Freed from the clutches of her cruel, traitorous mother and impostor husband, Lady Camden wants to rebuild her fractured life. But the years of terror and pain she endured at their hands continue to grip her heart in an iron vice. Refusing to stray from the refuge of her country estate, Kate tentatively agrees to an unusual alliance with the new Lord Camden, being mindful to keep her trust, and her heart, firmly safeguarded.

Adrien, the Earl of Camden, had lost everything he held dear while working undercover in France as an agent of the Crown, known only as Hawk. Now an earl, he wants only to repair his tattered, lonely life. His efforts are interrupted, however, when he is called to accept another assignment: Stop French spies from passing a bill in Parliament that will eliminate British aid in the war against Napoleon.

When Kate's past pulls her into a web of treachery and deceit, a life she is wholly unprepared for, Adrien must use any means necessary to stop the French spies from succeeding in their evil designs and keep her safe. When the truth is finally revealed, will Lady Camden be strong enough to seize her own future and happiness, or will her heart be too shattered to ever love a spy?

This is an interesting story, full of spies, romance, and intrigue. Each story in the series continues to build upon each other and delivers a great tale.

I've been curious about Kate's full story and was treating to the details in this book. She's had a very hard life, full of hatred and abuse and is now free. Kate is definitely a strong and brave woman and I loved watching her move on with her life. Adrien has also had a hard life--is being a spy ever easy?

I enjoyed the connection that Aiden and Kate shared, especially the tender romantic moments, but I felt like it moved a little fast,

This is a fairly fast-paced and intense spy novel, with great characters.

Content: mild romance; moderate violence

4.5 stars for the latest in The Beckett Files series. I really like this Regency spy series. Book #3 picks up just a short time after A Peculiar Courtship (The Beckett Files #2) ends. Lady Camden is finally free from her cruel husband who turned out to be, the French spy, Michel, not Matthew, the real Earl of Camden. She's at her country estate where she can heal emotionally and physically away from the gossip of the Tabbies, and the prying eyes of the Ton.

Adrien Stanton is the new Earl of Camden. He has spent years working for the Crown undercover in France (known only as Hawk), and now has no family left. All he wants is to try to repair the damage done by the fake Earl of Camden--hiring back the staff at Pratt Hall, repairing the residence, and helping rebuild the village which had been neglected. In addition to all of this he's given a new assignment--stop the French spies from passing a bill in Parliament to stop British aid in the war with Napoleon. He and Benedict must find the spies and who's behind the conspiracy.

Kate (Lady Camden) and Adrien are kind of thrown together as she is still the Countess of Camden. He wants to sell the country estate but she feels more like herself there than in London living with Eliza and Benedict. Kate is Eliza's sister and she doesn't yet know that Eliza is a spy.

I loved Adrien. He's a good man who had left his family to serve his country, and now that he was back in England they were all gone, and he was alone except for his fellow spies Benedict, Eliza, and Jonathon. I loved his humor and wit, especially his banter with Benedict. I couldn't decide if they were frenemies or if there was a bromance there--my favorite part was when he decided Benedict's code name should be "sunshine". Lol. He was going to be a wonderful Earl if the way he helped the village by his country estate was any indication. He was kind and caring especially towards Kate when he realized how badly Michel had treated her both emotionally and physically.

Kate has a lot to overcome--her mother belittled her and then basically forced her to marry Michel, who Kate believed was the Earl of Camden. Once they were married he mistreated her physically and cheated on her constantly. Now that her mother and Michel are gone she has to learn to put all of that behind her. They didn't have counseling back then so it was up to her family to help put all those horrible years of abuse behind her. One of the best scenes is when Adrien has her go barefoot in the stream. It's such a simple thing but it's something she's never done and brought her such joy. I love that despite all Kate's been through, she's so compassionate towards the women Michel used and discarded.

This books has it all--intrigue, spies, romance, some perilous situations. It kept me reading to find out who the big bad behind it was and how were the good guys going to get the best of him. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

The romance is mild but there is some violent situations but nothing I thought was overly graphic.

