For centuries the small port town of Points Worth has been able to communicate with the ocean in its own language. But the water has just gone silent and its last word has shaken those able to translate it. A knowledge of sea-script won’t be enough to mend the broken relationship between man and the deep. Gil, a young nautical linguist, will have to break rules and search the past to discover why the ocean ceased its tides—or had them stolen.
Points Worth is a novelette set in the world of Kingdom of Ruins, and is a prequel to the first book in the series.
Points Worth grabbed my attention right away. The plot of the story is intriguing and the characters are very well-developed. I felt myself being drawn in from the beginning. The fantasy world that D.C. Marino describes made me feel like I was there with the main character, Gil.
It was a short novelette introducing the "Kingdom of Ruins" series. It's an exciting adventure where the inhabitants depend on the sea to sustain and bless them. Gil, a junior linguist, isn't willing to accept the seas last message. He feels that there is more to the message.
I can't wait to see how his adventure continues. I loved Gil's bravery to attempt to do what no one else would. I look forward to reading more about him.
I received a copy from Celebrate Lit and voluntarily chose to review it.
"Points Worth" is a prequel novelette to "Kingdom of Ruins". It drew me in right from the beginning and made me want to know more about what was going on. I got frustrated for Gil that no one would listen to him. The idea that the sea not only communicated with people, but also was a sentient being intrigued me. The story was a very quick read being only 31 pages long, but I felt it was well written and a lot happens in those few pages. It definitely whetted my appetite for the first official book in the series. I can't wait to read it!
For being so short, I found this story to be surprisingly enjoyable. To be honest, I read it because a friend of mine said she loved it, but I had low expectations. It took me two or three pages to get into the story, but once I did, I found the story fascinating, the author’s voice pleasant, and the main character likable. I’m looking forward to reading the novel that follows!
Being a prequel, this novelette sets the stage for many adventures involving sea-script, oceans, myths, linguists, and mysterious happenings. I was left wanting the next novel in my hands.
TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2018 Points Worth Short but very intriguing. Will Gil be able to accomplish his task? He knew what he had to do but opposition was before him. He was determined to find the answers.
Have you ever known for sure that something just wasn't right? Did you listen to your instinct? Or did you go with the flow and keep quiet? Gil didn't have seniority on his side. He was a junior nautical linguist. But he felt driven to discover the truth. He was willing to risk what he worked for to save others.
Enjoyed the story....wish it was a little longer.
I received this free to review.

About the Author Dcmarino autho picD.C. Marino is a dedicated reader of history books and fantasy novels, both of which occupy an equal amount of space on her bookshelves. But it wasn’t until she realized how one breathed life into the other that she became addicted to finding the intersections of the real world and the fairy story. Still more: what those intersections about us as a creative, curious people. Kingdom of Ruins is her debut novel.
Guest post from D.C. Marino Hi Everyone! I’m so excited to celebrate the release of Points Worth with you! To start, I’ll share a funny secret: this little novelette was never in the plan. The idea came at the last moment, at the suggestion of my publisher. I had never intended to write a prequel to the Kingdom of Ruins series, but when I began fleshing out this small story, it took on a personality I couldn’t ignore. Not only did I fall in love with the sea-salt setting and gutsy characters, but Points Worth is now planned to continue as a mini-series of novellas, each one to be released between the full-length novels! Gil, the main character and hero, is who I blame for the speed of my commitment to this storyline. He inspires me. Calamity has befallen his small port town and fear is driving even the wisest of the townsfolk to make dangerous decisions. Instead of swallowing the easiest explanation for the disaster, Gil goes in search of the truth against one of the most powerful men in the town. He’s scrappy, inventive and knows his history. Though born in the hills, he’s a natural seafarer. I wanted to keep following him right off the page. And so, his story has only just begun to sail the unknown ocean. On the flip side, the Kingdom of Ruins series takes place on land. But this isn’t a default setting. The land is a character in itself and interacts with those that live upon its soil. It even takes sides in war. This same concept was extended to the sea in Points Worth. Which is appropriate, as they are part of the same world. In fact, the town of Points Worth is only a few days’ ride away from where the main novel takes place. Which leads me to the last thing I wanted to share with you. Gil will show up as a supporting character in one of the main novels. I love this because, though the reader will know Gil very well, the main characters in Kingdom of Ruins will not. You’ll suddenly see Gil from another’s perspective, which should be interesting and sometimes comical. I will say no more. Land and sea must tell the rest of the story. Thank you for coming! I hope you enjoy the ocean-air and the adventure it inspires! D.C. Fantasy Sometimes fantasy can seem too improbable and distant for the reader to make a connection. However, Points Worth catches your breath from the moment you begin reading. It is different, fresh and new and had me journeying to this small port town in a rush.
