Kat O'Hara returns home penniless, heartbroken and without a job. When the magical Landers sisters hire her to run their new Enchanted Cafe little do they suspect that a gruesome murder is about to take place in the small town of Kissing Bridge Mountain. Things bubble over at the big chili cook-off when a crockpot goes missing and a body is found.
I admit that it’s the cover of a book that gets my attention. Well, I’m happy the cover of this book caught my eye. I love the Landers Sisters, Carol and Ethel. I want to be their friend. What can I say about Kat, she cracked me up at the very beginning of the story and she just keeps rolling with the punches. The characters in this story were certainly an interesting bunch and were fun to try to figure out. There were a couple of good lessons in this story also. I hadn’t read any of Linda West’s books, but I will definitely read more now. It’s always fun to find a new to you author and you really enjoy.
A strong, quick paced cozy. I really enjoyed this story about a magical family and friends cafe. The murder mystery had a strong plot and numerous suspects for the reader to concentrate on. There were lots of quirks with the main character and I secretly think Kat may drink just a little to much, but she was loveable and realistic. There were numerous yummy recipes for the reader to enjoy making included. We had an adorable car and a hunky LEO included. It was a wonderful combination of friends and magical family members that made up the population of this quirky setting.
The cover drew me to the book itself. Kat O’Hara is back in town after she is deceived my her ex in Paris. She needs to get a job so she works for the Lander sisters in the bakery and their new Cafe they are opening.
At the chili cook-off they do win the blue ribbon like they wanted to but in the process Carol is accused of murdering her ex fiancé. Can the bakery crew solve this murder?
Love the twists and turns you think it might be someone and bam not them. I never saw the ending coming. It was great. The characters were funny and interesting to get to know. I wonder If Jamie will make a move.
I chose 5 stars because, it is funny , has a good pace, some twist and turns, and a little magic. I would recommend this book to anyone who like humor and a mystery.
10 stars!!!! I just read this new author, boy what happens at a chili cook off. People need to learn how to treat people, they never know what comes back around to them. Bragging about what you have can get you in so much trouble by the wrong kind people jealous of your good life. Kat O'Hara and her aunt Ethel are a great detective duo getting Carol out of a jam being framed for murder. You got to read this book. I didn't sleep much, had to find out what happened next. You won't be disappointed!!!!!!
The Lancet sisters are in deep when one is arrested for murder. Kat is back and just my personal opinion that a little more could have been included in why her marriage was a sham. Great characters, real page turner.
3 1/2 stars. Cute and a fun read. The magic is minimal and only used to try to get some characters to tell the truth, not a major plot point. It does lead to an amusing scene. The mystery is solid with a number of suspects and some surprising twists but the culprit wasn't a big surprise.
The characters make this story shine. They are down to earth and relatable. Most people, except for the murder victim, are nice. You do not come away with the feeling that none of the characters are likable and you don't know who to root for. However, if you read this book without reading any of the Love on Kissing Bridge Mountain, which I did, you feel like you have stepped into an ongoing series even though is book one. It was easy enough to figure everything out, so you don't have to read the other series but you definitely feel like walking into a conversation that has already started.
5 Star review Death by Crockpot (A Kissing Bridge Cozy Mystery) by Linda West
Audio Review:
A new author to me although I have listened to a couple of cozy mystery books narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya previously
The narrator did a fabulous job and certainly kept me engaged as I listened to Death by Crockpot and can I just say I love the tittle?
When Kat O’Hara returns to Kissing Bridge (another great name) she has no idea of the danger and mystery she is about to encounter.
This was a book filled with intrigue, danger, suspense, twists and turns and was altogether a thoroughly enjoyable listen. In fact I will be on the look out for more books by this author as soon as I can.
A totally fun, cozy little mystery... Full of cooking and good humor... Jennifer Jill Araya performed a deftly, adroit job as she traipsed though the pages of the book... without stepping in the spilled chili or blood. Simply, a perfect bit of narration! You're gonna want to grab the audio book and put your earbuds in, and your feet up... for a perfect afternoon getaway!
