one of my favorite books about writing--a strong mix of stories (the usual stories for the most part) and smart advice and consolations. John Gardner's book on writing is still the best, I think, but I'd include this one alongside John Dufresne's "The Lie That Tells A Truth" and "Rules of Thumb" (edited by Martone and Neville) as nearly essential.
Probably the best book on writing fiction that I’ve read thus far (2000). I sucked down or annotated every page.
Great sections with just the right and right amount of published examples. Chapter Nine, "Writing without a Workshop," may be the most valuable for the writer who is just out there somewhere alone. You can do it!
