Such A Deal: Three Nice Jewish Detectives

Rate this book
SUCH A Three Nice Jewish Detectives (And A Bonus!) An anthology containing one each from THREE top-rated sleuth series by best-selling authors Shelley Singer, Julie Smith, and Dick Cluster, PLUS award-winning author Patty Friedmann’s powerful and emotional autobiographical novel. Editor's This book contains four complete novels. Volume 1 is SAMSON’S DEAL, the FIRST book in the hard-boiled but “wonderfully wry” adventures of ex-cop Jake Samson by award-winning author Shelley Singer. “Breathtaking action is offset by the wise-cracking Jake and Rosie. The tension will keep you reading all night long. Compelling characterization by Singer makes this series a must-read, with authentic details and witty dialogue.” -Mystery Time MURDER, POLITICS, AND STRANGE BEDFELLOWS... Ex-Chicago-cop Jake Samson’s likely to lead with his easy-going Columbo style, but he’s earned a reputation for being a tough guy who occasionally “handles discreet matters.” Samson is drawn into Berkeley’s political hotbed when an old friend—a progressive political science professor—calls with an enticing offer. Seems the professor's wife was found dead in the backyard of their Berkeley home, and he wants to pay Jake ten thousand dollars (plus expenses) to figure out whodunit. With his good friend Rosie, and her justice-dispensing two-by-four, Samson follows a twisted trail that leads through the Bay Area's bizarre cultural labyrinth, from pop meditation ashrams to neo-Nazi rallies, to the startling but all too human truth. Volume 2 is SOURDOUGH WARS,the SECOND book in Edgar-winner Julie Smith's series featuring funny, lively lawyer Rebecca Schwartz. “…an awful lot of fun, and it will make you unbearably hungry for fresh-baked bread.” -San Jose Mercury-News TO YOU, ITS JUST A FROZEN LUMP OF DOUGH; TO SOME, IT'S LIFE AND DEATH... Someone would even kill for it. And does.Enter lawyer sleuth Rebecca Schwartz, whose client is her own partner, glamorous Chris Nicholson, main squeeze of sourdough bakery scion Peter Martinelli, who plans to auction off his family’s fabled sourdough starter. Rebecca noshes her way through the case in hilariously unorthodox style, tasting some great bread along the way, but also uncovering so many ancient jealousies, long-simmering feuds, and seething resentments that she barely escapes death by doughball. Volume 3 is RETURN TO SENDER, the FIRST Alex Glauberman mysteryHE WENT TO THE POST OFFICE…AND ENDED UP IN BERLIN "Raises the mystery to the realm of literature." –Tony Hillerman Meet reluctant detective Alex Glauberman—just a guy who fixes foreign cars, a 41-year-old divorced father with a brilliant British girl friend. But he’s got a complication right now—he’s trying to survive chemo. And then Gerald Meyer, a stranger he meets at the P.O., asks him to mail a package to Meyer’s daughter. Easily done, but too late, Meyer changes his mind. And turns up dead.

Saved the best for last

I enjoyed all 3 books, but by the time I got thru the last story, I couldn't remember what the other stories were about. The last story about Bernie, his wife, daughter, mother in law, was very, very good. The characters were well drawn. The mother in law, and father in law were odious people, and so sick they couldn't see how they made others feel. The mean girls were also snide and hateful. I wanted to see something serious happen to them, but the story was over. I wanted it to go on.

Compendium

This is a mixture of 4 different stories by 4 different authors. If I was going to read these in the order which I liked them, I would start with the last story, and read from back to front.
The first two stories were not for me, but the last one was really interesting and the next to last was pretty good.
I may read the follow up books to the last two.

Great Trilogy with a little something extra.

I enjoyed reading each of thesee stories. They held my interest from the first page to the laast. Each story stands on it's own merit. The characters are people you've met. At the drug store, in the deli, on a train, they are familiar people. I recommend this anthology to anyone who wants to sample the work of these authors and immediately get hooked!

All good two very good

Sorry I did not write down the titles to all four books. I liked books three and four best.I liked the writing style and vocabulary of book three. Book four captured me. The end was both tragic and hopeful. Beautiful story.

Entertaining

Liked all of the books here. The sourdough one was my least favorite. The last one was tragically sad. I wanted some justice, revenge or something to happen to those vicious girls.

Great book. Very insightful.

The three mysteries were all different. Very entertaining writing. But what I enjoyed the most was the bonus at the end. Excellent history as seen through the eyes of each family member. Masterful writing. As though I were there!

so much more than expected

I enjoyed the first few stories. But I love the Patty Friedman book For some reason I can’t explain it resonated with me, moved me. Quoted unexpectedly. I’m not certain what it was. The story telling was superb. I want more.

I really like the characters...I felt a connection with them. I found myself getting distracted by wanting to finish their sentences for them. It is a good read.

A mixed review

The first story and the one by Patty Friedman, about her family, were good. 3 stars for both. I was disappointed by the one by Julie Smith. I have read several of her stories and liked them , but this one was a little to frivolous. 2 stars. The last one was so convoluted, I found it boring. 1 star.

The mysteries in this group of books were great reads. The final one, "Too Jewish" was very thought provoking. No one should have to put up with a mother like Letty's.

The last book isn't a mystery! First three books really fun, I didn't finish last one.
