Lyric Multiples comprises four essays written over the last decade. The subject is poetry but the essays range over such topics as the evolution of the human call, ascensional modes of thinking, pop songs, the built environment and its discontents, the post-punk moment, its fruitful aftermath, and much else. Throughout this book, Albon explores unencountered varieties of aesthetic experience and the contributions they make to an ideal of social interconnectivity.
One lovely evening in November 2018, when the world was a far different place, I went to City Lights and experienced a bracing colloquy between Max Shanley and George Albon, discussing this work. It has taken me all this time to summon up the courage to read it. Based on what I heard that night, I have to say that reading this book fulfilled my expectations, and justified my misgivings. Simply put, I dipped my toes into the introduction, and was pulled into a whirlpool of erudition and stunning prose. I felt a lot like John Kruk "hitting" against Randy Johnson in the 1993 All-Star Game.
I suspect I'll be stepping up to the plate again, before too long.
"I'll just say one word: 'Icarus'. If you get it, great. If you don't, that's fine too...although you should probably read more." - Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan). "24 Hour Party People".
