Mutiny in deep space? Put out in a long boat? What is this, the Spanish Main?

Sometimes a new revolutionary technology is worth killing your best friend to get.
Unfortunately, Captain William Brighton just found out he’s the best friend.

Can he find a way to survive with his loyal crew?

Captain William Brighton has been entrusted by his superiors with a revolutionary starship, one destined to change the face of the known universe. With it, no place is too far to explore. But such a prize turns out to be too intoxicating for others to ignore. The competition manages to infiltrate Brighton's team and take control of the ship. Cast adrift with those still loyal to him with no power, no way to navigate, and little food, Brighton must push his team to the limits of endurance in order for them to survive. Hunted by others who also want their technological secrets, Brighton cannot allow them to simply stay put and wait to be rescued. His wounded pride will allow no other outcome than the retaking of his stolen ship, and justice for those responsible for its theft. In order to bring this to pass, though, Brighton and his crew must do the set a course for Earth and hold to it with only the stars to steer by. If the captain's reckoning is wrong, they'll all be dead.

Dead Reckoning by the Cheney brothers is a gripping and innovative start to the Reckoning series, told entirely through log entries that give the story a fresh, immersive feel. What sets this book apart is the clever use of dual narration—each brother takes on different characters, bringing distinct voices and perspectives that enrich the narrative.

The log entry format creates a sense of immediacy and intimacy, pulling readers directly into the characters’ minds as they navigate tension, mystery, and unexpected twists. The brothers’ complementary storytelling styles add depth and texture, making each entry feel personal and authentic.

Dead Reckoning combines sharp writing with a compelling plot that unfolds through these fragmented but connected pieces, building suspense with every new entry. It’s a must-read for fans of experimental formats, multi-voiced narratives, and stories that break traditional storytelling molds.

If you’re looking for a novel that feels both intimate and cinematic, with strong character-driven storytelling, Dead Reckoning is a thrilling introduction to a series worth following.

I enjoyed reading this as I know one of the Cheney brothers. I liked the different perspectives and the formatting of the book. Wanted more chapters from the “bad guys’” perspective, as that was a nice touch.
