She'd waited so long for this moment...

Amy Van Winkle stood on her toes as Luke Sutter exited the airport terminal. Being apart for six years while he served his country had taken extreme determination and 24-hour patience. But here he was safely back in their hometown of Pensacola Florida, and Amy could hardly contain her excitement. Her face lit up, and she was seconds from taking off into a sprint until another woman saunters his way. Their embrace sucks the wind out of Amy, and she can't help but feel as if everything they'd shared was a figment of her imagination.

Luke Scutter has been waiting to reunite with Amy Van Winkle since the day he left for basic training. So when his tour in Iraq is complete, he wants to surprise her, but that comes to a halt when his pen pal shows up at the airport with a surprise of her own. Not only is it a startling ambush, but Amy is there, and the glow she once held is doused. Now Luke must make amends and do everything in his power not to lose Amy. But will it be enough to coat the sting of betrayal or will their relationship end before it can begin?

This was one time where I wish there was no HEA - where the h told him to shove off! I never felt that he really got it that he did in fact cheat. He kept giving that stupid excuse over & over again when it was his damn fault for not talking directly to his GF. I hate when books always have the heroine forgive the stupid asshole. Why can't we for once have heroine walk away? If you call it a romance, then don't have cheaters because what he did? it IS cheating!

The hero was a moron! I some other woman came up and hugged my boyfriend when he got home from deployment, I would have been on the news and in jail for murder. That would be a homecoming he would never forget. He talked to this other woman for six years. He told her his fears, his dreams, and he craved her support and he didn't want to give her up when she said she wished he didn't have a girlfriend. He knew where this relationship was heading but he needed her to support him and talk to because he was afraid. He called her because he said his girlfriend, who loved and waited for him for six years wasn't available. They had an arranged time for a call and he kept to it. He did try to call her a couple of times but she wasn't home and that led him to call the snake. He never told the h that he needed her because he was afraid. He never told her he was talking with the other woman and he was deceptive. I understood her hurt. I wouldn't like that either. I would feel betrayed. No he didn't cheat physically which saved me from throwing my Kindle at my poor husbands head but he did cheat. Well at least to me it was cheating. He hid it and his relationship and the girl was a snake. I think the 'ho-snake' loved him and she righfully expected something for her loyalty but he came home to the h because he loved her. (gag me) The OW waited for his call instead of going out and she was always available whenever he called. She had ulterior motives but he fed those motives by calling her instead of the h. Yes she wasn't a nice person in highschool and was trying to break them up now but he is the one that gave her false hope. And the h was so hurt but he asked her to marry him and of course she said yes and they lived HEA. But in my heart, I would wonder if he would still contact someone else when times got tough. Very disappointing book for me.

This hero is TSTL and in my point of view he cheated emotionally over the years that he kept phone calls and conversations with another woman. He himself admits the importance of the other woman to maintain his sanity.
I think everything was settled very easily and our heroine forgave everything. I wish he'd realized it was wrong and groveled more.
I finished the book and got the feeling that something was missing.
Ok read.

“Who is she?”
“She is no one,” Luke said.

She’s just a friend, nothing more.

Who was this woman hugging her man as if they were the couple and not Amy and Luke

But she couldn’t stop the feeling of betrayal coursing through her veins.

You weren’t always there

But I was never given that chance. Instead, you found someone else to confide in.

Amy was there, but when she went off to the bathroom, Jessica found her way to Luke, making sure to write her number down on a torn piece of paper that she stuffed inside his jean pocket.

Their conversations had been much the same whenever he called, but if Luke was honest with himself, he did begin to lean on Jessica and enjoy their phone conversations, maybe even a little too much.

“Well, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but I was hoping you weren’t seeing her, still.” Jessica swallowed and moved forward with her courage.
“I just know if I was your girl, I’d never be away when you called. This stage in your life is important. You need the support more than anything I’m dealing with in my little civilian life.”

His mind shifted back to Jessica. There was a conversation between the two that needed to be had. It was time he broke it off with her, now that she’d shown her cards by showing up at the airport

“Who was the girl?”
Luke sighed.
“Jessica James.
Caleb’s eyes widened.
“JJ?”
“The one and only.”

