"This is a boy whose name is Mike. This is Mike’s pride and joy—his bike…" So begins the inspiring tale of a boy, his best friend, and the adventurous relationship that many children begin when they are young and continue the rest their lives! Illustrated in a retro-contemporary style, Mike and The Bike rhymes its way through Mike's choosing of his favorite toy - his bike (of course!) - and follows him off on adventures around the world and back home, where he goes to bed wearing his helmet, ready for the next day! Mike and The Bike is the first children’s book written by Grammy Award–winning guitarist and songwriter, avid cyclist and riding partner of Lance Armstrong, Michael Ward. Mike and the Bike came into being, appropriately enough, while Michael cycled near his home in Los Angeles. Includes a foreword by 6-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and a 30-minute CD with music by Michael and his son, Tennessee Ward, plus a special musical narration of Mike and the Bike by the "Voice of Cycling," Phil Liggett.

Both kids loved this story. We didn’t test out the CD, but we did enjoy the rhymes and fun story. Both kids are loving bikes so this was a great story for that stage.
This book was ok. Not one of my favorites. This is a story of Mike and his adventures on a bicycle written with a poetry format. It is a fun read. There are a lot of examples of simple rhyming words, which is great for the younger students. For older students writing poetry, this would be a example of poetry writing with the topic as a toy or personal item with a strong attachment to. My next thought of the book is sad but true. This book shows a kid getting a lot of enjoyment being outside with his bike and getting exercise. The poem puts a real fun tone to riding a bike and being active outside, and the truth is students these days need a little propaganda to be active. So that is another applicable use for this book. Would I buy this book for a classroom? No, would I use this book in the classroom, yeah I would as a prompt for poetry writing.