Read this entire review here: TO LOVE A SPY BOOK REVIEW – AN APPEALING REGENCY ROMANCE

Review by Catherine

Overall Rating = 4; Romance Rating = 4

(I received a free copy of To Love a Spy from the author, Laura Beers, to write an honest review on The Silver Petticoat Review. I was not financially compensated for this post and all opinions are my own.)

In the third installment of her romantic regency spy series, Laura Beers delivers what is arguably her best story yet. Beers deftly balances romance and mystery while adding depth to her characters. To Love a Spy moves neatly between Adrien’s mission and his and Kate’s budding romance. Furthermore, Kate’s story and identity do not get lost in the mix. As a result, Beers moves her story forward fluidly without sacrificing plot or character development.

However, I must point out, that it is in Kate’s story Beers truly shines. Beers gives due consideration to the trauma of Kate’s past. But, she does not drown Kate in it. Instead, it is very much two steps forward, one step back. Moreover, Kate’s story blends beautifully with Adrien’s. For Kate is not the only one with demons. These personal struggles and triumphs also compliment a well-paced mystery. Indeed, the political intrigue of To Love a Spy is my favorite story line of The Beckett Files series.

Rounding out the story are secondary characters we all know and love. Benedict and Eliza feature prominently. Yet, they do not steal the focus from Adrien and Kate. Rather, they become part of their story. By no means are they simply props. Benedict and Eliza serve a purpose to Kate and Adrien’s development as well as the action.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON TO LOVE A SPY

In her debut story, Saving Shadow, Beers’ writing, while solid, faltered in places. In To Love a Spy, Beers has found her stride. Adrien and Kate’s love story weaves in flawlessly with a suspenseful mystery.

To Love a Spy focused tightly on well-developed characters and a believable plot. Not to mention swoon-worthy romantic moments between Adrien and Kate! Better yet, we get more than a glimpse of Benedict and Eliza’s life and it remains sweetly romantic! Regency romance fans, take note! Laura Beers and her Beckett Files series are truly a treat!

Laura Beers has introduced me to the world of Regency Romance and I have fallen head over heels in love with the entire Beckett family! To Love a Spy is filled with twists turns and a sweet romance.

Adrien has lived the lonely life of a spy for many years and he isn't used to having someone he cares for or that cares for him, since the French had murdered the rest of his family while he was deep undercover. That is until, he meets Lady Camden.

Kate, Lady Camden, has been oppressed by her mother and former husband, who were French spies that had infiltrated England to sway Parliament. After the abuse she had endured Kate struggled to trust, especially men, and escaped back to her country home as a refuge.

The sweet budding relationship between Kate and Adrien had me swooning in such a way that you wouldn't believe that kissing and climbing trees could do. It's the simple gestures of courting that really has me falling hard and fast for their relationship. You add in the intrigue and the lies, scandal and murders, that turns this sweet romance up a notch and you don't want to put the book down.

To Love a Spy will keep you turning pages to the end and you keep you on your toes with shocking revelations and the need to know what comes next in the The Beckett Files.

This is the 3rd book in this series, and features Shadow’s sister, Kate, and notorious spy, Hawk, who served in France for the last two books. His name is Lord Adrian Camden, and ironically, Kate was married to the imposter Lord Camden who killed Adrian’s whole family while he served his country as a spy. She has trust issues. Adrian wants to marry her. This has an intricate plot with lots of twists and turns, dangers, intrigue, mystery, and villains. This author knows how to hold my interest and write captivating action-filled stories with characters that always surprise me. Kate seems so naïve, weak, and makes stupid decisions for the first half of the book, but she gains strength and her transformation is sweet to see. The one thing that doesn’t quite strike me as real in these Regency stories is how strong the women are—as strong as the men many times—and how many rules the couples break in that time period, but it’s an entertaining story. The romance is steamy but clean.

Yet another excellent regency romance spy novel comes from Laura Beers in her novel To Love a Spy. More great characters, some from her previous two novels Saving Shadow and A Peculiar Courtship show up in this novel too. Just as exciting and thrilling as the previous books in the Beckett Files series, readers will not want to put this exhilarating story down! There is plenty of excitement and sweet romance in this story, along with superb characters, to keep readers coming back for more. Like the other books in this series, there is a bit of violence, but it is not descriptive or gory. This is a story that readers will not soon forget and will definitely want to get their hands on!!