It’s not like I cheated on you with her.”
Amy stared at him for a long stretch of a moment. “You did,” she said

“Why? I’ve been taking care of myself for six years, while Jessica James has ‘been there for you when you needed her,’”

“Well I couldn’t believe you were having an affair behind my back.”
“This hardly constitutes as an affair. Jesus, Amy.”
“What, just because it wasn’t physical means it’s not an affair? Newsflash Luke, people have emotional affairs all the time. You think I didn’t see the way she calmed down and melted instantly when you called her name

“But we’re not married, and since you’ve shown you can’t be faithful, marriage is not an option for us

Amy didn’t understand his plight. She wasn’t there and didn’t know the things he’d witnessed and been privy to. If it were not for Jessica, on those rare occasions, he could’ve possibly lost his mind

But to know I was sharing him? His thoughts, ideas, his time, it’s weakened me like I never thought I could be weakened

2 ⭐Story / 1⭐Hunt
I have wanted to read this book for YEARS, but it’s out of print, and I’ve been unable to find a copy anywhere. Finally, I found a link on a reddit post, so I JUMPED on it… and maybe it’s that I set up this ginormous expectation in my head, but it wasn’t really worth the wait.

First, it’s less than 100 pages and the author doesn’t really go deep. We get a couple whiffs of drama, but Luke is quickly forgiven both times with no heavy lifting. I was expecting a lot more, wannabe OW drama especially, and I thought Luke’s actions warranted more discussion than his standard I was in a bad place and made a mistake explanation. I’m going to spoiler the plot because it is out of print, in case you too are curious because it wasn’t worth all my hype. I’m not sure why I thought it was going to be yummy. But stop here if you’d like to hunt down your own copy.

Not for me. Having a friendship with other woman like he did and not giving a chance to his girlfriend to be there for him. And the reason is? Because sometimes she couldn’t answer her phone? There’s something wrong with this scenario. Emotional cheating IS cheating

Story was ok, nothing special, very short for the situation I think.
No actual physical cheating but hero cheated emotionally. Hero at war, had an emotional relationship with ow who was h's bitchy enemy in school and the town skank.
Hero shared heart to heart conversations and never told h about it. Hero continued to talk to ow even after she confessed she was in love with him, this went on for six years!! Sorry but that's a relationship!!
Ow met him at airport and was seen by h ( it should be noted H did not invite ow to meet him ). The ending very abrupt - felt like author just wanted to end story and just did but issue with H emotionally cheating did not feel finished. Hdidn't seem to fully grasp that he emotionally cheated. It would have been better to make story longer and properly flesh out the emotional impact of H's action. I did not read book 1 but after reading about the H/h from that book I think I will.

Quite short novella about a soldier who comes back home to his fiancee and she finds out he’s been calling another woman during those years because he needed support when she wasn’t available. This other woman happens to be the town bike, always going after married or engaged men.
He has a family too, but he kept calling this ow anyway.
It stinks of narcissistic tendencies. He needed the attentions of a slick and interested woman who wanted him even if he was engaged.
I wonder why he stayed away six years, is it even possible? I don’t think so. And during those six years he only called his fiancee and this ow? I couldn’t understand. The book is quite messed up and too much is swept under the carpet. He confronts ow about their relationship and tells her they are not friends anymore, I quite felt sorry for her since he,if I’m not wrong, had been calling and talking with her for six years. Meh.

This is a good story.
There is obviously from the blurb other woman drama.
There is no physical cheating but it broaches the possibility of emotionally cheating.

Jessica, the o/w is there for him on an emotional level to chat to online when his girlfriend, Amy isn't.
Which is a situation he creates by not talking it through with Amy.
I thought this was an interesting concept.
I understand Luke's POV to a point but I think due to the length of time the communication went on, 6 years and not to the knowledge of his girlfriend made it difficult to forgive.
Not only that, it's who he is communicating with. I know girls being friends with girls see each other differently to how a boy will see a girl but Jessica is not someone you want your man getting to know and even his best bud says that.
I think there is some nativity in Luke or maybe it's stupidity but I think he crossed the line. 6 years.... Makes it one that's hard to come back from.
The couple from book 1 also feature so we see how their relationship is developing.

