A stand alone Sword and Sorcery story that can be read at any point in the series!
Timothy Golden Boy O’Connor chose a life of piracy over a life at the seminary. When he and the crew of the Sea Maggot are cornered by Brynth’s navy, outnumbered and outgunned, O’Connor is forced to prove his bones and carve his place into the annals of outlaw history next to his comrades, the ship’s mythic mage, and their fabled captain. When the cannons have been fired, when the blades have sung their song, when the smoke clears, will a legend rise or will only death linger?
A fantasy adventure for fans of Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss and Andrzej Sapkowski!
Dylan Doose is the author of the Legendary and Sword & Sorcery series. He writes full-time in his home by the lake in Southern Ontario.
When he's not writing, he's reading or watching his favorite science fiction, fantasy, or horror story (of which there are many) play out.
Inspired by classics like Conan the Barbarian and modern masterpieces like Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself, Dylan Doose delivers enjoyable, fast-paced, page-turning grimdark fantasy that is not for the faint of heart.
A quick story about pirates, or freedom fighters - depending on your point of view. We see a different group of fighters allied against the evil Brynth empire. Unfortunately the author toggles scenes completely unexpectedly. We are one or two paragraphs on before it is obvious he is talking about another character in this flow fighters. The story travels across three sets of sea captains, but it is up to us to figure out which captain and which person he is talking about.
4 STARS for Dylan Doose for I Remember My First Time, this is an intense frantic almost told story of the first time the Blood Lust came upon a person in full minute detail. These men & women are of all races against slavery fighting to maintain their freedom often against those that had enslaved them. Wild, strong who practice their craft especially those who stay and progress on the Sea Magot telling their story of "I Remember My First Time....... as a way to get the groups blood rising on the way, in the dream for the many in a huge multi Bloodlust. WARNING: 18 & up mature language
So I read this little book. It was only 38 pages. It was exactly as titled, Sword and Sorcery. There were monumental battles on the high seas and on the shore in the pirates fort. The first time was by several different ranks, from the different Captains, first mates and down. The first time was the first kill all had remembered but had forgotten the many kills after. Hmmmm. Not exactly my cup of tea.
The primary complaint with this story is that I want more! Just when the story gets really interesting it ended! Well worth the read even still. There was a small section about 3/4th thru the book that used quotes at odd places, but I really enjoyed the story.
I liked this short story, with its fast paced and cadance of story telling, while introducing characters along the way. There where a few errors but it was short and sweet.
I enjoyed the transitioning of one captain to the next through using the first person narrative; maintaining the intensity required throughout the process was masterful.
This was the first book that I have read from Dylan and in an overall I have enjoy it very much. He has a very easy writing that can take you to the middle of the action. This book has shown me a new writer that I will follow and read more of his books.
This was an enjoyable short story. If I had one criticism, it would be that there was a flashback right at the ending. It threw off the pacing of the end, but not overly so. Overall, it is a good read.
Extreme, descriptive, war, bloody battles, cursing, swash-buckling, high seas pirate adventure. Well written and puts the reader in the middle of the fray with savers and pistols and muskets ready to fight for the good of Cap'n And fellow crew.
I Remember My First Time: A Sword and Sorcery Story (Sword and Sorcery #2.5) by Dylan Doose – I do occasionally gripe about how men write female characters, but I have no complaints on this kickass captain and her colorful crew! Enjoy this swashbuckling short! Happy Reading!
This story is well written and nicely presented inside and out. Big ups to the author for such a polished offering. This short episode serves as an introduction to the world and characters. Imagine a fantasy world which takes Treasure Island and introduces wizards wielding elemental magic (and axes, a refreshing change to the ones carrying staves), mythological creatures, eight pound cannons and the metric system (not sure how that got there but never mind).
The story follows two related accounts of battles between some pirates and the Purplecoats. Not sure what they were fighting about other than the usual thing but I’m sure that gets explained in the novels. There’s plenty of action, explicit violence and strong language, so it’s not suitable for all readers. If you like a bit of blood ‘n’ guts (ah harrrrr!!!) then this’ll be your mug of rum. I’d have liked a few more twists and turns in the plot, which is otherwise fairly straight forward, but I’ll check out more by Dylan Doose based on this short story.
I really liked this story, so don't let the 4/5 fool you, it falls somewhere between four and five for me. Don't let the cover fool you either. I though this was going to be horror (no prior knowledge of the author) and it's Historical Fantasy. The writing lost me in a couple places, so I had to go back and re-read a few paragraphs, but overall cool story. The ending is very satisfying, which is a hard quality to locate in short fiction. Kudos Dylan, keep writing stories.
I had no idea what to expect when I stumbled upon this gem. From the beginning, the author's descriptive narrative pulls you in and refuses to let you go. I'm a huge fan of the fantasy genre and this didn't disappoint! If you're looking for a short read painted as meticulously as a Van Gogh, look no further! I look forward to acquainting myself with this author's other works.
The cover initially drew me in but the story captured me. This is a short story encompassing Golden Boy, Wallace, the Captains, a Mage, and the Sea Maggot. Brilliantly told- I will definitely be seeking out the Sword and Sorcery series.
Short and exciting. This is a side story to the series and it gives a good preview of the style, the action and the talent of the author. Nothing wrong with this short story, it gives you enough to make you want to embark in the series.
This book was all that you'd expect from a pirate story. I read it before book 3 so I'm hopeful The Pyres will make the connection to the golden boy. The combination of industry has made the ships formidable so hand to hand sword fighting is still necessary and are fun to read.