This series just gets better and better! I love me some romance, but when you combine it with mystery and adventure, you've got a winner. I love how strong the heroines are and how valiant the heroes are. Kate was awesome. She was so incredibly wounded as a result of her years of abuse, but she was incredibly brave. After seeing how damaged she was in the previous books, it was so deeply satisfying to see her on her own two feet and fighting back. And Adrien (le sigh) was so patient and gentle that you couldn't help but adore him. I've enjoyed every couple in this series, but these two were definitely my favorite. I can't wait to see what comes next!

A mystery that I seem to be reading backwards. Somehow that did not ruin it for me. I enjoy the banter and thought process as we work together to discover the bad guys. I am still intrigued enough to be interested in reading the first book in this series. Lol!

Lady Elizabeth Beckett's sister, Lady Kate Camden has finally been released from the clutches of her fake and abusive marriage to the French spy posing as Lord Camden. Kate is now learning how to live independently and trust the people around her. Kate has made a refuge for herself at her country estate and is being protected by Adrien, Earl of Camden and Agent of the Crown. Adrien wants to help Kate come out of her shell; he is desperately trying to break in, but is falling for her at the same time. Meanwhile, Adrien, Eliza and Johnathan receive a new assignment as Agents of the Crown. The British have been warring with Napoleon and it seems as though French spies have introduced a bill to Parliament to end the War against the French. The French have been abducting female relations of Parliament members in order to force the vote in their favor. After some digging, it seems that Kate holds the key to eliminating the French spies, but she and Eliza are abducted soon after the conspiracy is broken.

To Love A Spy continues the story of the Beckett family with Eliza's sister Kate. I love that these are a perfect blend of historical spy thriller and regency romance with well balance scenes of sweet adoration and action-packed danger. Kate has made appearances in the past two books in the series, but we now learn what a tremendous impact her false marriage to a French spy has made on her life. I enjoyed seeing Kate's transformation from someone terrified to leave her country manor and untrusting of anyone but her own staff to someone who is independent, advocates for herself and contributes ideas. The romance was infatuating and wholesome with a lot of respect from both sides. Through his courtship of Kate, I got to know Adrien's character better and his abilities as a spy. It was interesting to find out about his time in France and how he carried out his present mission. My favorite part, however, was continuing to see how Eliza's life is now with Benedict and how she and Kate were able to navigate through the French spy ring. Overall, To Love A Spy is a wonderful read with plenty of romance, surprises and spy operations. I highly recommend reading the first two books in the Beckett Files first, it is a wonderful series to dive into.

To Love a Spy is the third book in The Beckett Files series. I read the first book Saving Shadow and the second book A Peculiar Courtship, both of which I enjoyed. These books are Regency spy romances and they are fun. In this third instalment, we follow the romance of Kate and Adrien. Kate is the sister of Elizabeth (the notorious spy Shadow) the main character in the first book, who is also part of this story. So although To Love a Spy is a stand-alone novel, I enjoyed having read the first two books that gave me a background into the secondary characters.

Both Kate and Adrien are drawn to each other because they have both suffered great losses. Kate needs to learn to trust men after having been treated cruelly by her late husband. Adrien, a forthright man, needs to learn to reign in his feelings of revenge. She and Adrien form a friendship that quickly turns to a romantic liaison. I would have liked for this to have proceeded at a slower rate given Kate's situation as a woman who suffered conjugal violence.

The plot thread from the previous book about the scheme to take down the English government from French spies within the establishment was explored but the main villain got away in the end and, I have no doubt, will be making an appearance in the next book. More spy missions to look forward to reading!

Once again, I liked this clean romance and the cast of characters that I grew fond of in the first two books. This was a quick enjoyable read and I liked it slightly more than the second book because of the topic of conjugal violence and the ending which I found touching. Despite the heavier emotional content, the author kept the book light. The prevailing topic of good conquering evil that permeates every book makes this series feel-good books.

A Tangled Ruse is the next book in the series and I am already anticipating more fun adventures and escapades with this clan of spy men and their strong women.

