Originally produced for the stage by For the Love of Learning and Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, the dramatic selections from transVersing feature some of Newfoundland's most vibrant trans-youth voices. Gathering the work of Dane Woodland, Fionn Shea, Daze Jefferies, Violet Drake, Taylor Stocks, and Perin Squires, transVersing is "where fiddle meets Shakespeare meets slam poetry meets soapbox rant." These are brave, creative, and revealing voices charting our course to understanding and social justice for all.
A brilliant piece that explores various trans experiences through art forms such as prose, poetry, and screenplay. This project took first-person submissions from various youth at For the Love of Learning and dramatized them in a powerful play. The book includes the text of the full play as well as some of the individual pieces from the contributors. As a whole, it creates a wonderful look at the progression of mindset and self-image of a few young artists and has an overall message of hope.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to read some of the original submissions and then see how they made their way into the play, interwoven into other's works or standing alone. I especially enjoyed the sections by Violet Drake and Dane Woodland. Through prose and poetry, the contributors express themselves in a raw fashion that rips right into the reader's heart.
Wonderful, wonderful read that is powerful and enlightening. I can only imagine what an amazing experience it would be to see this performed live.
Slowly made my way through as I typically do with poetry. I read quite a bit of queer poetry, literature, and non-fiction, but I haven’t dug into the trans community. This collection of poetry from trans youth so wonderfully powerfully. Their strength, determination, compassion, and sense of self blows me away.
I really enjoyed that this book was presented as both poetry and theatrical prose. A compilation of writing by young Newfoundland trans artists explores identity, trans embodiment and living in the world while trans. A very engaging read for anyone interested in diverse perspectives.
For when you want to be absolutely blown away by young voices with self awareness and grace. Poems at the front and tarnsformed into a play at the end, this collection is beautiful and filled me with big, big feelings.
A bit clunky in some parts but good! It read really well up until the play and that’s where I’d say I had difficulty getting through. I think the musical aspect threw me off and it was hard to visualize it how it was intended to be seen.