PS. My husband read this review, and now he wants to listen to Death by Crockpot, too!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
I came across this book sitting on my Kindle and was in the mood for a cozy mystery, ala Murder She Wrote, so I dove right in...
The Good: I really enjoyed most of the characters in this book. The Landers sisters especially made me smile and I would love to see more books with them and their family as the focus. I loved the small town feel to the book. It felt like someplace that I might live. Heck, if you're around my site enough, you'll know that I love recipes and crock pots.
The Bad: The author has a serious love of adjectives and describing things, even when they don't need to be described. For example, there's a UPS driver that she describes and he's nothing more than a blip in the book as he drops off 5 boxes full of crock pots. The author also makes some odd formatting choices, such as putting a recipe smack dab in the middle of the book and then having an entire recipe section in the back. There are editing and formatting errors galore, as well, which really threw me away from the story. The main character talks about being in France and how she was drunk most of the time she was there...and then I'm not sure one chapter went by when she wasn't drinking and she seemed almost proud of the fact that she was somewhat of a lush. She also mentions twice that she's a writer. The first time, I honestly thought it was a typo and the author meant waiter. The second time wasn't until chapter 33 and at no point in the book does this information have any relevance.
The Summary: I know I seem like I'm being pretty harsh here, but I guess I just have expectations when it comes to things that could be fixed, should have been caught, but haven't. There's no excuse for something like the font size changing randomly for a few pages and then changing back and then changing again. As for the story itself, it could use some work. When the author contradicts her own story, there's a problem and that's something that an editor should catch. If a casual reader caught it, a good editor should have as well. I really wanted to like this book. I loved most of the characters (the main character was a turn off for me), the setting, and even the premise of the story. I loved the references to things like Murder She Wrote and taking to ones bed. I may give this author another chance, but I'll go in with lower expectations.
I read a lot of cozy mysteries and while this had the familiar theme of a family member or good friend being mistakenly charge with murder and the story being about solving the crime and proving that the initial accused did not do it, this was a new and amusing and interesting take. I honestly did not figure out the culprit until the big reveal. Lots of twists and turns with red herrings. A mark of a good mystery to me is not being able to guess who! The only thing that was a bit distracting were a few writing errors. Not a lot,but enough that I could see the book needed another editing. But other than that, I love the series and will be reading more! This book has a bit of everything, a touch of the paranormal, a touch of romance, a strong female sleuth with a strong supporting cast of characters, what,s not to like.
Kat O’Hare. returns Kissing Bridge to live with her dad and five cats. She goes to work for the Landers sister who are getting ready to open the Enchanted Cozy Cafe next to their bakery. Before they open there is a chilie cook off. Carol Landers ex is found sitting beside his body with her bright red crockpot in her hands. Her prize wing chilie all over his body. She is promptly arrested. It is up to Kat and Ethel to find the real killer.
The Lander sisters prove that 70’s is just a number a number and can run circles around anyone younger.
Small town locals solve mysteries while cooking up prize-winning foods
Three elderly sisters with a magical cookbook work with their young friend/employee to solve the murder of the town's least liked weAlthy man as well as the murder of his very young "wife". It is a delightful, funny romp with a touch of Charmed. The first book of a new cozy series. Highly recommended. Great job Ms. West.
After the part of introducing all the characters, story started to move along. Not giving anything away, the killer isn't the one who you think it is. The story is engaging and the character lovable. All in all A great little read. Looked for the next one but couldn't find it. Great reading everyone!
The book’s title caught my interest first. The description was enticing. The story was entertaining and funny. I appreciated the heroine not being a love struck ninny trying to solve a mystery.
