Deceived #2

The Highwayman

Rate this book
Though he is his father's heir, Bartholomew spends most of his time doing a whole lot of nothing, constantly reminded that his father doesn't need his help, and his siblings definitely don't want it.

When he receives word that the village back home is being plagued by a highwayman, Bart leaps at the chance to prove to his family that he can handle more responsibility, that's he's more than an irritating older brother always getting in the way.

But upon his arrival, the home he remember so fondly seems long gone, replaced by strangers, murder, and an old friend who seems to be only a pale, sad shadow of the boy Bart used to know...

Good

4.25 ⭐️

I really enjoyed Bart and Perry’s story. I felt for Bart with his disappointment and hurt by his families actions. It’s interesting seeing things from a different angle as we only ever saw him from Cris’s and Jude’s perspective and they saw things very differently than they were. I also felt for Perry and his dad, with their rift. The secondary characters were all good and there are too many to mention by name that were well portrayed, they added a depth to the story.

I'm not even sure if my reviews are accurate anymore or if I'm just being swayed by my guilty pleasures, but honestly, what's the difference?

This book is a single story that used to be in a collection of fairy tales by Megan Derr. I don't know if she expanded it or if it was always more of a novella on its own, but it was definitely an enjoyable read.

The book tells the story of Bart, the oldest son of a lord who spends much of his time worrying about his friends and family and not enough time focusing on himself. When he discovers that there is a highwayman terrorizing his hometown, he returns to the family estate for the first time in years to identify the criminal and finally convince his father that is a worthy successor.

The mystery in this book, though not difficult to solve (it's a fairy tale after all) was fun and had some twists and turns. I enjoyed following Bart has he tried to solve the mystery and especially when he came into contact with a good friend that he hadn't been in many years. (Hint: He's attractive and makes Bart feel...things 😉).

It's not a perfect story, but hell, I had a good time and that is literally all that matters. Onto the next!

I liked the whole Deceiverd series, but not this book. I found something lacking. The whole friends first and than love, not so much. May be I had to high expectations about the Highwayman, ever I did experienced Dick Turpin. I found this Highwayman a little bit dull, the story was not exciting.
I read this e-book, glad I did not buy a paperback. I have book 1 and 3 and 4 in paperback and I love love them. The last book about F/F, I did not read.
So no re-read for me and 2 stars.

3.5+ stars, can easily be read as a standalone, you only need to know that as in most of Derr's stories sexuality is not really an issue in this fantasy historical setting.

Not one of my favourites by Derr, but still a lovely read. Bart was at times quite annoying, because his behaviour wasn't always the smartest, but I loved Perry and the plot itself was rather interesting.

Mystery, romance and derring do

Another good hit from this consistently strong storyteller. Bits of danger, satisfying redemption and slightly clueless lovers -- a good choice when you want some mystery mixed with your historical romance!

3.5 stars, rounding up - This was the last book in this series I hadn’t read (second book in the series). It never seems to go on sale, but I finally got it for half price on Smashwords. It is typical, classic Derr. I had a very good but not extraordinary time in this alt-Regency world.

DNF, bailed at 41%.

Well, I tried. Bart is not a character I can enjoy. But worse is when the apparent bad guy contradicts himself within a single scene. There's a lot to dislike about this story, but those two are a one-two punch and I'm out.

I gotta say that if Bart whined a little less about how his family treated him that would have been a solid 5 read! But the way Bart was complaining even in his own inner monologues was annoying.

I did loved Bart and Perry and I wish we had more about Alfred and Thaddeus!

I was disappointed in this one, not gonna lie. The mystery was very very slow and boring until everything is revealed at once without Bart doing anything to figure out things himself, he just asks best girl Rae to do it for him. The "romance" with Perry was honestly weird, I couldn't see them together at all, Perry was just too closed off and sad for them to have good chemistry either, and he's so mysterious you don't learn much about him until the end, which makes caring for him really hard. Bart speaks of their friendship like, as he's introduced and then drops a "I always loved you" bomb at the end when all I've seen is attraction coming from old memories and wants, nothing so deep as that.

The whole thing with the highwayman also makes it difficult to care about bc until you know who he is, you can't cheer for Perry and Bart bc he's got such a great chemisty with the highwayman, and there's red herrings about him being Burr as well, so you're stretched 3 ways about who Bart is going to end up with and it makes it impossible to enjoy the romance, for me, anyway.

The mystery was also unengaging because while there are mystery things like red herrings, you can't really figure anything for yourself until Rae just explains it to Bart. That's what makes Bart and Perry's relationship so annoying; the dude is a dead end. Bart gets literally nothing out of him until he's told everything by a third party, which doesn't really bind them together in any meaningful way. Come on like the two lovers cornering each other to spill their secrets is what people want dammit

I wish there had been more scenes of the highwayman bc he was honestly the best thing about this. The whole So yeah disappointed in this one, even the family stuff didn't get such a great conclusion.

This was awesome!

I don't usually write reviews, but seeing as how I've been addicted to Megan's work the last 4 years, I felt it was time. I truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and would not change a thing! A delightful read that went by way too fast, but in the best of ways. Thank you, Megan Derr, for all your gems. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to find another brilliant book by Megan Derr...

Perfect catch.

Bart sacrificed himself bending over backwards for family and friends, only to receive ridicule in return. With a highwayman loose he flees his family to take care of it, finding more trouble than he can handle. Didn’t like Father Thomas, that was cold. I liked the mother’s reaction. The story itself was sweet.
