Bad Idea #3

True North

Rate this book
They said I was a bad idea. Poor. Violent. Criminal.

They said I'd amount to nothing, and I believed them too.

Until I met her.

Layla Barros saved me from my worst, but to do that, she lost the best herself. Now it's my turn to bring her back to life. If only I can figure out how to do it.

I'll do anything to protect the chance we finally have together. I'll follow her to the other side of the word: Brazil. Cuba. You name it. But how can I be her true north when I'm still finding my direction too?

Because sometimes your worst demons are those closest to you. And sometimes getting rid of them isn't a choice at all.

There are no words to express how great this book is, if not by saying that True North is my favorite read by 2018 and will stay so until the end of the year.

This book was pure perfection from the first paragraph to the very last. It was as if the author had read my mind about everything I wished this book would be and then wrote something ten times better than what my fantasies may had been.

I loved how much happier this book was compared to the first angst-filled two. After seeing Nico and Layla suffer so much in the first two books, this one was a balm. Not to say that it was uneventful, becauce plenty of things happened, but there were no more doubts regarding their relationship. Both of them were here to stay this time. I adored seeing them building their life together, and fighting against outside challenges rather than interior obstacles.

I don't want to give anything away because this book needs to be savored.

All I'll say is that I have rarely enjoyed a book so much, and part of it is also due to the first two instalments, because only by seeing their struggles I could totally appreciate their happiness now.

In a word, Nico and Layla's story is simply epic. It's the kind of story that stays with you in the long haul, the one you find yourself thinking about again and again. The broke fed-ex delivery man with the body of a bad boy but a heart of gold and a dream in his pocket, and the girl who comes from wealth but is living a life that is not her own. And together they grow to become so, so much more.

It was a honor to witness their journey and when I eventually read the word end, I wished I could have read the rest of their lives together, because I was not ready to say goodbye. And yet, I also had a sense of peace, because after the stormy journey, they were both finally home, with each other.

Oh my God! I’m not ready to give up on Nico and Layla! I finished this series and I need more! I don’t know what could possibly happen in a next book (the book I need), but I want so much more. I loved this couple.
However, if there will not be another book about Nico and Layla, at least give me a book about Gabe. Because he is funny and he’s the next Soltero. Dr. Soltero. This sounds good. 🤔

"I knew that one day I would find my true north. I just never imagined she would be this beautiful, inside and out. I never imagined she would be you."
Nico and Layla . . . what a journey! One I'm so glad I took.

In this last installment, Nico and Layla are dealing with the aftermath of her relationship with Giancarlo.
Here we are, finally with our chance to be together, and there's this hulking ghost between us, taunting with his shadows.
I loved that the author didn't just brush the whole thing under the rug, but didn't dwell on it so long that it stalled out the story. In fact, I liked the way that all the strands of the plot came together, including the issues with Layla's father.
It makes me a dick, but I like that the one thing that really disturbs this cocky asshole's perfect cool is his awareness that his only daughter is probably getting it good on the regular from a tattooed, working-class me.
There were so many great moments!

What stood out the most was how the tone of the writing changed over the arc of the three books, how it evolved as the characters grew up and matured.

My only complaint is that I thought the author missed out on a few opportunities to further the intimacy between these two fabulous characters by having events come out in dramatic fashion instead of through honest dialogue. But I'm a junkie for that kind of thing. :-)

Nicole French is definitely an author to watch! I loved this story so much.

In advance of this review I would like to state that True North is the third novel in a series and I had not read the previous two novels prior to reading True North. It is labeled as a standalone, but I personally just went back and read the other two and I can say the series is more enjoyable as a whole. That said, not reading them first did not hurt my reading or review of this novel, because Nicole French knows how to write series novels that individually carry themselves and are only enriched by their companion novels. Very impressed.

True North continues Layla and Nico's story, a realistic love story that shows how, despite every wall put in their way, these two find a way to be together. The realities they face are tough, they're very similar to the stories we hear from friends every day, but Nicole French weaves hope into each struggle and every trial they face is a lesson that makes them grow. Layla learns how to accept her past, finding a way to face what haunts her, but also finding a way to learn to lean on others and accept love. She's such an open, honest character, so it was sweet to see her both recognize she wasn't accepting as openly as she gave it and recognize that her love is strong enough to even affect the most stubborn of men. Nico as a firefighter is the best, come on, we're all thinking it. Not only is he Layla's knight in shining armor, but he is a public servant with a vigilante attitude. He's kind, sometimes a little arrogant, and more than loving to everyone he meets. He's compassionate and the sort of man anyone dreams of having. As a finishing novel a lot happens in True North, but more specifically a lot of character growth takes place. Layla and Nico not only accept themselves, but accept who and what they are together. You'll be swooning a lot. Plus, we get to see them really be a couple, a strong adult couple, and that's refreshing and more than great for them. It's the perfect last novel.