I enjoyed this book. This is my first introduction to the kissing bridge community and what an introduction it was, It is a nice fun cozy mystery, with great characters and unusual cats. The sisters are called the magical Landers sisters but not really sure if they are witches or not because other than very special sandwiches which were made and a few times a magical cook book is mentioned, nothing else comes of it and no spells are cast. Oh and is the main character a witch because she is very handy with a bottle top? The mystery was good and did keep you guessing. But it is the characters themselves that really made the book, they are quirky enough to make it entertaining and a series to look out for in the future. Kat is entering her chilli in the big chilli cook-off and her team has a good chance of winning this year. That is until one of her team mate and her crockpot goes missing before the judges announces the winner. Running low of food to serve the judges Kat goes looking for her only to nearly get attacked. Next time she goes looking for her friend she takes the law with her and that when they find her friend standing over the dead body of her ex fiance holding the murder weapon and missing crockpot. Kat doesn't believe her friend could have killed him but the police don't hold her beliefs and arrest her. Can Kat find the missing letter, the letter that made her friend go running to her ex side? More importantly can Kat prove she didn't kill him? It seems the dead man had made a number of enemies lately. In clued in that list is even his own sister and nephew. But could they have killed him over money? The will reading doesn't help much as he left everything to his new wife and when she gets killed things get really complicated. Will eating some special sandwiches help Kat get to the bottom of both murders in time for the new cafe to open? I liked the narrator, she is so bubbly that you just can't help but enjoy the story with her reading it
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... but it mostly was an age of foolishness. Kat O’Hara has returned home to Kissing Bridge, Vermont nursing a broken heart. She is lucky to receive a job from family friends, the Landers sisters. They are opening a new restaurant adjacent to their popular bakery and have a position for Kat in the cafe.
The ladies enter a big chili cook-off held at the nearby town of Six Pines in order to promote the cafe. They are sure they will win, but have no idea that they will find themselves embroiled in a murder investigation.
I wanted to like this book. I was drawn to it from the cover and the description sounded interesting. I listened to the audiobook version of the book and the reader was very distracting to me. She frequently made it difficult to differentiate between characters. I should have known when a character was described as having dish-washer blonde hair that I should just stop listening.
I found the main character annoying, but I’m not sure if it was the writing or the reading. She comes across as a screechy whiner who likes to drink. The story would have been fine without her, instead focusing on the Landers sisters as the protagonists. Their characters were better developed than Kat. In fact, they were the main source of any entertainment in the book.
The setting has potential but there is little to no description to set the scene. Like all cozies it takes place in a small town, or in this case, two small towns. I have know idea what is supposed to make Kissing Bridge special.
I was 80% of the way through the book when finally I found interest in the plot. That occurred when one of the Landers sisters became a more prominent character and led the amateur investigation of the murder.
I do not recommend this book. It is a poorly executed tale of a murder taking place in one city and being solved by people from the neighboring city.
( Format : Audiobook ) "Nothing motivates like money." This is one of those books to read, preferably tucked up somewhere cozy, with a nice cup of tea and a big bag of treats. It's comfort reading, very light and inconsequential, nothing to challenge the reader, but still fun. The main character is a sweet but silly woman just returned to Missing Bridge after being fooled into believing she'd been married when it was just a joke - or something like that. Broken hearted, and feeling foolish, she started working in a bakery run by the talented Landed sisters, trying to outlook them by adding alcohol to everything. There's a chilli bake competion, a new cafe to open, the start up of a book cleb, interesting characters to get to know, and loads and loads of sweet and savoury food to eat. Oh yes, there's a murder of two as well. Mostly written in the first person, the narrator Jennifer Jill Araya performs her character well, with good pacing and an emotional lilt to her voice.
Warning. Do not read this if hungry or on a diet! However, unlike the print version of Death by Crockpot, as reduced from comments in other reviews, the Audible version does not carry recipes of the numerous food items mentioned. What a pity. Several of them sounded really tasty, in particular the little (special) sandwiches.
My thanks to the rights holder Death by Crockpot, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was fun, it was silly, it was delicious and enjoyable and recommended for lighthearted reading.
I originally wasn't thrilled with it, but I eventually found this book cute. This was the first book of a new series and I felt I was dropped off in the middle of a story line I wasn't familiar with, like I had missed a first book or something. The story needed some better editing and did not flow well. I found myself going back in the book to figure out who was who and what was going on.
