I read this back in 2011. I laughed, I cried, and almost each chapter had something that resonates with me.
I was after my sister to read it, and I nagged her until she did.
While there are many hilarious scenes, there is one that we often reminisce. Although I don't recall all the details.
The protagonist does poorly in English as a subject. He is then tutored by a Christian family for a while. Then one day in class, there is some grammar question that nobody can answer and then he raises his hand and answers it correctly. everybody in the class is stunned. then they come to congratulate him, as if he's just back from Hajj.
Another funny incident is when our protagonist's friend back home (I forget his name) sends a letter about the love interest.

It is hilarious. But it does not fail to elicit the nostalgic emotions that intends to. In most of the chapters, you recall your own bit of doing the same mistake, committing the same sin. For instance. the way Aadi and his friends skip namaz to watch TV would just make you cry in agony. How stupid we were as kids.

Having said that, I hated the last few chapters. When Aadi grows up to be a man and tries to "pursue" (for lack of a better word) his love interest Wajjo aapi, things spiral down south. It is not a love story, and the attempt of making it one just ruined the experience of an otherwise perfect book. I guess, since the novel is titled "Bachpan Ka December", the author should have left it at that.

If you want to travel down your memories of childhood, this is a must read. Don't expect a great fulfilling finale.

This sure is the 2nd best novel I have read, first being "الف".

Bachpan Ka December, a masterpiece by Hashim Nadeem, having classical plot with discriminating characters.
The abstract thought of the book covers late 70’s through a little boy’s point of view and then late 80’s through the same mature man’s thoughts, a journey from childhood's December to the December of youth. The book explains childhood innocent memories, followed by coming age experiences and feelings. Apart from its majestic writing and extraordinary choice of words for illustration, it is also having few appealing and beautiful lessons for our society. The book talks about parental control in childhood, family affairs and relationships with neighbors. The sarcasms used in the novel are sharper and humor is more ridiculous. Hence everything that needs to be felt is more penetrating.
‘Aadi’, the main character of the novel, never knows, that with ‘Wajjo’, with whom he has great affection, turns into a romantic interest later in his life. While reading this novel, you will feel yourself in every sentence and this will remind you of your childhood. The feelings and expressions are communicated in such a way that the reader can’t stop himself/herself to deny the fact that how innocently happy your childhood was and how adulthood can suddenly make your life different from the way it was supposed to be. The kind of relationship in which ‘Aadi’ and ‘Wajjo’ were tied together, was too sacred to be replaced by any other bond.
In this novel, I found these things a little poor and cheesy:
- Exaggeration: Some ideas are dramatized extremely.
- Repetition: You’ll found some plots are rehearsed more than once.
- Few scenes are explained in the way that doesn’t relate to reality.
- Few incidents are lengthened more than they needed to be.
After finishing it, I am having mixed feelings. It has not a happy ending but it has definitely a realistic and well deserved ending. I love this novel and it's going to stay with me forever to make feel and understand the life in its true sense.

A good book by Hashim Nadeem.

The reason I like this book was Ammad, the protagonist, going to Cadet College. It was very relatable and very interesting. The struggle of a boy who came from humble beginnings to study in the best college of Pakistan was fascinating to read. His struggles and innocence made me smile. The story also has some heart-wrenching moments which makes your eyes water, but then again the next moment you'll be laughing.

A sweet story with a little bit of suspense makes this book worth a read.

It was kinda too sad for my taste though the ending was satisfactory.

My favorite quote from the book has to be
"Aadi, duniya mein kuchh rishte aise bhi to hote hain ke jinhein baat ya mulaaqaat ki majbooi naheen hoti. Wo insaan ki har baat aur us ki har mulaaqaat mein hamesha shaamil rehte hain... Maante ho na ke lafz aur tasveer hi sab kuchh naheen hote. Jahaan ye sab khatm hota hai wahaan se tasavvur ka rishta shuru hota hai."

I don't agree with the idea of male-female friendship, but other than that, the book is quite good. Story is entertaining, informative and shows a very keen observation of the society the characters belong to. Coming of age stories are my thing, yes!

