Journalist for over twenty years, Daniel Andreyev will introduce you to the Dragon Quest saga from an unprecedented angle, as a major social phenomenon that has influenced several generations of Japanese. Through the pages of this book, he will give you his expertise in Japanese gaming, supported by his knowledge of Japan, all in the service of analysis of the series of Square Enix.
The best of Third Editions have thought provoking analysis, interesting interpretations of characters and lore. The worst are like extended wikipedia articles I had to pay for.
This is definitely the worst Third Editions book I've read so far. I'll be more careful with my purchases from this publisher in the future.
If you want to be talked down to about industry history you can find online, this is the book for you.
While the final fantasy books in this series talk about themes and complex analysis, this just comes off as a regurgitation of Wikipedia articles with an added heap of apparent condescension from the author.
If I am told a book is written by a master on the subject, and that I would be able to "decipher the creation and the story of this saga", that is what I expect to find during my reading. If what I get instead is like a printed blog about how much the author loves this franchise and the only bibliography given is a bunch of newspaper articles or game reviews, I will not be pleased.
You can take it as a love letter to the franchise with some memories one can easily relate to, but you will not learn anything you did not know before opening this book for the first time.
A few spelling errors, a couple grammatical errors. But this is to be expected from an author in which English is not his native tounge. The sentences are structured rather strangely, and the book delves more into the history of the men who created the series rather than focusing on the games themselves. While I did enjoy parts of the book, I cant reccomend it to anyone who is not a Dragon Quest fan.
Very insightful about almost every Dragon Quest game except the Dragon Quest Monsters on Gameboy and the special tv series Dragon Warrior Abel Anime. I recommend this book for DQ fans.
It was interesting reading the story behind the creation of each Dragon Quest game. However, I wish it went a bit further with the analysis of the different themes of the mainline games.