“The ocean was known to hold back a day of tides when differences of opinion needed to be settled.” What a sentence to draw you in. How could an ocean hold back a day of tides? What differences of opinion could an ocean have? “The water spoke in a low, distrustful tone.” Say what? Tell me more…
The language I loved the flow of this novelette, the descriptive language especially and what is a “nautical linguist?” My mind said dolphins, but D. C. Marino is a linguist earthquake when it comes to describing her fantasy world. As a writer, she explodes on the pages delving out line after line of action. “And what was the final script from the Caletain Sea?” Mystified? So was I, and I got to read the answer! Oh, the joy. I want more than this novelette.
Coming soon Fortunately, there is more, (phew, I wipe my brow in relief) you can’t leave me like this. No, really there is a longer book, this is just a taster. The riddle has just begun, and I can’t wait to continue the adventure.
The sea talks? You have to be kidding me; it does in this book! Keep talking I want to know more.
Would I recommend this novelette? I did not like this… No, I loved it. Would I recommend it, I totally would, especially if you like fantasy and something completely different. Its thirty-one pages packed with pieces of a wider jigsaw will make you want to know more, well IMO anyway.
"Points Worth" by D.C. Marino is a fast paced 31 pages and is a novelette set in the world of Kingdom of Ruins and is a prequel to the first book in the series. "Points Worth" is now planned to continue as a mini-series of novellas, each one to be released between the full-length novels. "Points Worth" is a fun read and really drew me into the story from the beginning. The ending really makes you want to keep reading and not have to wait for the first book, I know patience is a virtue, but it is so hard to wait on books. I really can't wait to read how Gill's fight for the truth turns out. These pages have me already cheering for Gill and booing one of the most powerful man in the town.
"Points Worth" by D.C. Marino is a tale about the sea stopping it's tides and one man's search to discover why.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
What a hook! In only 31 pages, this little book will grab you and make you desperate to get your hands on whatever follows! I am thankful to have received this complimentary ARC and am so intrigued to read this debut author's full-length novel, which I hope is coming out very soon!
I was completely fascinated by the idea of the sea communicating with people, and my inner nerd rejoiced to have the main character be a linguist! I can't wait to read more from this fantasy world!
An intriguing prequel featuring believable characters, a riveting storyline, vivid descriptions, and highly stylized wordsmithery. The connection and communication between man and nature is fascinating; an idea that truly grabs the heart. Here is a quick read that is well to enjoyed repeatedly - certainly worth every revisit!
As a new fan of the fantasy genre, D.C. Marino is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite authors, who certainly has a 5+ winner with this one!
I really enjoyed reading this novelette that is getting us ready for the start of this new series. This made me want to learn more about this kingdom. I look forward to reading more about the characters and seeing how the sea talks to them. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
Points Worth may just be my favorite place in the KoR world! The idea of speaking to sea and the currents being a friend, and winds chatty, it’s kind of amazing! I can’t wait for the 2nd installment of this novelette series!!! And Gil! Ugh!!! Who doesn’t love a sailor?! No seriously, send them my way, I’ll have a chat with them!
If I could describe this in one word, it would be original. This was a REALLY interesting read. The storyline is unique, intriguing, and left me wanting more. I absolutely love the narrative about the sea being able to communicate with Points Worth. I cannot wait for Kingdom of Ruins!