Perhaps it was just me but I didn't care for the main character of Kat, it seems all she does is drink beer, talk about drinking beer, adding alcohol to something, or how lousy her ex was without us finding out a glimmer of a back story. Although it may not be clear from the cover or title it was supposed to have some magical touch to the sisters, but there was only one section at the end that even came close it that.
I like to connect to the characters and I couldn't do that with these. I did like the spunky sisters, Carol and Ethel Landers and I think I would have liked them a lot. I liked the small town feel of the story and the details of the town and people.
I have to admit, I did not quite expect the ending, that was a pleasure. It seemed so wrapped up as to who the murderer was, but slight twist.
This book has been on my to-read shelf for a couple of years, but I've put off reading it because I'm too cheap to buy a Kindle book by a new-to-me author. This fall, though, I stumbled into one of those free trials of Kindle Unlimited and found this book included in KU, so I borrowed it and here we are.
Until I read a couple of the reviews here on GR, I didn't know this book is a spin-off from another series. That is probably why I felt like I stepped into the middle of an ongoing story, even though this is the first book in this series. The characters who appear to be carried over from the original series are a decent group of people, but I just couldn't bring myself to care much about them.
The murder victim was not a nice person by any stretch of the imagination, so it was hard to make myself care about who the killer was. Every time I thought I'd figured it out, something came up to change my mind. The actual culprit *was on my list of suspects almost from the moment they first appeared in the story, so the reveal wasn't much of a surprise.
There is only one more book in this series, but I doubt that I will read it... unless I get another free KU offer and can't find anything else to read.
I enjoyed the cozy mystery aspect of the story, but was really thrown off by a few small details.
Literally, I would be cruising along and enjoying the book and stumble over some of these blips of information. They were oddly placed and awkwardly worded--sort of as if the West forgot what her character was like and decided to toss in a reminder...
I still really enjoyed the story, but it could have been more enjoyable sans the above.
Kat comes back to her small town and works with the Landers sisters in their bakery/café. Kat drinks a lot, seems proud of it, and sneaks cigarettes whenever she can. There were several snippets in the book that were drawn out too long - doing wheelies in her truck in the parking lot - that didn't add anything except to show her attitude or to introduce a character (that may or may not appear again). I liked the Landers sisters and the well-developed sense of being in the small town, but it was too cutesy for me in places. The murder wasn't even the main focus of the book.
About the book: Kat O'Hara returns home penniless, heartbroken and without a job. When the magical Landers sisters hire her to run their new Enchanted Cafe little do they suspect that a gruesome murder is about to take place in the small town of Kissing Bridge Mountain. Things bubble over at the big chili cook-off when a crockpot goes missing and a body is found.
Very good, I'm looking forward to the next in this series.
Audible:Kat comes home from an embarressing situation. She is working for the Landers sisters in their bakery and soon to be cafe.Chaos and murder comes to town and it takes Kat to figure it all out.A fun, cozy mystery.I liked it a lot! Jennifer Jill Araya was a fine narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
This was fun. Another title my mom had on her Kindle that caught my eye. Pretty much read it in a day. Nice story that has a goofy main character who isn't squeaky clean. Supporting actors are fun & colorful. Plot was believable yet unpredictable. I'm looking forward to reading Death by Rolling Pin. Hopefully West keeps the momentum going.
This was such a cute cozy murder mystery book and I think I have discovered a new fav book niche- food mysteries! Apparently there are SO MANY out there and I can’t wait to read them all, including the next in this series.
The only criticism I have is spelling/ word use errors were enough to be distracting. Other than that I thought it was cute, funny and the ending I didn’t see coming!
I really enjoyed this book, though I believe I read the book before it was re-edited. Even though there were some mistakes and repetition, I loved the characters by the time I finished the book and I hope there will be a sequel.
Very enjoyable exciting story. Characters likeable, loyal, warm and eccentric. Could have had a bit more paranormal for my taste but a little is better than none. Plot was well thought out and flowed well. Conclusion was very satisfying.
