Lyc-O Factor

Twenty years ago, the Trifold virus was created to help cure the incurable, but then it mutated, killing millions. The survivors are either drug addicted or separated into two classifications: the Lyc-O negatives and the Ly-O positives. The positives think themselves superior, and when a negative finds themselves alone -- they disappear without a trace.

Banding together, the negatives desperately try to avoid capture, foraging and scavenging where they can for food and supplies. Blamed for the capture of her partner, Nickel Owens must put aside her own pain to survive with only her partner's best friend, Silver, and a young girl named Ivy. After further betrayal, she has no choice but to take on Logan Halstead, the oppressive regime's leader, herself.

Lyc-O Factor is a short book that has a very fast pace to it. When I opened it on my Kindle, it told me the average read time is roughly 3.5 hours for this story. I would agree, due to its length and pacing, it's a very quick read, which is kind of nice after reading some lengthy books lately.

Lyc-O Factor is a story of a post-apocalyptic Southern US where groups of people band together in order to survive. I love post-apocalyptic stories because they're so varied, but in most of them, I find a fairly common theme of some kind of disease run rampant in society that completely wrecks lives and destroys governments. Lyc-O Factor does not disappoint on that front. We enter a world where a disease has destroyed the world as we know it, leaving three types of people in its wake: basics, positives, and negatives.

I don't want to spoil much because it's a short enough book I could easily spoil the big details, but I love the concept. J. Leann's world features people divided by the status of a genetic factor in their blood, and she explores the idea that maybe people aren't so different after all when the main characters (two female negatives) have encounters with both other negatives and positives. The positives are the strongest of the three, with some amount of extra strength that their genetic positive factor gives them. The negatives are weaker and more vulnerable because the positives have grouped together under a military leader determined to destroy the negatives. And finally the basics, who don't factor into the story very much, have no resistance to the disease that ravages the land and therefore succumb to horrific physical symptoms, insanity, and eventual death.

The main characters have fascinating stories and motivations that lead them to connect with one another, and they experience tons of heartache and tragedy as the story moves along. The plot takes us quickly from a couple of mismatched people coming together in an effort to survive to the joining up of misfits from multiple groups all joined together in order to take down the militant group responsible for having destroyed so many negative lives.

J. Leann's Lyc-O Factor is a good story, perhaps a bit in need of more fleshing out, that gives us a great glimpse into a multi-faceted world. Her descriptions are rich with detail, her characters have intense angst that motivates them, and the story takes us deep into a dark place where few have found any kind of life before. It's certainly worth a read, and as such a short book, it won't take much time out of your day!