STORY LINE :
As the name suggests, "bachpan ka decmeber", it's the story of a boy named "Ibad" who is in trans with his bachpan. All those mischieves he used to do with his freinds, living in a village, far away from the city. He had a friend, a saheyli, who is about 8 years older than him, and he likes her alot. He used to do everything she says. They were happy, but life has got some other plans for them.Things were going fine until another family joined their compound, and the peace of village is lost.
And when he grew old, he realized that with the age things change. Life is NOT as simple as it used to be.
"waqt hamesha ek sa nahi rehta".

My Review:
Overall the story was good. I am already in love with Hashim Nadeem's writing style, so that will surely not disappoint you. Plus i love cadets so, i enjoyed reading ibad's cadet journey. The story was going smoothly for me but then everything has an end, you know. The ending was 50% 50% for me, i am confused that whether a boy and a girl can only be friends, YES they can be... This story says that....

THINGS I LIKE :
All the fun things was great. I always wanted to visit a village and this incites me more 🥺. I like how his father was strict when it comes to islam. (except being friend with a female but he calls her api, so it's okay to me).

THINGS I DON'T LIKE:
The writer, i guess, don't exactly know how much old a person is in particular class. Bcz even though Ibad was in seventh grade, to me, it seems like the writer is still showing his character as fourth garde student.
The second thing was the ending, i am not really sure whether i am satisfied with it or not...

Ps : This is the first i am writing a detailed review.
If you read this book, tell me your views about the ending.

This book was on my to read list for last four years .And now after finishing I have mixed feelings for it .
my friend while recommending this book saying being an ex-cadet (alumni of cadet colleges ) you will enjoy this, specifically experiences of writer about the time spent in cadet college. and now after finishing I would say it occurred to me that I am reading my diary. I not only recalled my cadet life but my childhood too. While reading I supposed we old friends are gathered and talking about our bunks , dodging and our combined punishments The innocent missions of protection of waju aapi by ibad friends put some sweet smiles on my face . thank you Hashem Nadeem for cherishing these memories ..love story is typical of Hashem Nadeem's and he just messed up love and friendship(I would say pathetic) . I don’t agree with his these philosophies .specially hated his notes at the end of many chapters trying to be philosophical ..

I would give it a 5 star!!
It's a masterpiece by Hashim Nadeem. This novel actually makes you fall in love with that era (70s,80s). Born in late 90s, I haven't experience it much but I realized in the novel how closely people used to live together. It gives you a beautiful perspective of life.
The novel flash backs all the moments you must have lived in your childhood. All the gossips, friendships, relationships, love, bond, unity in our childhood was the best phase of life we ever lived.

This novel is a must read for everyone. The older you are, the more fun it will be!

MY REVIEW CONTAIN MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

Mjhe is kitab ma mojood bht si cheezon se ikhtalaf ha pr overall I want to appreciate this piece of art for its poetic and emotional writing. Aadi Ka bachpan Ka pov or oski jawane tk ki journey was well written. Is main character ki development BHT umda thi k at first I felt annoyed at many parts pr slowly this character started growing on me.

Yarr Is bichari k sath kiya Kuch na hwa. Her journey throughout the novel was very depressing. Or writer ko akhri page tk bhi is character pr reham na Aya.

I really wanted to mention my favourite character (Tahir) jis ki achanak maut ne mjhe BHT rulaya. I was totally rooting for wajjo and Tahir pr phr ma na socha hero ya ni koi or ha🥲💔.....pr ni writer ne isay b bara sadma denay ki kasam Khai Hoi thi.

I thought best ending yahi hogi k wajjo or aadi ki Shaadi hogi or aik behtareen Nikah ki example dekhae jaygi jisme hero Umar m chota or kauwara or heroin bari or divorced ha......pr ni novel k akhri pages ma aik 2 bachon Ka baap introduce krwaya Gaya Jo end pa heroin ko le ura ( never gonna satisfy myself with ending k why writer made wajjo reject aadi's proposal and accept this Rehan Sahab as her life partner)

Or writer ne apnay is faislay Ka jawaz ya pesh Kiya k wajjo and aadi ki bachpan se Jo friendship thi wo kaim rehni chaiye or (Nikkah) dunyawi ristay Kay naam se ya dosti Ka Bandhan kaim na reh sakayga...( like What the😵‍💫) I totally disagree with this theory of Hashim Nadeem sahab... I think dosti Nikah Ko replace ni krsakti or na hi Nikah dosti ki Rah ma koi rukawat ha yr agar apko apnay life partner ki sorat ma aik Acha dost miljay to is se Khush naseebi ki koi or baat kiya hoskti..

