A much healthier three stars compared to the first book in the Clare Point series, Eternal. We're back in the world of that little vampire village in Delaware, and I'll still give 4.5 stars to the author's radically innovative concept, which took me three paragraphs and a quote to summarize in that review, so I'll just link you to it--https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... --and add to it here.

We learn, for example, that when the curse was laid by God on the Irish septs (not clans) who rejected Christianity with violence, those who were married at the time stay married forever and those who weren't must remain single forever...forever or until God lifts the curse, which he hasn't for most of two millennia.

If there's an underlying theme to this sequel, it's that relationships with humans don't work (Fia with Glen, Arlan with Macy) and much of this story is all about why that's so. But by the ground rules, if the Clare Point vampires Arlan and Fia pair off they can never marry because they were single in the beginning. There's drama, strong feelings, and plenty of sex, but don't expect a typical paranormal romance novel!

As we saw in the first book, the vampires age like ordinary humans but are reborn immediately as clueless teenagers, over the next few years gradually getting their memories and gifts back, and the wise-woman of the Kahill sept (not clan), Kaleigh, is still in that process--she has an important role in this book too.

The main focus here is on Arlan Kahill, whose gift is the ability to shift at will in and out of the form of any animal of the canid and felid families, a gift he puts to very good use. His distant cousin Fia Kahill, the main character of the first book, is still a special agent of the FBI working out of the Philadelphia office and takes the lead in a number of scenes.

Nearly half of this book, though, is written from the point of view of Macy, age 29, fully human, with no friends or family and casual sex instead of lovers, who also goes by Maggie, Mary, and Marceline--that last is her birth name.

In her first scene Macy remembers the funerals of her parents and two little sisters, and we find out she's being stalked over the Internet by a serial killer who's not only obsessed with her but sends her detailed information about each of his kills. For fourteen years her life has been dominated by trying to get away from "Teddy" but he has tracked her down no matter how often she moves or changes her identity or internet address.
There was this crazy, weird connection between them. Had been for as long as she could remember. And she couldn't escape it. It was like cancer, a cavernous, black hole eating her from the inside out.
When she saw the events of the first book on TV, Macy felt a connection to Special Agent Fia Kahill and began calling her, once a month or so; twice now, she has given Fia advance warning of Teddy's kills. Finally Macy and Fia arrange to meet, and Fia has to have Arlan stand in for her. The drama begins.

It's easy to sympathize with a character like Macy who's suffered so badly, and I can accept that she's drawn as if magnetically to the Clare Point crew, not just Fia and Arlan but the village itself and the people she meets there. And she remains independent in all her dealings with them. Still, the enormity of the distortion in her life and her psychology takes me out of my own comfort zone even while it keeps me glued to the pages.

Arlan's character is much more balanced, although he leads a double life as a handyman around Clare Point and an enforcer who carries out executions decreed by the twelve-member High Council of the Sept (not Clan) in their mission to rid the world of evil and thereby eventually gain redemption from the Curse.

Arlan's unrequited love for Fia over the past thousand years clashes with feelings he develops for Macy, who unusually for her keeps coming back to him for sex. And Fia continues to be a mess: addicted to human blood, which she gets secretly in Philadelphia against the Claire Point Sept's strict prohibition.

By the way, readers who prefer to skip sex scenes should know that perhaps half of them in this story are important for plot or character development--skim, don't skip!

Fia's troublesome brother Regan seems to function in the story to create the emergency that puts Arlan with Macy and another emergency that takes them all to New Orleans, where they meet old enemies who are otherwise extraneous to the plot. Regan's issues take up quite a few pages, and I would edit him out entirely. Have Fia's boss call her back to Philly, leaving Arlan to meet Macy; cut the whole New Orleans trip and let the characters pursue their arcs in the Middle Atlantic states where they belong!

Although much of the plot is predictable enough to reduce the element of suspense, there's an odd twist near the end that comes out of nowhere and sets up the climax--it should have been foreshadowed (it could still be a surprise but not a "huh?" moment).

Even so, this is an engrossing story.

IMHO this was much better than the first book Eternal. I really liked vampire Arlan Kahill, executioner of the bad guys but a soft-hearted fool for Fia and, of course, Macy. Macy is the lone survivor of a serial killer who has been stalking her for 14 years. Fia and Arlan are alternately protecting her and searching for this whack job.

Very well written with spectacular characters and killer (pun intended) suspense. Not sure about a book three but here's hoping.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

V.K Forrest continues the tale of the Kahill vampires, a Celtic sect of immortals cursed by God to be reborn lifetime after lifetime until they get it right.