The title of this novel is so perfect and has a lot of meaning behind it, which I really appreciate in any storyline. It's a very well delivered romance with just the right amount of angst, definitely a series I'd recommend and will personally re-read again.

"Saudade. A longing that never leaves. The bitter and the sweet. Just like us."

True North, the third book in the Bad Idea series by Nicole French. A wonderful and satisfying conclusion to Layla's and Nico's story.

"For better or for worse, neither of us ever learned to take the good without the bad, the pleasure without a bit of pain. Love always had to hurt a little."

Nico and Layla are such easy lovable characters and I got pretty much attached to them through the series. Not only because Nico is probably one of the hottest and most adorable bookboyfriends ever. Which girl doesn't want to be loved by a hot ex-delivery (now new-firefighter) guy who's looking like a latino bad-boy, with a heart of pure gold? But also because of Layla, a strong heroine who needed to learn early on how to fight her way back into life.

"I knew that one day I would find my true north. I just never imagined she would be this beautiful, inside and out. I never imagined she would be you."

At the beginning of True North I was amazed about the way the story took. The character development, specially Layla's. My thoughts were: this is SO good and if this stays this way this book is the best of this series. BUT unfortunately it didn't. Not sure how to explain it. For me there were more than one important storyline. And instead of weaving them neatly together, they felt like more or less three separate parts of the book. Like I was reading three novellas which were neatly connected to each other combined in one book.
Don't get me wrong, everything makes sense and all and it was wonderfully written. But for me it didn't felt like one big story. Does that makes any sense to you? :D
I missed a deeper connection through them all, that at least one part of the story would develop through the whole book.

"If I am his true north, then he is mine. Together, we'll never lose our way again."

Nevertheless, with True North Layla and Nico got their well deserved conclusion and I had a great time reading it. I love Layla and Nico seperately and even more together. The way they work together, like nothing else makes sense. They are really each other's true north.

"She's an angel dipped in gold, a woman from dreams I never knew I had ... until I met her."

Thank you Nicole for giving us Layla and Nico. Those characters are really impressive and inspiring!
True North is the true north of the Bad Idea series.

Nicole French continues with the Nico and Layla's storyline and I couldn't have been more excited to read this as soon as it hit my iPad! I am a HUGE lover of Nicole French and I literally cant ever get enough of her writing and this storyline is one that sucked me in from the first book!

Nico and Layla have come such a long way from the first book and this book was such a great installment to their story. They have had so many obstacles in their way but they always find a way to make it work between them. I am always so thrilled to see stories like this that are real and heartfelt in the way that it can show that things aren't always roses. Especially in a relationship. Relationships aren't always a picnic and their story shows that they aren't like you see in movies.

In this story Layla has to learn to accept her past in order to learn to face her fears along with learning how to lean on others when she needs it the most. Hope is woven in each struggle to keep the light burning for their relationship. Layla is such an amazing character and it is so awesome to see that she recognizes her faults and is willing to work towards a better solution.

Nico is such an amazing man. He is Layla's knight in shining armor and has such a will to make what was wronged right! He is a firefighter and c'mon ladies, we all know there is nothing wrong with having a sexy firefighter as the man of your dreams! Nico is such a kind man to everyone that he comes in contact with and loves Layla with all his being is willing to do anything that he can to make her see how much her loves her!

With any conclusion of a book series there are always going to be those issues that are handled in order to give that HEA we all want to see at the end of a series!

I am willingly sharing my review with Endlessly Reading book blog.

True North is book three of the Bad Idea series, you definitely need to read the others first. I highly recommend this book. Nicole French is phenomenal at writing angst, the previous books in this series she has had me near tears with Nico and Layla's story and True North was the same. But fear not, you will slowly have your heart down back together. I have loved Nico and Layla from when I read Bad Idea, my first taste of this amazing author whom has made me love reading books with angst. You will go through a blend of emotions while reading because what Nico and Layla have can only be described as a bitter sweet romance because let's be real, no relationship is perfect and we all carry our own baggage. I love the Bad Idea series because it's something real that you'd see everyday. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would, because this book deserves it and more!

Omg Nicole you did it again!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

True North is such an phenomenal, beautiful, and epic love story!! Nico is seriously a hero in my eyes!! Nico’s character is the antonym of strength and courage for Layla, and I just love these two characters so much. They will always have a special place in my heart ♥️!!

I love how I was able to see how much Layla and Nico has developed throughout the series. To see them grow up to the loving people they are in the end is amazing 😉!

I have to say that form all the books I have read from Nicole, this one ☝️ was by far her best work. There is literally no lack of details, nor vivid imagination of what is going on after each turn of event.

