I've been in France over a year now and this was nice to smooth out my many wrinkles and to clarify a lot of phrases. If you are familiar with the language but aren't yet confident this is a great audio course that has a little something more than some of the other ones. Not sure how it would work for a complete beginner.
I couldn’t get many phrases out while in France but I understood most of what was going on. C’est la vie! I really enjoyed the teacher’s method and audio learning. Super helpful compared to struggling through high school French class with Madame Soubra. 🇫🇷
The learning method of Paul Noble worked pretty effortlessly for my language learning, and I did feel massive progress through the 12h 38 minutes of listening. At the end of this audiobook, Paul dedicates about 1 hour to review all the phrases provided in the course quickly; therefore, in conclusion, you should be confident about the familiarity with the presented material.
It's worth reviewing the course in parts of no more than 1 hour/day and supporting yourself with Paul Noble's e-book to strengthen the effect. Afterwards, don't forget about the accompanying booklet attached.
Being done with this lecture, I'm going to make my way through "Next Steps in French Paul Noble" audiobook and start reading short French stories.
The are are so many language courses out there that are boring and inefficient but Paul genius and engaging teaching method makes you recover the love for language learning. I am a language teacher and can say that these courses truly work. I'm currently doing the French one and can't stop listening to the recording. I even listen to it in the gym! Excellent!
Instructional: J’ai fini! Finally! Took me 2 months to get through this 13 hour audiobook French course, but I made it! I learned a ton and highly recommend if you want to learn French. At times it was repetitive enough that it felt like torture, but at the same time, I definitely remember more because of it. I used in conjunction with The Duolingo app.
A perfect audiobook for ‘refreshing’ my high school French before going to France with my family. It moved at a good pace and had a great review of everything at the end of the book. I don’t know how helpful it would be if you were listening with zero French language experience but was great with some background in the language.
Easy to learn french via Paul Noble. I listened to Paul Noble alongside my daily duolingo practice en definitely feel more confident speaking French these days. Make sure to keep listening and reading french to enhance progress.
This is a “conversational course”. What that means is that the learning process relies more on the subconscious pattern matching learning of your brain, compared to the traditional language learning process where one is taught linguistics and semantic rules ( i.e. grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and etc). This method certainly is more compelling and effective than the traditional ways for one who’s starting with a language ( just as children learn their mother tongue ). So if that’s your expectation, this is yours. However, if you want to be able to read, write, and “reason” ( i.e. think through language ) in French, then of course you will need to learn the “rules” of the language rigorously later. Even in that, starting your learning from the subconscious level is certainly more effective and jumping to the rules straight away.
I really enjoyed the course, particularly at times where one’s able to compose complicated phrase almost effortlessly (i.e. subconsciously, as the course promises) towards the end.
Already doing the next French course of the series.
Didn’t give the fifth star because I believe going through the “supplementary” text book to familiarise yourself with the vocabulary is a essential (and not just a bonus), and the couse doesn’t give any practices from the book.
This was the second of Paul Noble’s audio courses that I have completed recently. The first was much shorter, only a couple of hours but this one was over 12 hours. I was looking for a way to supplement my current French training and came across these audiobooks. Although the material was beginner, and I didn’t actually learn a lot new, I gained a lot of respect for Paul Noble and his course.
Both audio courses should be where those who want to learn French should start. Paul Noble (and his native French speaker assistant Marion) walk us through, word by word, with the students being tutored while learning to build full sentences by adding one word at a time. Yes, the content is very basic (and the repetition can be tedious at times) but the method would work for anyone to wants to learn the basics. As a result of Noble’s teaching method even beginners can form sentences using a dozen or more words by just adding word after word.
Paul Noble also shares information on why French is the way it is which makes it easier for new learners to grasp why yerbs, for example, are conjugated the way they are, making it easier to remember, and use them. I don’t give 5** very often, only for books make a big impact and can stand the test of time. This one does.
I listened to this course on Audible, it takes 12hrs and 38mins to complete.
I wanted to do this course, to prepare my basic french before my ski holiday in the alps. It did exactly that, it uses repetition as a method for learning/memorising simple phrases and questions that are useful in everyday scenarios. For example, there are sections on booking a room in a hotel and asking for a taxi. If you go into the course wanting a refresher in everyday french, this will be perfect for you. It built up my confidence so that I felt able to talk simple french.
Paul Noble developed an effective method of steady and almost passive learning a language. You don't need to put much effort to learn words and phrases. After many repeats, it's likely to automise sentence-building. I've already taken his follow-up course in French.
However, a disadvantage, which occurred personally to me, was taking his Spanish course before the French one. Since the script for two courses is almost identical, it was difficult to separate these romance languages.
☝️🤓 i should technically log this twice as i listened to an hour of new material and would then go back over it but i don’t want to eviscerate my avg. page count.
but yeah definitely will listen to this again as well as his more advanced ones. goal is to be able to understand about 50% of a YA novel like Harry Potter by the end of the year.
The book is not for learning maybe for remember/repeating what you have learnt before. Paul Noble has very simple solutions for some complicated french grammar rules. This was the second time I have listened and enjoyed again.
I enjoyed this Audible selection very much. The pedagogy is sound, the pace is good, the payoff--increased comfort with French--great. I've gone through it twice in preparation for a trip to France. Money well spent.
This book uses the translation approach, and I'm not a big fan of it. The exercises are related to real-life situations but they're not contextualized. Only a few tenses are approached. I think this can be one of the tools to use when learning French, but it's far from getting you to an A2 level.
This book should not be judged by my inability to speak French. It does a great job of teaching. It’s pretty long and I would occasionally wonder how much more I could retain, but then it would go back over older stuff for practice. I’ll try to listen to this again in the future.
Great fun book! I learned a lot of key phrases, such as things you would say when traveling. I feel confident that I would be able to communicate during my trip to France.
The method is amazing. Really efficient. I just regret it is not so long, but the essential rules and structures of the language are there and helps a lot.
Paul’s method is solid, but I couldn’t understand the translator, and slowing down the speed to below normal didn’t help enough. I’m going to look for a different course.
Tried about 10 French books - this was the best. Easy to use, lots of tricks to learn and remember words and phrases. I started with part 1 and eventually bought the entire course. High recommend.