While I think the first book is my favorite so far in this series, Laura crafts another solid story. This wraps up some lingering questions for the family's past and present, and delves deeper into who is behind the plot to put the French as spies in Parliament. But, we end up with one escaping, so I'm thinking there has to be a fourth to bring the scalawag in.

I related to Kate and wanted to cheer her on, but at the same time, as is often the case in recovering from tragic events, when she swings the other way and starts assuming things rather than just having a conversation with Adrien drives me nuts. I suppose it brings down the drama of the book if they just sat down and talked it out, using good communication skills, how much smoother it would've been! Since hubs and I play this dance a couple times a week, it's one I understand why, and EVERY TIME I'm like "we should just talk about it!" But then we don't....circle....

Overall a fab read with our favorite spy Adrien. There is one moment where his very dangerous side comes out and it made me a bit squeamish, but it also told me so much about him as a character that the strong language wouldn't have accomplished without the actions. (explaining without spoilers is hard!)

I was very happy that I moved it straight to the top of my TBR pile because it was totally worth it.

How long until we get another book, Laura?!!!!

I am really enjoying this Regency spy series; ‘To Love a Spy’ is #3. This sequel is the story of Kate, who was married to the evil imposter of Lord Camden. She was an abused wife and has been set up by French spies to achieve their selfish political gains for Napoleon. Fortunately, Kate is also related to a powerful English spy ring that works for the Crown. Her protector is agent Adrien, as known as ‘Hawk’, and the Earl of Camden. It doesn’t take long for the two to connect on a very personal level, but that is secondary to the havoc that mysterious French spies are creating around them.

The plot involves all the principle agents that we know in books #1 & #2, including Eliza, aka agent ‘Shadow’. The French spies are contriving to manipulate Parliament into voting to end the British fight against Napoleon. They will stop at nothing, including kidnapping prominent English women to blackmail votes.

After reading the first one, ‘Saving Shadow’, author Laura Beers has really hooked me with these characters, the history timeframe, the incredible spy ring, and of course, the romance. Even though this is my third favorite so far, I will anxiously start #4 this afternoon; obligations must take priority till then…

Must comment here that one of my favorite parts in this book was how Adrien solved the problem of consulting with fellow agent and neighbor, Benedict, as French spies hung about outside - hilarious! (Also loved the spy nickname Adrien gave Benedict!)

As always Laura will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat as you are thrown into yet another thrilling spy adventure! This one continues not long after the ending of the last one and brings everyone together again. Its not only the journey of catching the spies but of learning to love and trust again. I was hooked from the start because it was clear that he loved her and wanted to help her in every way. In no way did I see who was behind everything or the crazy reasons for some of it coming. The wedding scene tops all others I have loved with its own little twists. Serious book hangover with this one and hope there is more to the series soon.

Kate is stronger than she realizes and needs help to find her voice again. Her emotions and trauma of what happened rule her at times, but she is a favorite of mine. She didn't wither away and everyone around her wanted to help her. I loved when she started acting like a spy without fulling realizing it.

Adrien wears his heart on his sleeve without knowing it. I loved how thought about things and his use of a sledgehammer made him a favorite. He could so easily transform and convince people of anything that you almost believe it yourself. When did what he did before the wedding I loved him more.

This is a must read series!

To Love A Spy, by Laura Beers.
A great story. Too bad I read the last one first. Now I have to go back to the beginning of the series (which I have already done) to pick up the thread of the narrative. Don't usually do this, but this story is so well written that I can't bear to have missed other parts of it.

The love story between the abused Kate (who was married to a very abusive French spy without knowing it) and the British agent Adrien is carefully and tenderly told. Kate, who is suffering from terrible abuse in a forced marriage is wary of all men. She feels she can't trust any of them to not be abusive. Adrien is sensitive to her agony and sets out to slowly win her trust. It's a tough road, and nearly winds up a disaster because Adrien's duties as a spy require him to court another woman.

The result if a great love story set against a French plot to get the British government to vote against funding the war with Napoleon, and a back-door invasion of the island through Scotland by crack French troops. It's a page turner right to the end, with many daughters of British aristocrats, including Kate and her twin sister Eliza (also a crown agent) among the hostages abducted by French agents to ensure passage of the vote goes against the war, and success of the French invasion.