In book #1, we meet Arlan. Arlan is a Kahill vampire with the unique ability to shapeshift. He's also been in love with Fia Kahill, the heroine of Eternal, for centuries.

When a serial killer continues his rampage across the U.S, Fia finds herself investigating the murders and enlisting Arlan's help. As members of the sect's Council, Fia and Arlan have a responsibility to keep the humans safe from monsters like this Buried Alive Killer, and so they are just as invested (if not more so) than the human authorities.

Fia is also receiving help from an anonymous caller who has ties to the serial killer. Macy finds herself caught up in the disturbing life and activities of the psycho, and after seeing Fia on TV during the Clare Point murders the year before (the storyline of Eternal, book #1) she immediately feels a connection to her and knows that she can help.

During the course of the mystery Arlan and Macy meet and sparks fly. Arlan knows that he's not supposed to be with a human female, but he can't deny the attraction he feels for Macy and Macy is a progressive woman - she knows what she wants and she's not afraid to ask for it.

The action packed storyline of Undying was even better than Eternal. A nail-biting, gasp inducing thrill ride. It was dark, disturbing, and beautifully written.

One thing I will say for V.K's books... they don't follow rules and they don't have expected happy endings. If you're looking for a series with 'guy meets girl, couple falls in love, everyone lives happily ever after' then these might not be right for you. :)

LITERAL ADDICTION gives Undying 4 1/2 Skulls. I absolutely love this series - it's the best mesh of each of my favorite sub-genres and nothing like anything I've read before.

Thirsty

The second book in the Clare Point Vampire series. The story pace was slower than drying paint. The characters: Macy and Fiancé weren’t likable. The best thing is that the author didn’t introduce too many new characters. Instead the focus was on Macy, a promiscuous drifter who travels from town to town alienating herself and avoiding any attachment with others. Macy has the attention of a serial killer known as the Buried Alive Killer who murders whole families. In fact, Macy is the lone survivor. He communicates with Macy via instant messages over the internet. Recognizing that she senses the killings will continue unless he is stopped Macy becomes a cautious informant who contacts Fia, an FBI Agent.

Fia is set up to finally meet Macy but she can’t make the meeting due to a family emergency. So Arlan is sent instead. Macy solicits a sexual encounter with Arlan. The sex scenes are definitely not the focus for this writer, a paragraph long. Yet Arlan (a shapeshifting Vampire) is revered as a great lover (SMH / eye roll). Macy is drawn to Clare Point where she continues to have a sexual relationship with Arlan after she refutes claims that she is a stalker.

One night Arlan receives a telepathic distress contact from Regan (Fia’s brother / a member of the vampire clan killing team). If he could communicate that he is in trouble then he could have communicated his location. The whole chapter wasn’t necessary. Oh but it did provoke more eye rolling than a little a bit with Macy following vampires with them being unaware.

The whole story was off for me. I definitely am not recommending it. Unfortunately, I bought the series as one purchase. Hopefully, the remaining books in the series will be better reads.

Very good book! I’m quite surprised because I remember reading the first of the series last year, and I hadn’t been that impressed with the story. I’d found it kind of dull, and I just hadn’t been able to get on the Clare Point’s train. I then started the second book not expecting much of it, but as I’d bought the first three books, I wanted to at least try and read this book.

I’m beyond happy I did! This book and it’s breathtaking plot has everything I want in a novel. Let me throw in some key words : an investigation, vampires, a woman persecuted by a serial killers for years! Let’s just say this book offers us our fair share of twists and turns. Even though I still think Clare Point, its inhabitants, and its customs are pretty plain, I stated to really like some characters like Arlan, Eva and Kaleigh and I didn’t get bored at any point reading this book.

So now, I really want to know what happens in book 3, hope it’s as good as book 2! 😉

Arlan liebte Fia Kahill.

Say what?

I did not read the first book in the series so I was a little behind on some things. The back of this book indicates Arlan a vampire is asked to help protect a girl that his fellow vampire Fia is trying to get information from. Macy is connected to the "Buried Alive Killer" and Fia wants to know what she knows. The back then indicates that Arlan has a strong reaction to seeing Macy and that they two of them will be the main characters throughout this book. While that was somewhat the case it wasn't the whole truth. Arlan is in love with Fia, he has been for over a 100 years, but Fia has a human boyfriend and says that she doesn't love Arlan that way.