There were a few editting errors, not many but a few words incorrect and missing"" for conversation so it was hard to know if it was dialogue or description or internal banter.

First off, this could do with editing, but aside from that I enjoyed the read. It was surprising how that issue of the other woman was addressed in such a relatable manner. That being the H is oblivious to the depth of his betrayal and the h understanding it perfectly. Those scenes were done well. The H definitely needed to grovel way more and his treatment of his 'friend' was hardly kind given he'd created the situation and since this was a short story, it was all wrapped up super quick. Also a six year separation, really that long? Doesn't seem realistic. scratch that, stupid question.

He goes to war and while there has a bad day and tries to call his girlfriend but she is not there so he calls another woman whom he starts a friendship with that lasts 6 years. He got the ow number on his going away party on a piece of paper while his girlfriend was in the bathroom and he took it allllll the wayyy to war. Why.. I've had to move across the world with my stuff in a suitcase, random pieces of paper with phone numbers are not a priority especially if you have a girlfriend. To me Luke made it easier for himself to call someone else besides his girlfriend.

6 years of calls. 6 years of knowingly leaning on someone else while hiding it from your girlfriend. If you feel like hiding something then you know that you're doing something wrong. So the excuses mean nothing because he knew that what he was doing was wrong, but he felt entitled. He's at war so its oke to talk to ow, he's at war so its oke to do whatever he wants to do 'to stay sane'. Even when he's saying sorry he makes it clear that yes what he did could be seen as wrong but he's entitled because he's at war.

He knew that the ow had expectations. He knew but still kept at it. All of this for me was great. He cheated the ow was mean and oke being the ow. I was in for an angsty emotional read. But yeah, it wasn't. The book built a nice foundation for a book and then it was last chapter time. A halfassed sorry, no mention of ow anymore and a ring later and everything is a oke. So yeah.. kinda disappointing.

My rating: 2 1/2 stars

What I liked: I liked Amy and Erin’s friendship. I also liked how Amy told Luke how she felt

What I didn’t like: Luke. He was idiot. In the beginning we get that he was talking to the ow because he needed someone to help him get through stuff but when the ow started asking questions about Amy he hesitated to answer her. It was like he had no clue that he was doing anything wrong but would say stuff like why did I not just talk to Amy or I knew ow was starting to have feelings for me (he was a walking contradiction) Especially when the ow is a woman who goes after men who have girlfriends.... he picks that woman to help him (again what an idiot)

How hot was it: 3 out 5

Triggers: Gabe is away on tour for 6 years. During that time he calls ow instead of his girlfriend to help him get through stuff. Definitely would consider this emotional cheating.

Final thoughts: This was a short fast read. My problem was it felt like the story was just cut off. I wanted more groveling from Luke. Also, the authors messed up the names of the couple at the end putting Erin’s name where Amy’s named should have been.

Eh, this was alright. It had potential to be super angsty and emotional but a few things hampered it. One, it’s a very short novella so there just wasn’t enough time to explore things properly. The characters were pretty vaguely drawn, especially the side characters, and the end made no sense to me. Amy went from feeling that she couldn’t trust Luke and like there was no future for them to squealing and saying yes when he proposed. The main reason she refused to reconcile with him was that he didn’t get why what he did was so wrong and hurtful. There’s no indication that he came to finally realize so that just didn’t gel for me. I did enjoy Luke groveling and respected Amy for refusing to accept what he’d done (before she mysteriously gets over it, that is). A very brief and non-detailed read that had potential to be so much more.

Yes, and No

I really enjoyed Amy and Luke's story. It has angst, heat, and characters that I liked reading about.
My problem, it starts out really good, and ended too fast with a wrap up that was too fast, and not enough story. I didn't really believe that Luke's character understood that what he had done was a betrayal. Six years of speaking, and being that close to another person, is an emotional affair. It was a betrayal! Then it seemed like he proposed to her as a, last minute, "hail mary."
I didn't get the impression that Jessica was going to be out of the picture. That was kind of left vague.

I'm torn because I liked it, but wish the author had written more, and taken more time to resolve their problems.
And yes, I will read the next in the series.