The whole thing is a believable scenario, and brilliantly written by Laura Beers. Looking forward to backtracking to the rest of the series.

I loved this book! It continued the same overarching story line from the first two in the series, but certainly could be read on its own (although I have no idea why anyone wouldn’t want to read books 1 & 2). Kate’s healing as a victim of abuse was inspiring and very well-done. I also enjoyed the evolution of Kate and Adrien’s relationship from business to friendship to romantic. And the bantering among the various characters is the perfect mood-lightener.

After the death of her traitor husband, Kate has to deal with the scars, emotional and physical, from years of abuse. She enjoys the company of Adrien Stanton, a handsome spy whose assignments have brought him in close contact with her family, but is afraid to open herself to him. She believes all men will eventually become unfaithful and abusive, and wants to protect herself. Gradually, Adrien’s kindness begins to heal her broken heart, if she can only bring herself to trust him.

This book does have some violence, including hints at torture. A main character threatens to harm a captured spy to force information, but it doesn’t go very far before another main character stops him.

All in all, another great book from Laura Beers! Would highly recommend!

Fantastic Regency Spy Novel!

I really loved this third book in The Beckett Files series! It combines some of my favorite elements- clean romance, suspense, danger, and the Regency era.

I absolutely loved Kate. We are first introduced to her in the previous book, and her situation is heartbreaking. This book continues to show how much she was hurt by people that should have loved and protected her. Although she was hurt emotionally and physically for years, she continues to have a tender heart and an inner strength that comes out the more she befriends Adrien. When the threats and danger become very real again in her life, she steps up and shows her incredible strength.

And wow, Adrien was a perfect swoon-worthy hero!!! He is fierce and quite an incredible spy, but has such a gentleness and tenderness with Kate that is so endearing. I loved how he encouraged and praised her. And when danger comes to Kate and others he cares about, he doesn’t hesitate to put himself in the line of fire to help. Their romance was so sweet, and with characters from the other books interwoven in, it made for a great story!

Definitely a great story- but make sure to read these books in order (you’ll want to anyways, as they’re all great!). Can’t wait to read the next one!!

Overall Review:
To Love a Spy is an enchanting Regency-period spy romance from author Laura Beers. Fast-paced and full of thrills, the novel follows a continuing story arc about a dastardly French spy ring trying to bring down the English government during the Napoleonic Wars. The English agents protecting their country are the protagionists in this entertaining series. Readers do not need to read Beers' previous books to enjoy To Love a Spy, but it is highly recommended since each story is extremely well-written and fun! Beers creates a beloved heroine with stunning personal growth in main character Kate. In the beginning Kate is timid and worrisome but transforms into a strong woman who is able to rescue not only herself, but others. Like any good romance, there are many heart-fluttering scenes. The story's ending sets up for another exciting adventure. Reading To Love a Spy is an excellent way to spend an afternoon!

OK, so I start to see a pattern here. At the beginning the love story starts, then comes danger and the inception of the action, then we usually have the death of a friend (and some more killings), then the saving of the heroine in danger and the solving of the puzzle and finally the outcome of the love story. So this series has mild romance stories, but with quite some talk of infidelity, lovers, some killings, fights, peril. Kate was an interesting character - she starts as timid and fearful, but by the end we see a big transformation in her general attitude. Adrien is the first spy in the series who actually felt like a spy for me - he was able to dome a totally different persona while performing his missions and acted the way I imagine a spy would act. so, yeah. By now I am quite addicted to the characters in this series and continue next to Luke and Rachel's story.
Narrative: 3rd person following Kate and Adrien
Sensuality: mild romance
Religion: none
Other: some violence, killings, description of interrogation results

Loved It!

I have been waiting for Kate's story since Book 2 where we get a glimpse of Kate's sad story. Aiden was the perfect friend to help her find herself among all the lies and deceit surrounding her life. Aiden is a master at spying but when it comes to Kate, she sees the real him.

Their story was awesome to read. Laura Beers has a way of making her stories full of adventure, danger, mystery, and good clean romance. I would highly recommend this story for a perfect getaway. I started it this morning and could not put it down. It pulled me in. You can read it on it's own but I would read the first and second one first. It helps with the secondary characters and everyone needs a little bit of Sunshine (made me laugh) and shadow in their lives.

