FEAST!  A truly unique cookbook that combines tantalizing recipes with a fascinating glimpse into Native culture and customs.  The dishes are arranged into four sections:

-FOOD FROM THE WATERS (fish and seafood)

-FOODS FROM THE EARTH (berries, vegetables, and breads)

-FOODS FROM THE LAND (wild meats)

-FOODS FROM THE SKIES (fowl)

These categories illustrate two traditional Native attitudes:  respect for the nurturing land, and acknowledgment of the spiritual power food can have in our lives.

Seasonal menus feature such tastebud-tempting dishes as:

Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Fiddlehead Stir-Fry

Baked Sweet Potato with Roasted Hazelnuts

Stuffed Wild Goose with Apples

Wild Blueberry Cookies

These easy-to-follow recipes use ingredients--or close substitutes--that are readily available to today's busy cooks.

Just in time for National Aboriginal Day - Feast is a charming collection of recipes from indigenous populations on the Canadian west coast, using ingredients as close to the source as possible, and occasionally using classical French techniques (Pacific salmon poached in court bouillon any one?) While the recipes aren't difficult or ground breaking, what is truly valuable about the text are the reminders to stay seasonal, close to the earth and not to mess with a good thing.

The philosophy on home and sharing food "A time and place where values supersede possessions, where fulfillment is measured more by what is done than by what is owned, where life is good because Mother Earth is generous and the Great Spirit is a wise teacher," is one well worth considering.