When Macy comes into the picture there is a strong attraction between the two. But Macy doesn't get close to people because of what's buried in her past. She has been running from the Buried Alive Killer for 15 years and has learned to not make connections to people. She starts to care about Arlan though and she doesn't know what to do about that.

Fia was in this book a great deal because she was helping to solve the Buried Alive Killing I did not like her at all. I found her rude and abrasive. She pushed Macy all the time to reveal things that she was not ready to. Macy knew she had to eventually discuss her entire relationship with the killer but Fia was never satisfied with what she got. Having not read the first book I was constantly thinking in my head "Thankgoodness Arlan isn't with her, Macy is way better even if she is emotionally damaged". She didn't seem to care at all that she was drifting away from Glen, and I felt she jerked Arlan around. She said she didn't want a relationship with him but she is who she would visit or call for help.

The ending was very abrupt and while it closed everything up it did not leave a satisfying ending between the characters. It was if all the action ended so the book ended too. This book was just very different than I had anticipated, while I'm sure others will love it it just wasn't for me.

Second book is the series - way better than the first! This time Fia is tracking another serial killer, The Buried Alive Killer. She's been in contact with a human, Macy, who the killer has been contacting for the past 15 years. Fia enlists the help of her old friend from Clare Point, the sexy Arlan, who happens to fall (just a little) for Macy. This complicates things because not only is Fia a tad bit jealous, she is also having problems with her human boyfriend, Glen (the FBI agent from the first book). Macy follows Arlan back to Clare Point where a booty-call/pseudo relationship forms between them. Macy is constantly in contact with "Teddy aka The Buried Alive Killer," and Fia is no closer to catching him. However, no one realizes the sick connection that Teddy has with Macy nor his designs on making her his. The final standoff between Macy, Teddy, Fia and Arlan is explosive and reveals a paranormal twist that even surprised me. I totally loved this book. It was exciting, well written and a great follow-up to book one. The difference with these books is that the paranormal side is the back story. These vamps in Clare Point aren't the type that go bump in the night. They deal out rough justice to those (human and non-human) who have become a menace to society - kind of like vamp vigilantes. I have to say Fia won me over in this book now that she's come to her senses (hint, hint). And Arlan??? Oh man, he's a dangerously sexy vampire with a heart of gold. Oh well...off to book three (Immortal).

Arlan liebt Fia.

Arlan one of the Kahill clan warriors, he hunt the despicable in the human race, the ones that don't fit in society the ones that damage and kill them. Macy a special human with undecided powers they met when one of this unfit for society is stalking her and as a favor to fee, his vampire on and off lover.
Arlam and Macy had a one night stand that doesn't count as a one night anymore since they have a chemistry between them.
Fia is having issues with Glen(Eternal) and she's not even close to closed the "buried them alive" killer and her involvement with the clan at Clare point.
Arlan and Macy have something really lovely and I though that they could keep it since she knows that something is not ok with Arlan and she doesn't mind.
Didn't like the ending I think that Fia and Glen should had the true in the open and Arlan could had stay with Macy.
Fia couldn't wait for the bed to cool off before to got in it.
besides that the plot the info was everything I expected from V.K books.

Interesting book, but it has a few weaknesses in character development. I didn't read the first book in the series, and while the author worked in the basics well, some of the connections and chemistry weren't clicking. The series has potential, and I'll read future books by this author, but I won't hold my breath waiting for the next release.

This was alright. But the ending, seriously.. WTH was that??? I mean come on.. What about Macy? I just didn't like the end. In fact it makes me want to drop it down a notch. so yeah 2.5 maybe... What a disappointment. Nope don't think I want to continue with this series if they are all going to have endings like that.

I have to admit I was seriously disappointed in this book. I think it had a lot of potential but the story moved so slowly that I never felt invested in the characters. I'd give a more in depth review but frankly I just didn't care enough the book to bother...

This book destroy the previous book; If you're only looking for the 'mystery' aspect you can read it, but if you want romance stay away from this book. This is not romance, this is a farce. I WANT romance and that's why I'll never read this author again, is wasted time -.-

McKenna-esque thriller with a paranormal bent.

It's been a long time since I read Eternal and then skipped to Ravenous, that I'd forgotten this twisty-turny world. I like the unexpected ending; it's a completely different beast...pardon the pun.

It's listing as paranormal romance is a little misleading. It's more of a mystery, really. Overall, I enjoyed it, but the ending was like falling off a cliff. It was good up until the last page.