Soo I now binged the whole series as far as it exists (hopefully we will hear Miss Colette's story... and this is not the end...)

I really loved this series... I usally tend to read more the classical regency romance books but I couldnt stop reading here. I loved Laura Beers writing style which was amazing, I loved how she was able to wave the spy story and the romance story elements together and create one , no several facinating books. I also adored all the side characters which we could mostly revisit in later books (where they were the main leads) and which all were absolutely incredibly well developped... You could really feel the different vibes of the characters flowing off the pages. I also loved the bromance which developped as the series got along...

This book To love a Spy was amazing and my favourite of the series... my favourite part was Benedict getting named Sunshine... but also how Adrien and Kate work on trusting eachother and solving the spy mystery...

If you need some whimsical tree climbing and barefoot walking, making up for a lost childhood you want this one!

Given what Kate has lived through she shows us what resilience is! Courage to act even if scared. How to grow as a person without losing yourself, bold without losing sweetness.

Adrien was so funny, loved his sense of humor. From nicknaming people to waiting by the kitchen door to demonstrate his spying skills, he’s a wonderful addition to the gang.

Make sure you read it in order (this is 3rd, Saving Shadow is the first)
Spice - Moderate (Clean, Makeouts)
Language - Mild
Violence - Moderate

Genre: Historical Romance
Rating: 4.25/5 ⭐️
Spice: 0/5 🧼

Summary: Lady Camden is finally free from her cruel husband and ready to rebuild her life. The new Lord Camden wants to protect her but she views his attempts as another example of a man trying to control her. She soon finds herself a target and has no choice but to lean on him for help.

Thoughts: I loved this one. The way the author makes Kate go through a healing process, leaning on Adrien but still building her independent spirit was phenomenal.

There were twists and turns that I didn’t expect. I will say, some of the twists weren’t explained fully and it led me to be a bit confused. Definitely felt a little chaotic at times. But overall, this was such a good one with great suspense.

5 stars! I loved this book and couldn't put it down. After reading Ms. Beers' first two books of the series, I didn't think I could like book #3 as much. But I was wrong.
I found myself laughing at the witty banter, crying at poor Kate's story and cheering at the ending. The author did an amazing job of making Kate strong. Also, Adrien was a hardened spy and nothing came before his duty as an agent of the crown. At least until Kate. He had his own unique journey as well.

Great book! I highly recommend it. Buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Sometimes, I want to smack characters upside their heads because they can be so clueless and overreactive. This was this book. It's a cute story that picks up after the last book, A Peculiar Courtship, but I feel like the author made this particular female protagonist a little too immature for her "age" and experience. I pictured her like a little scared puppy in the corner with sad eyes the whole time. I think I would have liked it better had she had a little bit more "gumption", thus the 3 stars. That said, it was a fun, cute read. I really like the series. I really enjoyed the chemistry between the 2 protagonists.

To Love a Spy... The Beckett Files #3

It's rare for me to give 5 Stars to every single book of a series but I LOVE every one of them and I love how author Laura Beers incorporates all of the people from the previous books into the current book and I am enjoying all of the strength that each heroine realizes she has... It's such a great change of pace to have strong women as the main hero who saves the day... I'm ready to start on book 4 of this series and I hope everyone who reads this review will go and download book 1 to get started on this exciting series! Good reading! 🤗

Kate is in no state to mourn her deceased husband or mother. Free from their cruel words and her years of abuse she just wants to be left alone to heal. Adrian is home from years as a spy in the French navy known onlyas Hawk.is entire family has been murdered while he served the king and his English bloodline. Now he has a empty title ad no family. The only person who has even the slightest interest in has no interest in him.
Trying to fill the void left in the place where a heart should be in these two individuals will take time and patience.

A waste of time

This is the first book I have read by this author. If you are 12 years old, you will enjoy this book. Anyone older than that will not. The author has created a heroine that is stupid ,stubborn, shallow and weak. I personally do not like the main female character to have no appeal. The hero is not believable either but more so than the heroine. I have no desire to read anything else by Beers.
