Rooked: A Twisted Suspense

Exposing those closest to you could be fatal. . .Despite her desire for control, Ara Hopkins has always felt like a pawn—constantly being maneuvered by those surrounding her. Carrying a riddled past of abandonment by her mother, a jealous step-sister and exploitation by men she was supposed to be able to trust, Ara craves a social-media-certified life. So, when she meets her husband, a New York congressman’s son, she believes she’s finally won her game. Secure in a life her mother would approve of—and having firmly shut the door on her chaotic and miscalculated past—Ara feels she’s thriving. Until the night her husband is murdered. Thrust into a game of deceit and lies, Ara realizes that nothing is as it seems and that the past can quickly return to the present. The facade crumbles as relationships are tested and family boundaries crossed. Faced with losing it all, she discovers what a person is really capable of. Because in this game of life, it's either rook or be rooked. An intricately braided plot with unforeseeable twists and a sucker-punch ending, Rooked is a captivating thriller that shatters all perceptions.

I did not realize how much I had missed the suspense as a genre. Good read all the way to the end.

Told from different characters, a who done it that have the police constantly questioning the widow. Do they have their eyes on the right person. Thoroughly enjoyed.

A whodunnit with multiple layers. The author patiently analyzes the suspects one at a time; your internal detective works overtime trying to evaluate the probabilities. Unfortunately, the book is sloppily written in places, and there are times it is difficult to discern who is speaking, making the reader work too hard.

Good read

This was a fun read with a lot of action and some ambitious plot points. This is definitely an author to keep an eye out for. There were several moments where the writing was really unique and profound and others where it felt a bit cliche, but overall a good read.

This isn't a good review of this book, so if you want to read this, then you might want to skip this review. This book needs to be edited and republished. So many confusing parts in the storyline. The connection between the title and the plot remains doesn't go with the storyline itself. Who got rooked? The protagonist? The police? You shouldn't have to be a chess player to get it.
The knowledge of police procedure seemed to be as deep as the cop shows she refers to in the book. I mean in the beginning, we are shown the murder; by the end of the book, it was something different. The writing lacked depth and richness and complexity which might be explained by the author's youth. The characters were poorly delineated. Had no idea what any of them looked like; mostly they were clichés. I could never figure out who to root for as most of the characters were not just dumb and so unlikeable, but downright stupid. The mother was a harridan, the stepsister a horror, Ara was all over the place - was she a victim or a manipulator? And, no, this didn't create suspense, just confusion. I got whiplash trying to figure out the relationship between the stepsisters: one minute they are devoted, the next they are toxic. The plot was murky at best. Very disappointed. Maybe the worst thing I've read in quite a while. You never know if you will like a book until you read it, unfortunately for me I regret reading it. Is amazing how often we criticize books we read and leave reviews but do not look at our writing, what a shame.

I really liked this book, was wholly engaged from the start. It was well written, drama and intrigue throughout, just the kind of book I've been loving to read lately.

Ara has married well for herself, snagging the son of a congressman whose family has power and influence. She has struggled with her own self worth due to an absentee and at times verbally abusive mom as well as a stepsister who claims to be her best friend but who Ara learns betrayed her consistently during their adult life.

The story begins with Ara discovering the body of her murdered husband. The police focus on her as a suspect, as well as the stepsister and also a detective, Lane, who is clearly in love with Ara. There is also an obsessed psychiatrist who treated Ara 10 years earlier and had sexual relations while she was his patient and only 17!

There was lots to unpack and I think the author did it well. Definitely a great read and I look forward to her next book!

Like the idea but meh on suspense

A bit confusing from the start. Not a good thing, as the most important parts of the story seemed to lie there. Had to reread the beginning of the story again because the key details got lost in the internal dialogue of the main character. There was a lot of rambling throughout the story. Tough to overcome. Liked the main character but wanted more show than tell. The writing was uneven and the chapters were inconsistent in length. Of course, the last chapter was a long one to wrap things up. I liked the idea but it wasn’t one that I will recall or remember fondly now that I have finished reading it.

Really great novel with the most wild plot twists. Every character was so complexly written and I would audibly gasp every time something crazy happened, which was a lot of times. Couple slow parts are in there, but other than that really smooth read.