Still will give this book 4 star review just for the phenomenal writing of Hashim Nadeem sahab. Ikhtalafat apni Jaga pr I was totally immersed in this book so highly recommend.

#review: This book is a complete masterpiece. I was very reluctant in reading it due to its topic and storyline. Basically it's about a boy," Aadi"of 70's, his journey from childhood to adulthood. He is forced to go to cadet college. And when he comes back, things are different and new. People have changed, memories are fading, friendships have ended, relationships are breaking. His own perspective and emotions have changed. His chastity of childhood has changed into maturity. And Aadi's affection for his dearest "Wajjo" changes into a romantic interest.
But after reading this book, I would only say that it's a treasure for readers.
The writer has explained the life of a small boy from a small area in such fine details. It's not like a typical love story, The book is full of emotions. There is friendship, kinship, family relations, anger, hatred, innocence, humor, and love. You feel like every line is touching your soul. With every turning page, the heart beat goes higher.
Moreover the fun fact is that there are so many beautiful moments from his college life. The life of a cadet and its pros and cons. The writer has also tried to highlight, how much family pressure or societal pressure can effect your life. This novel really communicates with you. It's definitely worth the read.
It's highly recommended but you will definitely feel nostalgia after reading this. 🌸

Some books take you on a nostalgic journey the moment you begin reading — Bachpan Ka December is one such book. It was my first introduction to the brilliant Urdu author Hashim Nadeem, and I’d say it’s a must-read at least once in a lifetime.
The story revolves around a sweet boy, Adi, and his innocent friend Wajju Api. Their bond goes beyond friendship — it’s a soulful connection that needs no label. Even naming it would only diminish its beauty. I felt a deep ache for Adi, but perhaps, some love stories are meant to remain incomplete — to save us from even greater pain. Reading this book made me relive every phase of my own childhood. It beautifully captures not just childhood memories but also the purity and depth of relationships — whether it’s friendship, sibling love, parental care, or the warmth of neighborhood connections.
The story starts off light-hearted and joyful but gradually becomes more emotional and melancholic. While Adi and his friends add life to the story, Adi and Wajju remain its emotional core. This book will make you laugh and cry — sometimes at the same time. If you haven’t read Bachpan Ka December yet, I highly recommend you do. It’s a heartfelt experience.

After reading many good reviews about this book, I started reading this book 'bachpan ka December' by Hashim Nadeem.

The plot revolves around a boy Aadi and the book has been divided into three different phases of his life. The phases have further been divided into small interesting chunks like pehla sawan, pehla dost, pehli maar.

The book takes you back into carefree life of childhood. It reminds you how scoldings fail to effect in this phase and instead only help you do the same mischief in a different way.
The book makes you smile, chuckle and laugh.

As the plot advances into other stages of Aadi's life, it gets more sober, a little grim but still interesting. The book is easy to read and a good pick for a relaxing break from everyday chores.

It was okay okay type
Matlab purey novel mai writer ne khud ko victim
deakhane ki koshish ki hai ...mujhe laga tha pata nai kitne dukh aur gam mile honge aghe jaa k ...but aadi ne literally dream life ji,aur je raha hai ..but writer ne ase likha hai jaise puri duniya k gum Aadi ko mile hain..mai end tak wait Kar rahi thi shayed ab kuch hoga jo writer itna gumgeen hai but howa kuch nai 😭

Oh, God! This was exceptional! I loved it beyond words. The language was so poetic that the reader cannot stop himself from reading some passages aloud. Next time, I'm definitely going to try the audiobook. I really regretted the 6 yrs this novel has been on my TBR, how could I miss such a masterpiece for so many years😢 This is one of the books that you could never get enough of it so yes, this book is for multiple reads😍
-1 🌟 for the tragic ending 😭😭 What would've happened if the writer let Wajjo n Aadi be together by the end of the story?! Despite this little thing, the novel was impeccable and a must-read. By the half of the novel, the writer was already one of my favourites. Everything was so perfect, from plot to language. A great job is done!