I WANTED TO LOVE IT!!!! If I could do half stars, I’d give it 4.5. Points Worth has an incredibly cool premise … geographical elements can talk, they are sentient, they have “personalities”. What a cool idea. When a special type of paper is dipped into the ocean, the ocean water will form into special writing that can be translated by people who have learned to read it. How cool is that? Can you imagine what history we could learn just by being able to communicate with the ocean. And somehow the ocean can understand human speech. Guess it’s been around long enough to learn it; if it could. The settings were beautiful. There were no glaring mistakes in writing. I know it’s an intro to a series and it intrigues me. Nature’s elements have stopped working together, people are stranded on the ocean, because wind and waves have stopped. It’s very intriguing. What I found not so intriguing was the people. I thought they were kind of flat and two dimensional. I didn’t feel much for them, not the main character, not anyone else. They seem to exist as tools to describe a cool setting and story premise. It’s the start of a series, I will give the series a chance for sure. It wasn’t horrible, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. I received a copy of this as a gift, with now obligations attached.
This short (thirty page) novelette introduces what I believe is going to be a great fantasy series. Through Gil, readers learn about linguists, sea-script, the personification of the sea, the resistance to older interpretations, and the beginnings of a questionable alliance.
D. C. Marino pulled me in from the first paragraph and held my interest as I followed Gil through his discovery and consequent difficulty finding someone to believe (or simply listen to) his findings.
An excellent prequel to Kingdom of Ruins (available July 26, 2018). I can’t wait to see what mysteries, secrets, and world building Marino has in store for us.

The saying, "Good things come in small packages," is what this treasure of a book is. I love the sea and all the mysteries that can be found there. The waves seems to talk to you as it crashes on the rocks. What happens when the sea becomes quiet? Gil is a wonderful character who loves the sea and feels it talking to him. When he discovers that the sea is in trouble, he can't find anyone to believe him.
Gil wants to warn others but they dismiss him as a silly person who doesn't know what he is talking about. I loved how the author took us on a journey to find out what Gil could do to help the sea. Will he be able to get anyone to listen to him? I'm thrilled to know that there will be more installments in this exciting adventure . I look forward to the next book as I am left intrigued by what the sea is trying to communicate.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
I really enjoyed this quick little novella. The whole idea of the Ocean speaking to humans is cool to me. The fact that humans had upset the Ocean was intriguing and pulled me in right away. I really liked the author's setup for this series. Gil was a smart guy, I mean he picked up on an error when the 'experts' didn't. He was persistent and didn't just give up when he was told no.
I look forward to seeing the book the author has setup with this prequel and where they will take the story.
It was a 4/5 for me. I will be reading the next book.
Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
The book left me wondering when the next book comes out. This is a novella that comes before book one. Gil watches over the ocean and studies it. There is men at sea to save but can they? Gil is a special guy, and caring person. This is a fantasy genre and not the kind I usually read so I had a time getting into it but once I did then it ended. It does seem like it will be a good series and this is an excellent start to it. I received an complementary copy of the book from the author and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post an positive review, this is my own opinion.
My Review Points Worth is a prequel to a series. With it being a prequel it is a short read. I don't think I have ever read a short story that was a prequel before so I found this concept quite different. This is a fantasy type story. The Ocean speaking to humans was a little different. It is definitely a unique story.Kingdom of Ruins will be the next book to follow this story. Disclaimer : I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own honest ones.
As a rule, novelettes aren’t my things. Give me a story I can sink my teeth into. But as a teaser for a new series, you couldn’t really ask for more than Points Worth delivers. The writing is engaging, the plot moves forward at the same time as introducing you to the world of the story, and you get a strong sense that this world has a rich and fascinating history waiting to be discovered.
I love the idea that the sea is a character in its own right and the thought the author has given to ways in which the sea might communicate. It promises to be a unique world, and I’m looking forward to visiting it again soon.
I received a copy of this story from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
This short novelette packs a big punch. I was immediately drawn to Gil and his unique ability to communicate with the ocean. This sets the tone for what I anticipate to be a fun, wonderful fantasy series that I cannot wait to dive into! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
