A looming alien horde. A buried alien weapon. One last chance to save humanity. Liam Hoffen and his crew may have squashed a few alien bugs, but they’re nowhere near ready for the coming swarm. Left for dead on a backwater planet, Liam must crawl through ancient alien ruins in search of an advanced weapon. Piecing it together is the only way to hold the Kroerak forces at bay until reinforcements arrive… if they arrive at all.
Marny Bertrand has never left a crewmember behind, and she’s not about to start now. When she discovers Liam is still alive, she'll put everything on the line and mount a reckless rescue mission. If she can’t reach her stranded crew before their defenses fall, enemy droves will get their claws on the only weapon capable of saving humanity.

The characters here are back to their normal attitudes and personalities...thankfully. It is the characters that hold this entire thing together in my opinion. Without them and their expected personalities and how they interact with one another this would be a completely different reading experience. That is the case for all books, but even more so here with all the issues that pop up through the past few books. Sadly I'm guessing the next book will have some sort of congruity issues if the pattern holds.
It is an interesting read, but again only based on space and ground combat which mainly revolves around luck. The trading and company building is clearly a thing for the past...probably forever.
Overall this book seems to be an improvement on the previous, but not by much. It is still only a series about a prolonged war with the bug aliens where everything gets destroyed, always managing to leave just enough behind to hardly keep going. This isn't a spoiler because it is the plot of every book so far, and not much changes. They get something, that something is destroyed and they have to start over. Then when things are going okay of course it all fails. Rinse and repeat until the book is over.
The book all of a sudden having what appears to be a super natural aspect on book fourteen is...well it is absurd. If it was ever foreshadowed it was so subtle that I never picked up on anything. Since other world concepts were dropped out of the blue, my guess is this is just another being used to advance the plot. I don't like how it is done, but it seems it's the way the series is now going. If it is technology so high it appears as magic then that is better, but still out of the blue.
There isn't much more to say...I'm simply reading because I'm invested and want to see where it all goes.
"Frak girl, dial it back a notch," Ada interjected. "Don't get me wrong, I'm digging the attitude, but you're definitely riding a wave of the angries."
Ada is coming into her own. I really hope she meets a good match at some stage.
And Marny is still cool, even if her character is changing...
"You cannot believe how bad I have to pee," Marny said. Ada guffawed. "And just like that, the image is shattered."
Still loving Johnathan...
Do not despair, Sendrei Buhari. There are only seven-hundred-twelve remaining items requiring your attention. We estimate you will resolve these issues within eighteen days.
The Felio are cool in a scary warrior-cat-like way...
Four and a half stars. This book doesn't offer much in character development. There was a nice change of focus onto Marney for a portion of the story. Even this was more highlighting a change of circumstance than real character development.
There were some very interesting twists in the story line that set things up for a thrilling conclusion. This would only get three stars as a stand alone book, but as the middle of a trilogy it was pretty good. The action and pacing made the book hard to put down and just as soon as you think you've got things figured out there is just a little more intrigue thrown in. A very fun, fast read.
I have read the entire series, reviewing just one book just doesn't do the series justice. Jamie McFarlane has created one of the best space operas I have ever read. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. I strongly recommend starting with the first book, Rookie Privateer, to really get the feel of the characters as they grow. The development throughout the series is worth it. His extrapolation of current technology adds a level of plausibility many space operas lack. Each book is plot-driven, flows well, advances the overall series arc. If you are a fan of space opera's this series is written for you.
Book 14 in the Privateer Tales continues with Liam Hoffen and part of his crew on a planet that they must defend at all costs. The fearsome Kroerak are advancing, and this world’s native population has a weapon to defeat them. But will Liam get it operational before the enemy swarms their position? Or can he push them off long enough for reinforcements to arrive? This book is another page-turner that makes me eager for the sequel.
Liam and crew must protect a race from extermination by the Kroerak. Peril is constant as Marny and her allies race to bring needed power and resources to the fight. I like the action, humor, and romance. Will Tabby and Liam follow Marny and Nick's example? Will they be in time to save their friends, family, and others from the Kroreak? I look forward to the next book.
... that’s another fine mess you gotten us out of ...
Once again the Privateers take on the baddies in the universe with great style and gusto. So enjoying this series. Great set of hero characters, every one a gem! Waiting to hear the publication date for the next ‘BOLD’ adventure. Hope it soon!
My only problem is that there's not like 40 on the series and there already done! Any me. McFarlane as usual your work is a diamond in a world full of coal. Thank you sir for this extroidinary ride You've taken us on. People if you like sci fi, you'll love this authors work... All his stories are really great.
For excitement, complex characters, and plot this series is a winner. I thought Liam's use of 20th century rock was a bit unrealistic, but what the heck. This series is sort of a Firefly with balls. Once you start reading it's impossible to stop. I would recommend this series to anyone.
Another great story in the Privateer universe! Our heros are stuck on the ground and against tens of thousands of bugs. Rescue is coming. But, the duplicitous Strix are up to no good again. Fast paced with lots of action, you won't want to put it down.
By now, at book 14, if you are not eating the books a 4 or a 5 you a a masochist. I have all 19 (so far ,the entire set) so I'm happily ploughing my way through them. I wouldn't really consider most of the books stand alone. To me, it's just a long enjoyable story. Says a lot for the writer that I'm not bored after so many, one directly after the other!
A wonderful adventure as always. The privateer universe is a great escape. The science and technology is very convincing and very possible. Jamie McFarlane has created a real gem. I am looking forward to seeing this turned into a TV series.
This was a good ending to the current trouble on piscas. Look forward to the continuation of the right and to see what has happened in the rest of the systems.
Jamie keeps my blood pumping. Can't put him down, but can't seem to slow down, and then I suffer withdrawal pains until his next installment. Kinda like the stories too. Characters are solid and ... human, regardless of species. Plots are superbly woven and embellished. Bring him on.
I'm a big Jamie McFarlane fan and he comes through again with Fury of the Bold. Another good entry in the Privateer Tales universe, he keeps the action going and the series entertaining. Looking forward to reading the final entry of this internal series trilogy, Judgment of the Bold.
Liam finds a weapon that can stop the bugs. Many battles with many dead and a crystal power source is found that exponentially increase a weapons during power.
This was a Great read. The characters are well thought out, and the story just moves right along to a dramatic finish. You'll love this and you'll be turning pages without even thinking. Great Reading Everyone!
In this book prejudices are acknowledged while being dismissed as irrelevant to a person's worth. A person is a person no matter how small, furry, female, or old.
This is by far the best book, not that the others aren’t also excellent, but this one stands apart. Perhaps it’s the military angle, but you seriously get the battle excitement in this one. I think mr McFarlane understands.
Looking forward to reading the third book in this series. Personally this is one of the best series of books I ever read. I like to escape from reality when reading, I have enough "reality" in every day life. Thank you Jamie McFarlane for this escape!
I keep seeing Captain James T Kirk in Liam Hidden with his bevy of beautiful and strong women while Nick James carries off a delightful combination of Spock and Bones. Hat tip to Scotty when Roby of Engineering speaks. Pleasure to read
I'm having so much fun reading this series of books. I love all the characters in the books. The main characters are really enjoyable. But all the side characters have their own personalities and back stories as well. Really enjoyed all these books.
Hot Damn, great read, the Loose Nuts crew in another adventure, across space, whooping up on human eating crab aliens and they have feline alien allies!