It is my fault, as I skim read this one, but still confused why they hadn’t seen each other in six years, other people with partners in the military are not usually kept apart this long. Hero was an ass, who didn’t really see why he did wrong, he had an emotional affair. Heroine was a fool for taking him back.

As a military spouse, I wanted to give this book a chance because it seemed relatable but it wasn't.

There's no way that you won't see or visit your partner for 6 years unless they did some undercover work. Do you mean to tell me that he never went on leave for Christmas or the holidays? Not once? He never flew her out to where he was stationed stateside during any of the time he was on active duty. He was not deployed the whole time. This made the plot unrealistic.

This MC aka Fool was a penpal with a girl who went out of her way to go after the boys in the town that were in relationships with the girls at the school. She played on the fact that her brother was in the Army as well. Amy would miss his calls and he would need an outlet to pick up the phone to call the OW and that's how their 6-year hidden relationship started.

He also went out of his way to plan a daily phone date with the heifer and knowingly hid it from Amy for 6 years. It was a standing phone date and time but told Amy's uncle to not tell her when she would miss his calls because he didn't want her to be upset when she missed his calls. This is 2018, not the early 2000s. He could've called Amy anytime throughout the day but he chose not to. He spoke to OW more than his own gf.

When he comes home he tells the OW when he would arrive and she purposely shows up and ruins the homecoming with Amy.

FMC was strong but she forgave him too quickly and he didn't grovel. He also didn't put the other woman in her place. Even the OW friends knew of their affair and it was like they saw it as a relationship because the OW kept the standing phone dates with him for 6 years and would ditch her friends for their phone calls.

Here's the issue:
He didn't know or care to realize what the issue was. He acknowledged that if he saw another man meet Amy after 6 years at the airport he would be upset but he still couldn't see why she was upset. He couldn't understand why Amy was upset because he felt he didn't cheat on her because it wasn't a physical affair. He was clueless.

The other characters were great like Uncle Charlie and they were ready to ride for Amy. However, I couldn't wrap my head around how he could be gone so long and have a full-on emotional affair with the OW as pen pals, have set time phone dates with her, and with Amy, it was hit-and-miss phone calls with her 6 years. It was as if he didn't love her because he didn't go out of his way to ensure she knew she was a priority.

The amount of spicy between the two MCs brings the stars up because his lack of grovel was ridiculous. He never put Amy's raggedy ass in her place and set her straight. She'll probably cause some mess in the next book.

I didn't really feel the angst as much, but I still did enjoy the read. Book is short 86 page and, fast pace. Luke (H) emotionally cheated on Amy (h) w/ Jessica (OW) for 6 YEARS. I don't believe he understood the depth of his betrayal at all. He just kept defending himself and making excuses for his actions, even after EVERYONE was telling him he was in the wrong.
When Caleb ask Luke, how he fixed things with Amy after she found out about OW... He said: " I apologized, I was sincere about it, gave her roses, then waxed that ass." This 👈 was before Amy found out it was Jessica and the extent of his emotional affair w/her.
They do get their HEA w/ them engaged 💍 ... I wanted to read— Wait no more: Mariah and Micha story ... but I can't find it anywhere 😕

The novella was going well, the angst of his emotional affair hitting hard. However, the most important confrontation was cut short, abbreviated anticlimactic and most importantly nowhere near fleshed out...yet he then. proposes and its like it never happened. This followed by even more abrupt finale.
Fared well initially, then such a disappointment! 3 stars for an compelling idea\ introduction.

For me, he cheated. You don't get emotionally involved with another woman while on deployment. I would want to be the one he relied on. And that airport scene. Yikes! But I do know lot's of ex soldiers and unfortunately men and women both are known for their infidelity. Not to assume there aren't any good one's because there are

Short book too short
Some angst, but then everything is OK

Her boyfriend is returning from the military. She goes to meet him at the airport she see him and goes to run into his arms and another girl gets to him first, giving him hugs. While he was overseas he was calling and corresponding with this other girl because he couldn’t get into touch with his girlfriend.

Luke fully acknowledged that he had emotional affair but didn’t see anything wrong with that because Amy wasn’t available when he needed her. Then he wanted to keep “the darkness away from her”🙄
All of this was just an excuse that was never fully addressed. If presented with the opportunity to do that again, best believe he will!