From the moment I read the first chapter in the book I was a goner, no one could stop me from finishing until I finish reading the book..... I mean No One!!!! There was no way I could put this book down!!!

I needed to see this through, I needed to know what will happen next and let me tell you, you won’t be disappointed at all. This book had me feeling all sorts of emotions, I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride.

Be prepared because Nicole made sure to keep you on your toes!! Nicole made sure to add a little twist in the story making the suspense of what will happen to Nico’s family, so heartbreaking....That when you finally realize what is happening you start yelling WHY!!! This cannot be happening!!

Nico and Layla love story is so beautiful written and I can’t wait to see what Nicole brings next. Nico and Layla story ended just perfectly and I wouldn’t change it for anything! I know this was the end of their story but I hope we get more on Nico’s family especially his brother who finally becoming the person he always planned to be a Doctor 👨‍⚕️!! Hot hot hot!!! 🔥 🔥

So don’t think about it twice to download this fantastic book and if you haven’t read the first book, binge read and do it now!!! You won’t have any regrets when you meet the beautiful Laya and the heroic Nico especially his loyal family that everyone wish to have!!

Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!!

A perfect conclusion for Layla and Nico

"If I am his true north, then he is mine. Together, we'll never lose our way again."

TRUE NORTH is the third book in Nicole French's Bad Idea Series. It is also the heartwarming conclusion to Layla and Nico's story. Even though this can be read as a standalone, to have a deeper understanding and more enjoyment from this story I recommend that both Bad Idea and Lost Ones be read first. For a little further information on Nico, Broken Arrow is also a suggestion.

I have loved reading this series, simply because Nicole's vivid descriptions of the emotions, the characters and the world around them are simply perfection. It's as if you too are experiencing every minor detail. True North is not all "sunshine and roses", there is also real pain, angst and drama as well. Layla and Nico were "real", well as real as I wanted them to be, they weren't perfect, they had flaws. To witness them finally believing in each other and their relationship was pure heaven.

This was one arduous journey, but it was definitely worth the ticket. It delivered everything a reader wants to see in a relationship, the trials and tribulations and also the joy and happiness, ending in a quiet peace that was fully deserved. A book and series I will definitely recommend.

NICO'S TRUE NORTH WAS ALWAYS NYU

What a truly marvelous way to end this series! True North is unquestionably my favorite book in this series. After all the angst in Book 2, Lost Ones, I needed this book like a soothing balm for my soul.

In True North, unlike Lost Ones, Nico and Layla are together for the whole book!. They are dealing with the aftermath of her abusive relationship with Giancarlo and his attack on her, as well as her relationship (or should I say lack of) with her father.

I absolutely love Layla and Nico together. I can hear the sizzle, feel the heat, and bask in the passion of their young love. I cheered for our girl as she chased her inner demons and conquered. As she confronted her father and made him see the truth. But most of all, I loved watching these two stand up for each other and be there for each other. To be there in the corner cheering for each other no matter the odds, cause that is what love does. I had big goofy grins and goose bumps through most of this book.I

Oh, the Epilogues. I'm one who loves a HEA with an Epilogue. Kind of gives you a glimpse down the future. Babies, careers, homes, lives settled. But when you get 2 of them, *sigh* it's bliss. They will always be NYU and Special Delivery in my heart.

I don't even know what to say, I am still in AWE of this series, and I finished it hours ago! So buckle up, I'll try to put why I LOVED this series so much into words...
First of all, her world... I said about the previous two books, a HUGE reason I love this Author is she spends alot of time on not JUST the characters, but their surroundings. The tapestry she weaves is palpable, I truly feel immersed in this city and culture during this time. I really can feel the world through these characters and I really feel like this is unique to this author and sets her work apart.
Second, can we talk about Layla for a minute? She wasn't my favorite heroine when I started reading this series. She totally is now. This girl, she's been through so much! As a survivor of some of the same things she dealt with myself, I could SO relate! I am not even ashamed to say I bawled like a baby during one part (you'll know when you get there ;) ) I was like I GET IT!!! IT GETS BETTER! And Nico responded just so perfectly! They made me so happy when they figured their s**t out! I wish they were real so I could hug them!
This book is just everything guys! Its seriously just right up there top three books of the year. You have to read this series. I love the realness of them separately and together and all their flaws and problems, it makes them perfectly imperfect in my opinion. Just go get this book, you need it. Now I'm going to go cry into my pillow because I didn't want to say goodbye and I'm going to miss them!

First I have to say I just love the name of this book and the story behind it!! True North by Nichole French is the third and final installment in the Bad Idea series. And what and ending it is! Without giving anything away, I will say that this installment will surprise you with a few twist and turns and a perfect ending.

Very well written, with all those loose ends tied up including some that you may have forgotten about. Those little details that just grab your attention and make your heart hurt a little. To those feelings that are evoked from reading.

