This is a prequel story written to commemorate the release of the Detective Pikachu video game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems!
As a self-proclaimed great detective, Pikachu can somehow understand what people are saying. His only wish is to meet someone who can understand him in the same way.
One day, an Eevee comes to the great Detective Pikachu and asks him to find the culprit who messed up the yard at its home!
Detective Pikachu begins with a Pikachu who is a a detective getting a new care. This Pikachu recently lost his partner, but it's very unique. So, it takes on some cases from some other Pokemon.
This book was a pretty short children's story. It was cute and had interesting humor along with some interesting mystery aspects as well. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Hubby grabbed the Kindle version of this book from the Nintendo Life website. Since it's a short story, I thought I'd check it out right away.
Pikachu is a great detective. He lives in Ryme City, which is a place full of Pokémon, humans and good food. For some reason, he understands what people are saying but they can't understand him.
A few months before his human partner, Harry, went missing and so did Pikachu's memory. So now he's staying with a friend of Harry's, while trying to find him. But in the meantime, he decides to start his own agency. And when Eevee asks him to help figure out who ruined its partner's yard, Pika takes on the case...
This is so adorable. The story's quite simple, the writing is easygoing and easy to get into. It was nice to see how Pokémon and humans live together. The illustrations are gorgeous, and I got a kick out of how nicely different types of Pokémon were thrown into the mix to create a cute mystery! And that Pikachu loves a good cup of coffee is hilarious.
It's obviously aimed at kids, and I think they'll get a kick out of how this short tale complements their DS game. But anyone can enjoy this because it's a super fast and fun read.
The book introduces the titular Pikachu who understands both Pokemon and humans, he was the Pokemon partner of the great detective Goodman, but the man has went missing and Pikachu was left in the care of his partner's friend.
Unable to speak human language and his partner's friend don't understand his specialness, Pikachu opened his own detective agency, the book follows his first case. and I assume the game follows what happens just after that.
Through the story many Pokemon appear, and in my opinion the writer(s) took care in their characterization, they're simple animals you'd find in the usual children story and you can imagine the Pokemon in the main game series doing/saying the same if put in their situation.
What I like the most is D. Pikachu personality, he knows he's smarter than other Pokemon and thinks he's smarter than humans too, but he's easily distracted by small things especially food, which makes the story narration funnier as it's told from his perspective.
His line of thought is clearly a mess, but what makes the story good is that it's still easy to follow as you read. This reminded me again how can a professional narrator make the story not only readable but interesting too!!
The mystery isn't really challenging. Solving the case with him wasn't that hard, I still think it'd make a good children mystery story because while I reached the solution of the case before it was told, I can say it will make a child feel smart if they discovered it as fast.
With only 25 pages, I read it in two short sittings, A Good Read!!
probably was Kindle Unlimited or would be but think it's permafree, the next one The Great Detective Pikachu: Collection 1 (A Pokemon Story) is ku, reading it next, and then there are 5 more, and some diary of {different ones} but not into pokemon that much, more about detective type. It starts talking about missing Partner Harry Goodman...who doesn't get mentioned again, but instead starts with detective agency, makes no sense.

It's okeh for a game tie-in, but it may miss the mark for your kids.
This book was intended to be a prequel for the Detective Pikachu game. It was originally based on a physical promotional book that came out in Japan in 2016, but was released as an ebook for a limited time last year prior to the 3DS game's release in America.
The art is adorable. The story is slight, but cute. However, as a translated book, it lacks style. Instead of a classical, hard-boiled, pulp noir story, we have a cutesy story about Pikachu drinking coffee and working as a Pokémon detective for free. He investigates a crime that young readers should be able to solve on their own. A few pages later, the story is over. There's just not much to it. Young Douglas would've found it disappointing.
The book is no longer available for download from Kobo Books, iBooks, or Kindle, but young readers won't really miss anything. Pokémon collectors, however, might.
Update: Young Douglas would have found this book lacking, but my young daughter says the book was adorable and that she loved it.
A nice little prequel short story to help pump up for the Detective Pikachu game. Detective Pikachu is charming and funny as a character. Can't wait to experience the game. Wouldn't mind more short stories. I would love this as a comic book series of issues.
I loved that this is a prequel to the game! Since I’ve already started the game, I read this in Pikachu’s voice. It’s not necessary for the game, but it is a cute supplement.
A fun and quick read about Detective Pikachu solving his first case alone. It was fun. The mystery wasn’t difficult to solve from the reader’s POV, but it was fun and a free read.
This sort of book is probably better intended for new readers. It's very simple and there isn't much to it. Fine sort of free book for a kid. And I'll leave it at that.
