the old school raising of several of the major characters. Tipping Point should be read first, if possible. 5*
London Large, Bloody Liberties #3- Blood and thunder, to borrow a British phrase. A well written, action packed, suspense filled novel that grabs the reader by the throat and doesn't let go until the end. Then you think about what you've read. I couldn't put the book down; I was immersed in the horror that is so possible today. Good old fashion soldiering, new technology and human perseverance; the combination making a great read. The twisting plot was well thought out and believable; the dialog realistic; and the technology spot on. If you haven't read the prequel and the first two books, you need to do so. Liberties can be read without them, but they enhance the story and you understand the viewpoints of the characters better. 5*
London Large, American Lockdown #4 - Absolutely the best of this good series. Fast paced; action packed; suspense filled; evil and deadly. It's even harder to put this book down, the others were difficult to stop reading, but this one makes the others look like child's play. Every character is well developed and we have the gang from previous books. The plot is a roller coaster ride of horror, hate, revenge, anger and love. Full of emotions: simmering to full blown; you name it, it's covered. How much can H take? I wonder what the next book will be since it will be difficult to top this one, but I'm sure the Robson Brothers can handle it. This is a 10 star book! 5*
London Large, Tipping Point, Prequel- Must read Tipping Point first before LL Blood on the Streets. The introduction of the old school raising of several of the major characters of the London Large series. This intro clarify any confusion the reader may experience in LL, Blood on the Streets. 5*
Sharp and Short: A collection of shorts about Harry 'H' Hawkins, which should be read, in the sequential order of time, before and during the London Large series, especially Tipping Point. Tipping Point will explain a lot about the type of man he is and how he became Harry of the London Large series. Also, there's some information in this book that is mentioned in the first book and causes confusion for the reader that hadn't read TP. The other books have background about how H develops his feelings, good and bad, of the people, good and bad, in his life and work. Also, his mates are featured. Good background stories. 5* Home Front - November, 2003. Age 45. Harry's reaction to a string of violated, murdered young girls and health scare and his marriage. Counter Punch - October, 1984; February, 1985. While still in the army, H handles an extended family problem against a crime lord, with an American GI by H's side. On Tour - 1978. Nineteen year-old H, Shy Nervous John and Ronnie as part of the Anglers Athletic under-21s on tour in Amsterdam and Hamburg. Their first time out of England. That's Life - November, 1995. Little Ronnie is born and H lives his code about his friends, his "own". Unsafe Space - November 2017. As a private investigator, a case leads him to a university where the students are brainwashed by their professor into destruction and hatred. Tipping Point - January, 1974. Prequel - Must read Tipping Point first before LL Blood on the Streets. The introduction of the old school raising of several of the major characters of the London Large series. This intro clarify any confusion the reader may experience in LL, Blood on the Streets. Sharp and Short: End
An interesting collection - three novels and some shorts - featuring D I Harry Hawkins (H) of New Scotland Yard, an old-fashioned cop, Falklands veteran (2 Para) dubbed London's Top Copper for his record of solving crime. The three novels are linked by theme - corruption and subversion in high places and the influx of Albanian and Russian villains. The first two are largely contemporary but the third is set slightly in the future (I judge, by the martial law declaration). H doesn't entirely follow the rule book, and ends the first two books badly injured; he is encouraged to take retirement and in the third book he is a PI. The shorts span his career from the end of his schooldays up to 2017 and serve to fill out what might otherwise be a potentially two-dimensional character.
The writing quickly moves the plot along - short chapters building to four sections in each novel. There are one or two stylistic quirks (computers are never just turned on - they are 'sparked up' - and H surges, barges and barrels his way around, rarely just walking - which underlines his force of nature personality.
I can see why some readers don't take to the books but I enjoyed the experience tremendously - and I'll be looking out the next in the series (which I see I've already bought).
Really great crime dramas. The characters are believable and deep. They are far from perfect, and that's what makes it interesting. Especially if you read this whole collection, you will get background on why they are the way they are. The villans may be a touch flat in comparison, but the point of the stories is the choices of the "good guys". The constant battle between emotions, the letter of the law, and the heart of the law is palpable. Personally, I really liked the shorts even more than the three full-length novels, but it is all worth reading.
Do note that these books are VERY British. Locations and jargon abound with very little explanation. I assume this is all very thrilling for a Londoner, but to someone who has been to Europe only on layovers, I found some parts a bit hard to follow. The kindle dictionary and wiki were sometimes helpful, but often I was left guessing and searching for context clues. It didn't really detract from the book, and not including those phrases and locations would remove some of the authenticity, so I would not recommend a change, but non-British readers should prepare for a bit of a tough read.
Authors, we need a background short story on Amisha.
Just finished the three books, I have not read the short stories yet as I am not a fan of prequels, however will probably read them eventually. But the three novels were fantastic, thoroughly enjoyed them. Wonderful character's that you can relate to, excellent story that kept me hooked from the first page until the last. The authors pull you in from the start. As a front line worker for the NHS this was just the ticket to allow me to get lost between shifts. They are certainly not standalone books so read them in order.
I enjoyed the "London Large Crime Thriller Series: Books 1-3 very much. It was brutal at times but it fit the stories. There was a good back story for the characters also which added a lot to the story. The 6 short stories also helped show why H was such a hard drinking, rough but loyal cop who risked all for family and country. I would recommend the book to readers who like their police detectives old style, rough and ready to do whatever is necessary to get the job done.
Thank you for making these books, available as a set. Once you sink your teeth into the story, you just can continue on to the next book. I look forward to what you have planned for H in the future, I’m ready for the next book. As a side note, these authors have interesting London history stories they feature on their web site and e-mail. Make sure you don’t miss it.
I binge read the whole box set because i had never experienced anything like this before. Being Canadian i had a bit of trouble with the British slang but was able to sort it out by context and the use of my dictionary. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants something different.
I enjoyed this collection of books! I love the main character and how he relates to the other characters in the books. The plots are unique and full of action. There is a lot of emotion in the main character. It is interesting to read how he became who he is. The writers do a wonderful job of keeping your interest with the twists and turns in their books.
Harry's adventures will become addictive reading. Hard to put down.
I must confess that I didn't finish the 3rd book because I just did not care for the plot. However, I'm guessing that many readers will find it entertaining.
Great read for followers of British TV cop shows. Put together as a chronology made it so enjoyable & a real page turner to see what would happen next. The bonus 6 short stories also contributed so much to authentication of the characters. Loved it.
I is the kind of detective that keeps events moving. He is tough and smart at the same time. It was nice to see him grow over the three books. I'm hoping he reappears in future books.
Did.This was three books. London, and England also is be invaded by a group of foreigners intent on creating havoc and destabilizing the country. Finally the queen is threatened and ‘H’ is in his element. Lots action. Lots of gore. Quite a read.
London Large is, in my humble opinion, the best police drama series out there. Thanks to the authors for putting everything together in one convenient box set.
