What causes intelligence? Is its basis tangible or a mere consequence of evolution? That is the question that Denton Brackwood and his company are being asked to help safeguard. A new client, an academic professor, has sought the help of Brackwood and his consulting firm to find a missing person along with some highly secret computer files. The missing person is part of a small, extremely secretive team with a strange quest: To find an elementary particle that might be responsible for empowering all matter in the universe with intelligent behavior.
