Ruthless, foulmouthed, and sometimes drunk. That’s me on a good day. Just imagine what I’m like on a bad day.
My name is Reika. I don’t know who I am anymore other than the following facts:
I’m unlikeable.
I used to be a member of the Yakuza.
I think a succubus has a thing for me.
The police shot me six times.
After my discharge from the hospital I learned that I had the unique talent to control fire. That’s right, a modern day pyromancer. I have no idea where these powers came from, the doctor that worked on me upped and vanished, along with all records of me ever being admitted to the hospital.
That’s when shady people from the shadows began to stalk me, some even had the balls to attack me. Don’t worry, I flambéed them all, I can take care of myself. What I am worried about are the people of New York City. Who’s going to defend them when my war with these shadow people reaches a boiling point?
I don’t want to be a heroine. I just want my life back.

Reika is a great protagonist being a foul-mouthed, sexy Yakuza girl who just so happens to be a succubus as well. She slaughters her way through a bunch of demons who want to take her prisoner or kill her. Along the way she recruits an unlikely group of allies including a frenemy who wants to seduce her [and does at least once]. I had a whole lot of fun with this book and while it's not what I'd call high literature, it's a delightfully entertaining urban fantasy read. I'm definitely going to read the whole series.
This book is cringe inducing, snore worthy awfulness. I didn’t care whatsoever for the characters, the plot was dismissal, and I was bored out of my mind. Nothing about this book is good and it was just a waste of my time that I can never get back.
I liked this introduction into a new Urban Fantasy series. It is the story of Reika and opens with a bang and goes crazy from there. I laughed and moaned through most of it. Reika was a hoot as she fought demons left and right and tried to find out exactly how she ended up with powers after she got out of the hospital after being shot. The story had a twist or two and I loved the twist at the end. It had a few sex scenes but not to nasty or chapters long as some books do. A few of the supporting characters were funny too and all were well written so I could like or hate them well. Just a fun crazy book that I read in one sitting to see how it would end.
I’m sure any one who reads my reviews is probably tired of “a fun read”. However that’s exactly how I feel. I read for fun and finding strong characters and stories that make me laugh or cry or get angry at the circumstances the characters find themselves in makes the book “fun” for me. This was definitely fun. Angry, snarky, and somewhat twisted these characters kept me reading. I laughed, got frustrated and had a few ‘duh’ moments as the story dragged me along always wanting to see what came next. I really enjoyed this story. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This was a fun read. It's about a Japanese American girl that wakes up with demonic powers after being shot 6 times in a shootout between the NYPD and the Yakuza. Awesome way to start a book. As the story goes on, our smart mouthed anti-hero (actually, let's call a spade a spade. She's an average New Yorker!) tries to pretty much stop the end of the world. It's a nice fun read. If you like strong female protagonist without the dreaded "need a man to save me" trope, this is the story for you! I'm looking forward to the next book!
An urban fantasy with street-wise, tattooed former gang member heroine. I did not take to the story at first, but as it ramps up, constantly throwing new situations at you I got sucked into it and thoroughly enjoyed the outcome.
While not an absolute favorite book, I found it to be a story will follow up on in the future. There are some holes in the characters that I hope will be filled in in the future. All in all a decent read.
Be prepared for plenty of blood and at least for me way too much graphic gore . As for lez sex ? NA DA NONE NIL nowhere in the the complete book ! Sure hoping that that is going to improve . The 5 stars are for the tale .

A heroine possessed by a demon. How original. This first book is a great setup. The outline for the demon world and how it meshes with the human one is setup. We get an interesting cast of characters. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out
I thought this was a good book. It was definitely a good beginning to a series about demons and humans. I will be interested to see how things go in the future.
Reika knew something was of when she woke up in the hospital one day. That is until the demon Lucifer tries to take over the humans and destroy everything she loves
Urban fantasy fans will love this story about a former Yakuza girl who left that life behind, only to encounter an even more powerful and threatening group. Demons, plotting to possess human bodies and take over the Earth, planned to use her as a tool.
Unfortunately for them, when she's unknowingly endowed with demonic powers, she turns them against those who have tainted her against her will.
The writing style is fresh and makes you feel part of the (very adult) story. I loved it, and I think anyone who likes this genre will, too. As I warned, though, it is an adult book, with a not-inappropriate amount of gore, and some gritty scenes of a sensual nature, with LGBT elements.
With a succubus in the book, how could there not be sex?
I have to admit that I almost settled for 2 out of 5 stars on this one. I think the overall story is not too bad and I do, generally, like a kick ass foul tongued heroin but…
…the heroin in this case is really way to much of an arsy, whining brat towards everyone that comes close to her, friend or foe alike. On more than one occasion I thought “grow up for Christ sake!”.
It is a shame since the book has a lot of the good ingredients like a protagonist learning how to use her new powers, some mysteries and twists, lots of bad guys to dispose off. Unfortunately the immature behavior of the heroin was really putting me off.
I am still on the fence as to whether I will continue with this series.