When the synopsis gives you this:

Because sometimes our worst demons are those we never expect. And sometimes getting rid of them isn’t a choice at all.

You know its going to be a rollercoaster of emotions.

Layla is back in New York and while things seem the same, for her life is different.

Nico has waited for this moment for Layla to be back in his arms, but she is different now. And he will do anything in his power to keep her there.

To fully enjoy this book you need to have read the series in order. The buildups and the lows will all be worth it.

This was a good finish to this series. I think I was expecting Giancarlo to play a larger part in this story. Even though he was taken in the beginning I kind of wanted something more to happen to Layla and Nico other than his mother's storyline of almost getting deported. But whatevs. This was still a cute ending. Layla and Nico, they are relationship goals! Hot damn. I need to find me a man like Nico! Where he at though?! Hahahaha. But for real. I loved this series. The first book was good and the second book took a little more to be able to read since it was a storyline about abuse. But this one was great. <3

ok I didn't throw anything although I did want to shoot her father. Years of heartache and healing have come to pass and these two finally set on a path of being together. There are still challenges but challenges make us strong. . . if they don't kill us first. While the beginning of their story was filled with trauma and torment, fear and longing this part of the story is mild in comparison. The author gives us a chance to breathe with them as their journey continues. The story is still amazing and so are the characters. Watching/reading it all come together with all of the loose ends tied up makes your heart sing and the romantic in you receive closure.

This author is amazing with how she worked us through the years of trial and error this couple experienced. It was traumatic, filled with angst and torment, misguided actions, abuse and so much more. Each emotion is felt from your toes to the longest hair on your head. You can't help but get lost in their story and fight hard with them to get their happy ending. Wonderful read.

When you find your True North!

What an amazing series. This is one of my favorite couples this year. Nico and Layla mean so much reading about their journey. I'm hoping this really isn't the end for them but even if it is, I'll cherish them like I really knew them. Their story will suck you in and make you feel like your experiencing everything with them. The writing of their story was that great. When I read Bad Idea, I didn't think I was going to like it as much as I did. I not only liked it, I loved it. So this Bad Idea series was the best idea ever! You'll experience all the highs and lows and fall in love. Highly recommend this series to everyone.

If I could rate this book more then 5 stars, I'd easily rate it a million stars. Once again Nicole French knocks it out of the park. This books was everything I've come to expect from her and more. It was a perfect way to end this trilogy. As I finish reading the final pages of this three book series by Nicole French I'm quite saddened that it's over. I have a few couples in the romance genre that will always be my favorites but Layla & Nico claim the top spot so far in 2018. There were parts in the series that were slow & redundant but overall I truly enjoyed the author's writing style. She grabbed my attention and drew me into the imperfect lives of Nico & Layla as well as their families. I felt their love, angst & pain but most of all I think their relentless determination to overcome life's hurdles touched me the most. It wasn't always easy because there were chapters where I feared everything would fall apart for good, especially for Layla. And it is here where I have to say thank you to Nico! Everyone experiences sadness, disappointment, a lost love but what these two have lived through & accomplished makes me very grateful for what I have. Book three ties up all the loose ends & then some. There are a few surprises that were unexpected & added that much more joy to this happy ending & I look forward to reading other series by Nicole French. A winning series!

A great ending to a great series. I really got into this story and was rooting for Layla and Nico all the way through. They both had so much baggage and flawed pasts but true love conquers all .
Both characters really grew up and matured in this story and one or two characters got what was coming to them, namely Layla's dad !!.
Well worth reading!!.

This is the final book in the Bad Idea series and one I have been wanting to read. In this book we follow Nico and Layla's story and the repercussions of her time with Giancarlo, the horror that she is still facing. Not knowing if she will ever be a normal girlfriend to Nico again. Nico is determined to be there for Layla as well as save his mother from being deported. Their lives seem to be coming together but unexpected events may still have the power to rip them apart. Will Nico and Layla finally get their happily ever after? I love, love, love Nico and Layla. This is one couple that has fought everything from each other to family and others that want to destroy their love. This story is one that will stay with you for a long time. Nicole French is one of those authors that you will want to follow and read more of her work. Masterful storyteller that will grip you and you won't ever want to let go.

Well what can be said about this book True North. Its the third in the series and Wow just Wow what a fantastic read it is. I loved it from the start Nico and Layla are made for each other. They have had there fair share or up's and down's,happy or sad good or bad, but who doesn't, these characters are both so loveable, and they are growing from strength to strength, with so many obstacles in the way, with the love they hold for each other they can conquer anything. This book pulls on your heart strings a bit, but a beautiful story as i said loved it. Well worth the 5 stars wish it could be more.Go grab this whole series you really won't be disappointed.
